@@ChinnuWoW No. Don't want to go back to the era of class stacking, and feeling more forced to play specific things. (Raid) Versus now I can more freely play what I want and focus on it, because raid buff. If I want to play WW, I can find a guild easily to play with, because there will always be a guild needing monk buffs, or enh shaman, etc. Ele sham does get kinda shafted by this though.

There are some things in the game for example that Blizzard wants in the game, but doesn’t want to do themselves. Take the roleplaying addons, for example. They create viewable profiles, tooltips, and links about that specific character. But I do sit on the side of minimizing the need for addons, for the record. You shouldn’t have to have an addon to remove all the garbage icons from the map, for example. DBM should be built in, abilities more televised and apparent, etc.

Addons are an intrinsic part of MMO culture, you will never get rid of them all you can do is embrace them and make sure those using them have the best experience. If you feel pressured to use them then you need to grow up and learn to tell others no.

@@Vhaal97 I think you may have misunderstood my post. I have no issue with USING addons. I use quite a few of them. I have an issue with Blizzard developing the game around those addons. My opinion is that the game should be 100% developed with zero consideration of the addons players may or may not be using.

Blizz could totally fix the AddOn issue if they'd stop using "Instant" boss mechanics and actually design telegraphs. Like, if a boss is going to cast an important ability, relying on the cast bar is NOT enough to tip the player. There needs to be a slightly transparent effect on the ground that "fills up" as the boss is casting, AND give the effect a travel-time instead of effecting the entire area all at once. If the boss is casting ANYTHING with a large area, there should be a travel time from the starting position to the ending position. They need to implement this transparent "fill up" effect into ALL encounter casts and make it visually universal, so no matter what encounter you're doing, players ALL know "I need to move out of this thing" because the indicator effect is always the same. Sure, add unique visuals, but the underlying "thing to watch out for" needs to be the same. They also need to STOP using "Well you messed up once so basically fail" mechanics. Bosses should give players multiple opportunities to fail or succeed, and with each subsequent failure, make the consequences get worse. Like if a boss spawns some nasty adds cause you failed to do something, the first wave should be mild, and the boss will attempt to spawn more FASTER than the first time so it is fresh in your mind. If you fail again, the adds get even nastier, and the boss will attempt to do it again EVEN FASTER. So basically "3 strikes and you're out." and each failed boss mechanic speeds-up the next mechanic until either you succeed or lose the encounter. BLIZZARD STOP CATERING END GAME TO HARD CORE PLAYERS, THEY ARE NOT THE ONES WHO PAY YOUR BILLS!

They would probably ruin their games to TRY and stick it to FFXIV, all because they KNOW that game is much more player friendly, and has more fun stuff to do other then just end game crap. Especially when end game grinds are many times the same WQ again and again. Oh what fun that is 🙄.

@nothanksnopenoname6403 You might be right. I'm personally rather neutral on blizzards future considering Microsoft is in charge. They could be worse than the old Activision overlords or better. Only time will tell I guess. I am cautiously optimistic that the promise of making more money will motivate better behavior but I fully expect to be wrong.

great questions, great interview! Looking forward to seeing how delves work out for solo players. Off the cuff, keystone 15 level gear/rewards at the top end of delves feels pretty awesome! I enjoy heroic raiding and playing m+ around the 2800-2900 level, but also love a fun solo challenge for alts and to just have some fun. :)

I think it could be cool if the high difficulty delves gave mythic tier *appearances*. Don't know exactly how I'd want it to work, but it might provide some Mage Tower-esque incentive. I personally don't raid, because my PC can't really pull the latest raids at consistent frame rates, so I've been doing a lot more M+ and I've loved how I can collect the mythic appearances for alts, which made me play them more. I think delves could be an even better outlet for this with a seemingly more linear progression and lower barrier for entry.

I remember struggling to heal 14-15-16 level keys in pugs, everyone getting hit by everything, nothing being interrupted ect. I got really frustrated with how stressful pug healing was even in mid level keys. I was afraid to get into 20's and 20+ because I was afraid of ruining someone's key. Once I joined a few keys with really good players who dodged and interrupted, I found it was suddenly really easy to heal. In some 21's-22's+ I hardly had to heal at all. I find this is kind of crappy as a healer. Some keys without the right players are extremely stressful.

That is the phenomenon of "The wave". Mediocre players that get by until a certain level or get gear/rating as the 5th wheel on the wagon but once you get into group with multiple of them that are farming the lower end of BIS gear (+16) and have no real ambition beyond that it can get dire.

honestly, When I want WoW to be a "hard" game, I pug the high keys as a healer, shit always goes south and you get some adrenaline releasing trying to figure out all the shit that is happening, click more buttons than last time thats for sure lol But I can't do it for more than 3 keys in a row, a man needs a break lol

This is why I kind of agree with the idea of one shot mechanics for m+, because player responsibility will almost always be pushed off to the healer. I almost think that 'healers' would be better off as a support role for m+ with interrupts/dispels etc being their focus. The ability to reduce/cancel/avoid damage should be their main focus instead of covering for bad play.

I still love raiding but getting CE every season is a pain in the ass when most of guilds disband before the end of the progress due to the time it takes for the people in charge to manage 20 people and keep them motivated until the end. Playing with a group of 10 friends would be awesome. Many of my friends would come back if mythic raiding 10 was a thing.

Many people? Having them gone took the fun away. We are left with the same boring affixes over and over with nothing new. As someone who pugged 0.1% m+ with seasonal affixes I can tell you that it’s fun for good players and for casuals? They really only need to do low level dungeons for vault, so having it back doesn’t affect anyone in a negative way.

Really enjoyed this one hitting some good questions! But it's funny of mentioning DBM and saying that it makes it easy for players and so they have to make it harder and harder when you could just ban the mod so your content doesn't have to be so hard to cater to a add on and with the not bringing shamans example get rid of meters to some kind of extent. Just a thought. But again one of the best dev interviews I've seen so far.

Easy solution: make it a choice between M+ and Delve for the vault reward, where you would get the highest item level reward out of the two if you push both. Basically, players who push both Delve _and_ M+ would get reward for whichever they pushed the furthest. Players who focus on only one would get reward for that one. It guarantees that you don't have to do both if you only like one, just because of the extra reward from the other. If they go that route, the only aspect they should care about for the item level of the reward should be difficulty.

to combat the whole one hit scenarios, i think it a bit two fold, lower the amount of def cds/tankiness of the specs, that way you aren't in scenarios where you have to "bait" def cds, and in turn you can make the mechanics be less one shot mechanics, as i think the classes having so many def cds is the leaning cause of why there are so many mechanics that do as much damage as they do is because of how much survivability classes have.

@@Adirtan no, but they can severely limit what they can do. In the end they are the ones who decide what information is being sent through API's. So, they don't care enough about the problems addons cause. At this point they're probably "afraid" what would happen if they limited addons more.

@@jansteyaert1They know if they limit them or remove them without adding that same thing IN GAME, players will leave for better MMO’s and cause a huge fuss over it. That would effectively end high end raids and keys if they mess with addons, and RP addons also are necessary to keep that group of players to. Unless they add that stuff in game and it’s as good as addon or better, they need to just accept addons.

​@johnbowman3630 I can say that FFXIV has a healthy high end content scene while having addons specifically banned. But that's because addons were banned from launch, with encounters designed with mechanic ease of understanding in mind.

Good questions and overall nice interaction with devs. I am however a little concerned at the corporate speak "we're aware of it" answers to a lot of the fundamental game design questions about raids and M+. Sounds like noone has any actionable things ready to go anytime soon. Which is sad. I'd rather they have something going on than just "thinking about it" as they're saying here.

Nno blizzard. Never design around people having addons. Addon developers and weakaura developers are way starter then you. Design for people having timers. Thats it. And make abilities not work after timers. Make them rng. And Telegraph it good. We only have WAs And addons for things we cant do without or if it make the success chance better. All you do by making stuff harder And harder And harder is that you segment your playerbase even more

cant get an answer anywhere, but if anyone knows, are they planning on including older content dungeons in the follower dungeon system? like old content dungeons, shadowfang keep, stockades, whatever. does anyone know? it would be awesome for leveling p.s , the raid-buff issue is super easy to solve. just stop with them. delete them. No more raid buffs. that way, you can choose whatever classes you want.

Or you just choose 3 rogues and 12 mages, because those classes do the most damage. That's what people have done, and it's what people do in classic. The question is why does enhancement have this buff when ele and resto don't? I can even tell you that, because why would you bring an enhancement shaman (melee) when you can bring a resto or ele (ranged). It's a problem Blizzard needs to solve, but it's not as easy as removing raids buffs. You might think your casual 1 day a week raiding guild won't fall into the trap, but when you're recruiting for to fill that last spot, will you pick the highest dps class or someone who will make the raid harder by doing less damage.

Did they forget about visions of N'zoth? I would have enjoyed Torghast much more if it gave a piece of gear each time I ran it. Or at least once per zone per day. They need to make delves drop +10 gear at least then a +15 from vault at maximum difficulty.

The things I want as a. Ex mythic raider who no longer has the time to do raiding content. 1) queue system like hc and normal dungeons for m+. Let's say a 15 gives max gear in vault, let's make and auto queue system until 10+ or something and put ilvl restrictions on it. The majority of the little free time is me queueing and getting declines as the class is not meta? I'm willing to take a risk of queueing ith random people for some lower keys....2) option to craft tier pieces from the beginning. Nothing more frustrating then not raiding and being unlucky with the vault and on’t getting your full tier near the end of a patch

Healing is just frustratingly dull in m+. I play healer to heal and in some comps there is so much self healing. That or it seems healer gets dumped with all the affix jobs. I play to have fun healing not to have to dps. Also its time they stopped wasting resources on mythic raiding for something that has such low engagement. I cant even remember the last world first race i was interested in. Scrapping alert and aura type addons would also be interesting. They also need to sort out game massivelt for new players. Ive helped a few lately but all tine its the same reason they stop. Too much crap and no guidance on the various activities etc.

In terms of the structure of the healing gameplay loop, I think that a large shift away from avoidable damage would be the best direction for the game. It strikes me as odd from a design philosophy perspective that a game which has a dedicated role for increasing group survivability largely offloads that responsibility to other non-healer players. The main reason a group dies or lives should ultimately come down to how well your healers play their class. Currently its more of a 50/50 split where a lot of the time its because a kick/stop was missed, or someone mispositioned, or a personal wasn't used. Reducing the amount of dodging and stops needed while increasing the passive damage intake of the party would do wonders for increasing the agency of healers in regard to your group surviving. I want to see more situations where a wipe happens and the response to the question "Why did we die there?" is "The healer misplayed" instead of "We missed a kick" or "We didn't spread enough" or "A soak didn't happen". That's not to say those mechanics have to go completely, i just want to see them be contextual to the role that is performing them. If dps are expected to do a soak mechanic increase their damage output during a burn phase for succeeding it, for healers their healing output to match a tough healing check, for tanks their eHP right before a big tank buster.

It’s an eternal tug of war though in design because the more dependent you make players on each other the easier it is to have negative experiences at the hands of others. That may not sound inherently bad for those seeking a team game, but the reality is players want victory more than they want struggle, players don’t want to fail, and they don’t want to play with others who will make them fail. This is why we end up with multiple difficulties, personal defensives, “carry potential”, “gatekeeping”, isolated communities, and so on. It’s an endless battle. A never ending push and pull between wanting to give people a team experience but also wanting to give people greater capacity to not let others ruin their fun. Healers want more agency, while other people might be happy to not rely so much on a bad healer in their group. I agree that positive feedback for good performance can help encourage people. A role system does inherently demand a division of labor, but I can’t say a majority of players would be happy to see their agency over situations be taken away and placed more so on their healers. Perhaps the notion of problems having singular solutions should be moved away from. Let different roles offer specialized means of solving the same problem (ex. Kicking an attack vs redirecting it vs healing it’s damage) so players can feel impactful without ever fully relying on different roles

I sorta dont get the "weak auras is incredibly powerful its probably unlikely that you are going to see the entire weak auras system in wows UI". but its not like the addon has access to something you dont or anything...you could literally re-write weakauras as-is and bake it into the game, right? Im not saying it wouldnt take a large coordinated effort but its certainly doable, no? Or else why give an addon that much power? doesnt it sort of force that whole back and forth balance issue where you have to increase difficulty to account for WA but then the WAs get stronger?

I really...REALLY don't want Delves to just be a newish Torghast. I don't want random powers and massive buffs and just goofiness. My friends want, more than anything, a more dungeon diving or dungeon crawling experience instead of Dungeon Queue Linear Formula that WoW has. I'd love it if WoW would actually put in something more akin to older MMOs dungeon crawling.

Unpopular opinion perhaps, but I friggin' loved Torghast, especially when it was super hard early on. There were some truly awesome builds you could achieve in there, and most of the powers were very well thought out. The group tuning could have used extra difficulty levels, perhaps, as well as additional rewards. Solo was very well-tuned for most classes, but horrid for certain DPS specs, I'll grant you.

It's good end game is changing it's currently so boring, delves seems a more casual endgame which sounds like just what we need. Hopefully it's not just for the players that enjoy hard content but for everyone and the majority players that just like casual content.

is Michael's peak key a +5? cuz there is no way you spend the whole dungeon in cat form as they are extremely healing heavy

If people are really doing it right, specifically a resto druid can spend a lot of time as a cat up to +18-20 or so, because in S3 we got more spells that don't take us out of cat form. There's a huge spread +20 to +25 and up in terms of how much great and good stops/defensives/self sustain can manage damage.

@@luckyskaven13 she is specifically talking about one-shot mechanics in high end game, where in key above 27 it is a must that you are at 100% HP. you cannot keep the group at that HP if you are in cat form.

I do not want the seasonal affix back nor want a seasonal affix. Give us a new set of rotation affixes to deal with. Not just some stupid one affix above x level every week. Hate the seasonal affix because if it's terrible, we're stuck with it for 3+ months rather than 1 week of trash affixes.

Problem is, there will always be players who will say they will feel forced to do Delves to maximize gearing, and we all know they will scream from the rooftops until it's nerfed into oblivion. Either that or they will say they aren't challenging enough for the gear they reward and call for them to be made tougher to the point it will push the target audience, world players, out.

I think there are some ways to mitigate that by making the best delve gear mutually exclusive to get from M+ or Raid gear. World content being added to the vault is fantastic and achieves exactly that. You can't take both a M+ and Delve item from your vault. It's also important to consider that world content gear just doesn't need to be as good. It just needs to be good enough to encourage it's target audience to want to do that content.

Personally i would really like that they made more endgame content that is something else than raids/dungeons. They have the money and manpower to do that and still have people to do raids/dungeons for people who like those. What i would love is GW2 style world meta events that would happen in almost every continent like in GW2.

healing sucks in WoW because of one shot mechanics. What's the point of healers if they can't heal. Just there for ressing? Addons also suck. Design the game where we DON'T need addons. Go play FF14 for a week and come back and fix wow.

You're missing the point though, a party's survival should not hinge solely on the healer; if this were the case, everyone could play like complete dogs and still be carried by an epic healer. A healer should not be able to hard-carry braindead DPS who get hit by avoidable mechanics. Never fall for the bit where the DPS blame you (the healer) for taking entirely avoidable damage, get details, check the damage taken and deaths log, and call them out when necessary. - Long time healer

Great interview! Really great dev answers as well. They seem like they get it. On the topic of raid buffs; I think it's ideal if every CLASS (not spec) has one. When single specs start getting unique ones, it gets weird. But one of every class in a raid should be expected to be "perfectly optimal", then the rest of the slots should be free. I think that's perfectly reasonable.
