GLUTEN FREE TOKYO / EATING GLUTEN FREE FOOD IN JAPAN / CELIAC IN JAPAN / GLUTEN FREE RESTAURANTS IN TOKYO / CELIAC IN TOKYO / TOP 10 GLUTEN FREE RESTAURANTS IN TOKYO / TOKYO 2020
Hey everyone!!! When I was in Japan in January, I ate at 10 different GLUTEN FREE restaurants in Tokyo! A lot of these restaurants are also vegetarian and vegan, and accomodate a wide range of dietary requirements. Japan isn't known for it's Gluten Free food - a lot of celiacs struggle while they're travelling there because there tends to be wheat in a lot of Japanese food. The language barrier can make travelling with allergies particularly difficult, but if you know the right places to go, you'll be able to eat more than just plain tofu!

There is a form of non-reactive celiac disease. People who have celiac but don’t display the symptoms/ response (getting sick, having intestinal damage etc). Side note- celiac is not an allergy but an autoimmune disorder. Also- oats are naturally gluten free and CAN stay gluten free if they’re processed in a non-wheat environment. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!! YOU ARE THE BEST!!!

1 out of 5 Coeliacs react to oats as the avenin in oats has a similar protein structure, I know from personal experience. It is BAD to simply tell people oats are gluten free without mentioning this!

In Australia they mark all oats as non-gluten free, because a good proportion of celiacs react to them. I was surprised when I saw 'gluten free oats' in the US.

I'm pretty sure that people who have non-reactive celiac disease still have intestinal damage. That's the gold standard for diagnosis so if they didn't they wouldn't be able to be diagnosed. I think they just have no outward symptoms (nausea, bloating, vomiting, bathroom issues, headaches, etc). I'm wondering if Alex might be in this group of people now. She said she still eats mostly GF at home, and tries to avoid gluten. She might have too little damage to the villi to be picked up with the colonoscopy.
@onmydeathbed
@onmydeathbed 4 жыл бұрын
@@tikusblue Exactly! it's called silent celiac disease. It could display atypical not gastrointestinal-related symptoms or no symptom at all, but it will cause intestinal damage!. That's why the gold standard is indeed gastroscopy and biposy. My sister is now fully asymptomatic and has igA in the range, but still suffer from a very severe form of celiac disease. Alex said she was checked by biopsy, so there's no way she is celiac if biopsy and Gastroenteroscopy is negative, because damage to villi will happen always, either the person is asymptomatic or not. There is a latent form which doesn't show damage to villi, but she should in anycase have positive igA, so positive blood test to celiac disease. However, alex could be allergic to wheat. It is a very rare allergy, but can happen. It has same symptoms, but they appear usually quicker. She should do allergy blood test (igE) to evaluate it, since she already escluded celiac disease. another thing that could be is non-celiac gluten sensitivity, which can be assessed by some markers but it is still under research.

For fellow celiacs in the comments: In case you didn't know, Italy is one of the best countries when it comes to Gluten Free food! Big cities like Rome, Venice, Milan etc have tons of amazing GF restaurants and stores. South Italy is a bit less informed about it but as long as you're not visiting a small town you should be good! :) Also, if it says on the package that it's gluten free, then it's gluten free. I noticed during my trip to the US that there is a distinction between "gluten-free" and "gluten-friendly", but as far as I know "gluten-friendly" is not a thing, so you don't have to worry about that!

The problem with gluten free foods in the US is also that the laws for what can be labelled as gluten free is different to countries such as NZ and Australia. Oats in NZ and Australia are not allowed to be labelled as gluten free as 1 in 5 coeliacs react to them.
@AmyNiG

So some people can be entirely coeliac and cannot injest any gluten and some are just intolerant and can injest things that have crossed over, such as cooking in shared oil ☺️ or that’s what I was told when I worked in the food industry anyway 😅 that’s probably what they meant by “friendly”
@tomiwastaken4938

@@qienna6677 Yeah, that's why I said that Italy is one of the best places for it. It is taken very seriously here, to the point that labels on food packs are required to say if the food item in question was made in an establishment that makes gluten stuff, even when the food item in question itself does not contain gluten! And to answer to what you said, here in Italy oats are not considered Gluten-free unless the product explicitly says it is!

Finally a youtuber who values creating content with as many needed breaks and as much length as wanted. Your videos are always longer than others and that's what I love about them, a good way to spend my time fully focused on one type of content instead of being done in 10 mins. And we know damn well you would've surpassed 1M by now but you took the break for yourself and for the sake of what's happening around the world which most KZbinrs would never have the guts to do❤️ really appreciate you.

I thought I was lactose intolerant, but it turned out I had GERD and I also had to get my gallbladder removed. Luckily, I was able to go to an allergist to see if I was actually allergic to anything. I'm not allergic to food, but I'm allergic to just about every kind of pollen from trees in every season. And I'm oddly allergic to cockroaches as well as penicillin, dust mites, mold, certain grasses, fabric band-aids, medical tape, vitamin D supplements, and weeds. I'm also allergic to feathers which is what my pillows are made of. :( Allergies suck.

So, oats...they can be GF. In and of themselves, they ARE gluten free but they are often not labeled specifically GF. The reason for this is that oats and wheat products are often grown in the same fields or at least somewhat close in proximity. Therefore, for oats to be labeled GF they have to have been grown a certain distance from any crops containing gluten. I’m not clear on the specific distance. Long story short, they probably were oats that you were eating, but that’s not inherently a bad thing. 😀

Thank you Alex! I am also gluten intolerant, and I've been hoping you would at least speak of the gluten free options in Japan. Although the country where I'm from has made a massive leap in making more options for people with food restrictions available, I can't explain the joy of just walking in somewhere and not having to worry if I'll be able to eat or have to settle for french fries again (which are also not safe at some places). Some people usually think of pizza or pasta as a cheap and easy meal, and for me it has been the complete opposite. Eating pasta is aways reserved for celebrations. Due to the lack of availability or the price, even if making at home. Anyway.. long rant is long. Thank you for being so inclusive and raising awareness, as well as providing very helpful resources. Thank you for being such a bright minded human being!

Oh my gosh yes! My dad was diagnosed with celiac disease when I was born in 1996, and yeah he said there was like you said, LITERALLY NOTHING gluten free. He literally thought he was dying or had cancer because of how much weight he was losing, and they had no idea if was a thing where we were until they finally found out. I remember whenever we would go to restaurants when I was little, and he’d have to ask the waiters or waitresses to check to see if certain things on the menu had gluten in it, they’d literally be so confused and look at him like he was crazy lol so for prob a million times he’d explain what it was and sometimes we’d have to have the manager themselves come out with the ingredient packages of certain things to check the “fine print” on the ingredients list. A good amount of the time he got lucky and wouldn’t get sick, but yeah sometimes cross contamination would happen and he gets SOOOO SICK. He’s literally in the bathroom ALL DAY!!! So Alex, my dad totally feels your pain lol all of my siblings including me have been tested and thankfully we didn’t have it. Some of us can grow out of our allergies but yeah celiac disease is a lifelong thing and yeah people can develop any allergy anytime of life, but some people have different reactions. Some people have rashes like external reactions and some people like my dad has the internal reaction where he gets so sick and in the bathroom all day. But we’ve gotten very lucky with all of the vast selections of gluten free food nowadays! My dad still sometimes also has to check labels because you think some things may be gluten free when they’re really not like certain seasonings and what not... but you did an amazing job on this video! Loved it!!💕💕💕 Go Celiacs, Celiacs UNITE!!!

I had a similar experience with my dairy allergy. I couldn’t have any dairy at all or my throat would get closed. Then all of a sudden it just died down. Like as a kid I couldn’t have a drop of dairy and then when became a teen all of a sudden I could. It’s weird my allergies have fluctuated they go away and then come back. Like for my 18th birthday I was able to have fricken cheesecake for the first time and I only had an upset tummy. A month later I had ice cream and had to use my epipen and go to the hospital. Allergies really crazy!

For real, I used to get insane rashes and react badly to milk. Years later, I get an upset stomach when I eat dairy but, eventually, my body recovers. I still avoid dairy though tbh.

I was lactose intolerant for about 2 years before I got into puberty. During puberty I didn't have any reaction to dairy and as soon as I turned 18 the lactose intolerance came back and I can't drink milk anymore. It's so weird.

When I was a child I was deathly allergic to pineapples. But I have had them in my adulthood and have been fine. Also I became lactose intolerant when I was in high school. And now I am pregnant and no longer lactose intolerant. I think it really does have to do with the hormones that your body produces. Crazy.

My Mum was diagnosed as a coeliac as a child and then when she was about 7 years old, was told that she had grown out of it. Ate normal wheat containing food for years no problems. Fast forward about 30 years later she got really, really sick, had loads of tests in hospital etc and it turns out that she was intolerant to gluten again and is still a coeliac! A lot of our family who are mostly Irish are coeliac and we all display a mild intolerance to wheat even if we are not diagnosed as coeliac. Glad to hear it doesn’t affect you as much at the moment! 💕

I'm not allergic to gluten myself, but my little brother developed an allergy (not celiac) around 2 years ago and it was pretty hard for me at first because gluten hides in so many things!! Love that you're spreading awareness and just your videos in general ❤️ btw, I was wondering if the "barley" they had on their gluten-free menu is real barley or just chinese pearl barley (don't know how it's actually called, only know the nickname). Because it's called barley, looks like barley, tastes like barley but is NOT barley and completely gluten-free :)

Lol, I'm often very apprehensive about commenting on videos , but seeing this kind of content genuinely makes me so happy. I was diagnosed when I was 15 and visited Japan when I was 17 in 2016 with my Japanese class. I survived for sure but a lot was at my own risk sort of thing and I survived off of tuna onigiri and these weird potato sticks from 7/11. Luckily, my home stay mother managed to find one gf grocery shop somewhere randomly in the middle of Fujidera in Osaka so I was able to try some of that thick Japanese bread and I won't lie, it was better than any gf bread I've found in NZ to this day. I've always been so apprehensive to go back since travelling causes a lot of anxiety around what I'll be able to find to eat but your video really has made me excited about the possibilities that exist in Japan! Keep making such amazing and informative content, I love it!

I feel this SO much!! I found out I had celiac when I was 10. In 1998- there was NOTHING gluten free. My doctors had never even heard of it and I had to drive 2 hours just to see a specialist who didn't tell me my stomach problems were my own fault! Its so nice to have so many foods to choose from now because 20 years ago?? No thanks to ANYTHING with a GF label. Lol

I can definitely attest to this. I react to bread, pasta etc. in Australia but have tested negative to coeliac. On my two week holiday in Japan I could eat whatever I wanted without any consequences. It's what prompted me to look into preservatives as a possible cause. Crazy how things work!

@@KaylaLConn that's interesting maybe it's how each nation makes their food traditionally. I also heard most lactose intolerants can drink Japanese and Chinese milk because of the way they make it, because Asia got the idea of making milk late so most citizens are naturally intolerant so they make it a different way to western nations to accommodate this.
