This is probably the best video I've seen of an athlete trying a vegan diet. Very honest and direct, not full of trash or "ehhh it's okay but it's not like real meat" after every bite. And also the best cooking from an athlete I've seen. Normally, gym rats struggle with boiling pasta. Great video, thanks for giving a vegan diet an honest chance. For what it's worth, I've been vegan for 10 years now. Before I started, j was barely 95lbs and I couldn't squat or bench the empty barbell. Now I'm over 200lbs fairly lean and just hit a 190kg squat PR. Being a vegan athelete is totally possible. I meet people everyday who are unhealthy and not vegan, but want to tell me that a vegan diet is bad lol. I like the summation at the end - many diets can be healthy or unhealthy.

I cook vegetarian or vegan most of the time, though I'm not strict about the latter, and I never touch any of the meat subs because when you look at the back they are almost always loaded with all kinds of chemicals like artifical sweeteners, thickeners, etc. But there is a plethora, not any less than for non-vegetarian, of vegetarian and vegan recipes that are just baller! Right now I'm kind of hooked on lentils and so I make a lentil bolognese which tastes amazing like once a week. Oh and homemade pizza is great: make the dough, slap some sauce, cheese and vegetables (I usually go for zucchini, bell peppers, mushrooms, onions and tomatoes) on top and you have a pizza that tastes better than any restaurant pizza and can be made without any extra fat than the fat in the ingredients itself. Just amazing.

@@kataklasm5621 I never touch actual meat/dairy because the contents of a slap of flesh aren't exactly very great either, natural or not. Most of the peristent organic pollutants (POPs) that people eat comes from fish/dairy for example. Animals are also injected full of hormones in order to help their growth. People worry so much about what exists in these replacements but they don't do a lot of research into the foods that are already part of their diet. I'm not saying that meat replacements are the healthiest thing you can eat, but what I am saying is that people overstate its problems and take for granted the issues with animal products.

I am vegan and right now my macros are around 2500-2800 calories with around 150g+ of protein every day - pretty similar to the kind of stuff you ate but instead of the falafel burger I usually do some kind of tofu dish for lunch. The calorie difference is mostly the peanut butter and ice cream, and the protein difference is mainly just I use a little more protein powder in my oats and tofu has more than falafel but I could see myself eating that exact day of eating. It's so much better than the junk food vegan diets or the calorie deficient vegan diets that people try and complain about - it's really just like any other way of eating - you still have to pay attention to what you eat if you want to feel good

I just cook the tofu until it's starting to brown and then put the tomatoes and chickpeas in it. I also like red beans and rice, with onion, bell pepper and celery and a lot of creole seasoning. No food is universally good and no food is universally bad as far as health is concerned. But people like you have this tunnel vision as if protein was the only nutrient that matters and as if most people aren't suffering from a massive excess of calories. Would eating a salad hurt people so much? If you know anything about nutrition, you'd know like Thrall does that it's perfectly fine to eat plant based, he did a whole day of eating reaching his goals. I've been vegan for over 7 years and you really came up with good suggestions. I also put flaxseed in my oatmeal but I use soy milk, which has almost the same protein content as cow's milk, without the bad stuff. For those who don't know, hummus is basically pureed garbanzo beans with some other spices and stuff added in. I spread it on sandwiches. For those who claim it's too expensive to eat vegan, two of my stapes are PBJ's and beans & tortillas - peasant food. It's often recommended to use fake meats more as transitional foods, while someone is finding more whole foods that work for them. It's really not that hard. Just eat a variety of whole plant foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes (beans, lentils, peas) and throw in a few nuts and seeds for extra protein/calories/healthy fats.

This is pretty much template for simple but tasty and healthy vegan diet. There are hundreds of variations on that particular template but it always invloves some legumes like beans, lentils, chickpeas, peas, whether in form of stew, burgers or stir fry, some tofu, TVP and seitan (which I don't even see as "mock meat" really, they're very basic nothing fancy), some grains like rice, oats and pasta, lots of vegetables, some nuts and seeds (flax and chia). Basic and cheap stuff with added plant drinks and occasional mock meats/processed stuff as a bonus. I'd put B12 supplement as essential, with D3 also recommended. I've also read that daily recommended intake of fiber is actually set quite lower than it should be because people on standard American diet can't even hit that number, apparently it should be 50+g of fiber. Awesome video as usual!

Great video idea. This is what people actually need. For example a thing like tofu is commonly used in japan and nobody there talks about if it's vegan or not. People around the world have plenty of vegan foods without thinking if they're vegan - they're just common foods that are available depending on the season. And the availability of meat can vary. Oatmilk products are also great in coffee, I prefer them over regular milk. And the local lebanese restaurant makes better falafel burgers than the other places's beef burgers, 15 euros with tzatziki and salad and freshly squeezed juice from actual fruits. Too bad it's tough to get nearly as good falafel for home. But if you want variety for your fries, sweet potato is always nice. My favourite breakfast is definitely oatmeal with strawberry jam and different seeds. And a spoonful of peanut butter. Whole-grain products are also great for protein. Bread, pasta, rice. If I was to first drop meat products from my diet, I would have to do basically nothing myself. Meat is such a minor part of the daily diet (although I do enjoy dinner foods with meat). What's personally problematic is not being able to eat beans and getting rid of milk products, because milk products on the other hand are fairly decent amount of my diet and especially an important protein source, being both cheap and rich in protein. And the amount of veggies to eat for the calories would be painful for my digestion issues (a bit limited on what veggies I can eat, but pear is great in terms of calorie density and taste). Some vegan products do have high calories, but on the other hand they're often full of fat and low on protein. So you might want to keep tabs on that fat intake if you like ready vegan food products. Besides avocado, a ton of your fresh veggies are usually next to no fat and low calorie. But high on fibre. One consideration about the enjoyability is if you live up in the north where you have a short summer i.e. growing season, so you don't get fresh veggies or great variety of them that much. But in that case you're still likely to live in a decently wealthy country with good store availability in import. It's not nearly as good as fresh growing season products and the prices climb up in the winter, but at least you can get them so you don't have to for example suffer from deficiencies (even if you're not a vegan, eat your vegetables as Omar Isuf says. And the god damn fruits, they're amazing if you check what's in season). Btw chefs DO suggest to throw the pasta in the sauce for a bit so it can absorb the sauce in the little crevices. You in fact showed nice little tips and tricks.

I haven't watched you in a while. Almost didn't recognize you. I'm vegan and I get between 75-105 g of protein out of about 2300 calories. I occasionally have mock meats but rarely. You love beans, tofu, tempeh (even less processed than tofu), and lentils. I do use a pea protein (Vivo Life) in either breakfast or dessert. That Trader Joe's coconut, chocolate, non-dairy stuff slaps. But usually I just blend up frozen fruit with my protein powder (which is flavored) and soy milk. Good for you adding ground flaxseed! That's one of the daily dozen. I also make sure to supplement B12 and D3!

Thanks for such an objective and informative video - you're awesome! I also appreciate the Brule/T+E references :P Don't be afraid of tofu though, it is a whole food (well, fermented, but, yeah, y'know). Also I'd recommend oat milk instead of almond - it's easy to make yourself but also FAR more sustainable especially in terms of water usage. Finally.... I want some of that ice cream! Hehe.

Except he clearly doesn't understand that he isn't getting those macro's post digestion. The bioavailability of the foods he ate, in the aggregate, don't exceed 60%. That means he only actually was able to absorb 60% of the nutrition he took in that day. The fiber content of the food he ate strips out and inhibits nutrient absorption as well so there's loss from that. Just right off the top he can cut 50g from his total protein intake. It's no wonder that as you progress longer and longer on a vegan diet that you have to eat more and more just to maintain what muscle you have and that as you get beyond the 6 year mark (where most people abandon veganism) that your body begins to waste away from the starvation you are putting it through.

Vegan for years and this is spot on, although the Chick’n Pesto burgers have like 21g of protein for about 140 calories, ingredient list is awesome too - that being said the Gardeins you picked up are awesome as well, just much lower protein. If you wanted to bump the protein numbers a bit on dinner - add cooked red lentils or especially tempeh to the pasta sauce. I do a tempeh bolognese all the time. Tempeh would bump up that protein number a solid 20g, it’s the closest thing to plain ol chicken breast in terms of macros, but it has lots of fiber and is fermented so it’s good for the gut. Add a few tablespoons of nutritional yeast as well and you could kick it up even higher - or just put it directly on the pasta. Anyway great video, nice to see someone actually do it right.

I get the truenutrition vegan protein (80% pea, 10% rice, 10% hemp, but you can customize) as it mixes better than others that I've tried, is cheaper (around $14.50/lb vs $22+ for Vega), and also you can get it unflavored! I don't like the artificial flavorings in my oatmeal as they usually clash with the fruit and leave an aftertaste but they have flavoring options if you like it. Tofu is a great protein source too
