hey Tyler, the reason it's hotter when you breathe out is because your breath is warm! Capsaicin lowers the tongue's tolerance to warmth, so just warm things feel burning hot when they actually aren't. Air you breathe in isn't warm by default. Hope that explains it for you!
@monhi64 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say that exactly, it triggers certain receptors that are supposed to only respond to high heat. And triggering them independently than the heat. I know flavor in general is a lot stronger at higher temps, just how the chemistry works out, so I think that’s a good part of the added spice. Idk that’s probably overly semantic lol

So there's a couple of reasons why your vision could be feeling better and part of it is due to your reaction to the capsaicin. Capsaicin in high amounts (to the individual) actually stimulates adrenaline and your concentration heightens with the flood of endorphins. The reason why, is because your body feels under attack. Capsaicin is literally a poison. For the MOST part, not a deadly one, but it can cause fatal reactions in especially sensitive people. You could also just be feeling accomplished for owning such a challenge that you weren't too sure of. Those reward chemicals in the brain can give a placebo effect towards your ability to focus and concentrate.

I can’t speak for the jelly bean challenge, but I’ve eaten a full Carolina reaper before. It definitely doesn’t come in waves. The spice builds up over the course of a minute until it’s just this intolerable pain. It no longer feels spicy, it just hurts for about 10 minutes. Then for another ~10 min it feels like a really spicy jalapeño. After about 20-25 minutes the pain was gone. Heartburn that night was horrible and I shit my brains out the next morning.

1. Your vision is likely improving because of a slight teary-eyed effect from the spice. Sometimes a small teardrop will form a “lens” on the eye surface and act like a contact lens. That or it’s in your mind/the placebo effect. 2. It feels hot when you breathe out because your warm lungs have heated the ambient air and on the way out it’s warmer because temperature heat combined with spice heat makes the pain more intense. It’s why a warm hot wing is hotter than a room temperature one. On the way in, the ambient room air is cool, usually due to you sucking it in quickly and it has a cooling effect that disappears immediately upon exhaling, when it gets worse. I’m no scientist but those are my best guesses. This has been as fun as watching you eat pickles! More of Tyler Torture, please! Love from Canada!

Great video. Funny story of some of my own experience with spice. For many years I have not been able to taste anything spicy. If I ever told anyone, most wouldn't believe me and assume I was trying to be 'macho'. A few years ago, me and some guys were doing a bachelors party for a friend who was getting married. Was in the middle of a online game tournament when I was challenged. Someone had brought some carolina reaper peppers, and while all the other guys chickened out just by touching the tip of their tongue to it- I ate 3 whole. Went right back to the game, with no drink or nothing. I did however end up with a nosebleed about 5 minutes later and spent half the night on the toilet but lets ignore that. As far as tasting spice goes, I am immune though I still get all the after effects.

Am pretty sure when I tried those, they pretty much went in general order of expected hotness, although sometimes a slow-burnning-mild chilli can hit much harder than one that is meant to be hotter - depends on lots of things really. I've tried increasingly hotter things in the past, and I've generally found that the first level can feel really hot just because you're not used to it. When you go to eat the next one, quite often it's not as bad because you get that temporary tolerance. If not already tried, the every flavour beans should be next, lol

Tyler did a pro move with the ice-cream. Capsaicin is an oil, thus hydrophobic. When you drink water you are likely to spread the capsaicin around, making it worse. Ice-cream is full of fat which attaches to the capsaicin oils, giving more relief. Another pro tip is to take some pepto before trying an intense capsaincin challenge, it will coat the stomach, giving relief from nausea that may come. Keep in mind, the nausea caused by capsaicin is not a sign of weakness but rather biology, and cannot be overcome by "toughness". The capsaicin makes our stomach release somatostatin, a substance that mainly resides in the nervous system, and stomach. Somatostatin stimulates the pain receptors in the stomach, causing the nausea.

Your intake air is cool and stimulates your receptors while your exhausted air warms your receptors and spreads the spicy oils. Alcohol or acidic liquid will dissolve the spicy oil making it easier to wash away better than water. Baking soda is the number one thing to dissolve and carry away the oils, baking soda main use is for removing poison ivy oils. Kool aid or orange juice works the best from the sugar and vitamin C. Bread and peanut butter works for a tip on your next episode. I actually think hot peppers gave me 20/20 vision, I could always see better after a couple of minutes when I accidentally got habanero or reaper oil in my eyes. The doctor says I have perfect eye sight now.

As a “chilli head” myself, my best advise is to not drink or eat anything to try to stop the burn. It will only temporarily get rid of the heat, and then greatly intensify it after the relief is gone. Honestly you’re best off just letting it burn without anything to help. It will only last 5-10 minutes and then be completely gone. As for if you drink/eat something, it can last hours.

I’ve eaten Carolina reapers several times and love spicy food. Water spreads capsaicin, ice will increase the intensity and duration of the burn, likely due to making it harder and preventing it from dissipating. Acids and fats are what’s going to work best. Sour candies would likely be the best relief, because they contain malic acid. From personal experience, citrus and yogurt work fairly well. The malic acid in sour candy will be much more potent than the citric acid in a soda though. Make sure to wash your hands very well before using the restroom after touching a reaper. Don’t learn the hard way, like I did.

I think you had the siracha and the reaper switched . I use siracha on pizza and mix it 50 / 50 with ketchup for cocktail sauce . Siracha heat is only horse radish .

Try the Death Nut Challenge next! Bet QC missed this and the Sriracha and Reaper got mixed up.

Its hotter feeling when you breathe out cause the air you exhale is much warmer than the air you breathe in. Spicy foods make you more sensitive to hot air and liquids.

Chili makes you sense heat more intensely. Your warm breath is burning your mouth.

Hold your nose closed when eating spicy. They tested remedies on Food Theory and holding your nose worked the best, surprisingly good even.

Tyler should do stuff like the devils toe lollipop, worlds hottest gummy bear, one chip challenge etc

Tyler who hates most stuff with taste is so funny. For hot food, don't use water or milk - use half a teaspoon of sugar and dissolve it in your mouth - instant relief :)

Gelapino has the best the funniest pronunciation of halapenyo (jalapeño) ever.

Tyler, ice cream and milk are not good for cutting out the heat. While they do provide immediate relief, in the end they will prolong the reaction as they coat the capsaicins on the tongue. Something better would be an acidic juice like orange juice. It will make it more intense for a short time but they will break down the capsaicin more quickly, limiting the time you experience the effects.

To be frank, as a person who has eaten many spicy things, enjoys reaper hot sauce, and has consumed the Last Dab sauce from Hot Ones, the Jalapeño jelly beans has more heat than the Reaper ones. I have eaten both peppers and can confirm that doesn't match real life, lol.
