I just want to point out the real reason they are filing for bankruptcy is NOT because of the endless shrimp deal. Red Lobster restaurants was bought out by a private equity firm. This firm then sold all of the real estate which made them back most of what they spent buying red lobster, then through an unfavorable lease it was given back to red lobster at a ridiculous rate and this is why they’re filling for bankruptcy

For anyone wondering, no, Endless Shrimp isn't the real reason Red Lobster is shutting down. The real reason is the same thing tthat destroys everything you love, private equity. Also the endless shrimp is more a way for Thai Union to sell the surplus shrimp they have and keep their prices high by limiting supply and creating artificial scarcity.

Overall, Red lobster lost 11 million in the endless shrimp deal, but the real reason that red lobster is shutting down isn’t because of this: red lobster’s bankruptcy was because Golden Gate Capital would have to pay 2.1 billion to buy red lobster. They bought it, but then sold a lot of red lobster’s real estate to a company called American Capital Reality properties to recoup the losses. ACRP then leased the buildings to red lobster at a high price. These “unfavorable” leases are a major reason that they went 300 million dollars in debt, not the 11 million in shrimp. I’m not a lawyer and I’m not involved with red lobsters, so I can’t say this information is 100% accurate, but that was the common consensus I found when researching online. Hope this helps.

Loved the video! Fyi, the real reason for Red Lobster's bankruptcy is likely that they were bought out by private equity. TLDR: PE buys companies to run into the ground and make money short-term, without having financial responsibility if they fail. Private equity gathers money from private sources to buy companies, then make the company private. Legally they're managers, not owners so they don't have financial/legal responsibility for the purchased company. They typically cut staff/wages, product quality, etc for short-term gains. They put in little money while the company accrues debt, and charge management fees towards the company. They sell the company's real estate, and the purchaser leases it back to the company. This reduces the company's capital while PE makes money from selling the real estate. They don't care if the company survives; actually they often declare bankruptcy on purpose to avoid paying long-term salaries/pension plans. If the promotion was an actual issue (it lost them less than half a percent of their total revenue for the year) they could: - Stop the promotion - Increase promotion price

Red Lobster been on the decline since thai union took over. Red lobster buys their shrimp from thai union at about three-four bucks a pound. Youd have to eat 8 pounds of shrimp to lose a profit on it not including labor... but the prep on everything on endless shrimp is at most putting it in a dish and adding sauce. When Darden sold them in 2014 to Golden Gate Capital it sold the rights to the land and leased it on a 10 year lease and immediately made money off their investment... guess what just started, fiscal year 2025 for Red Lobster with no more lease agreements. All the Red Lobsters that were not profitable closed last Monday. They closed 100 restaurants.

Maybe they have that on their internet timeline, but endless shrimp was around in the 80's too, they just didn't call it "endless shrimp" back them. My dad use to take me there every month for all you can eat shrimp when I was a kid. There was a huge slanted wall covered in crushed ice and shrimp spread around the ice and replaced as people ate them. It was glorious. Nothing like you see today. It's actually one of the greatest memories I have of my father, Red Lobster all you can eat shrimp nights. Man we use to laugh so hard at random stuff.

Just to clarify, Red Lobster was in financial trouble and the endless shrimp deal didn't help but it wasn't the reason for their bankruptcy. They were bought out by a private equity firm named Golden Gate Capital and forced Red Lobster to sell all their real estate to them. Then Red Lobster was forced to pay leases back to Golden Gate. Golden Gate added more debt to an already struggling company. So Red Lobster was a victim of a corporate raid.

Shrimp has more tryptophan per gram than turkey. The last time I did endless shrimp it felt like I took Xanax the rest of the day. At our location, we'd eat as much as possible, save our initial sides (which we chose side salads) then got the pasta dish as the last item. "Oh gee, we're full, can we get a box?" Ate a redicuous pile of shrimp, and took home Alfredo pasta with shrimp, side salads, and a basket of biscuits to eat the next day.
