Like, ALL of it. The Squeenix Trilogy is complete... except they keep releasing weird stuff so maybe it'll be a quadrilogy who knows.

One of my favorite stories about this game: There was an infamous bug since the game's launch with Iron Man's Ultimate where he uses the Hulk Buster and it locks up your controls. Players had been telling Crystal Dynamic about it for well over a year with it never being fixed. Fast forward to the game launching on Xbox Game Pass, and the developers are hosting a Microsoft sponsored live stream where, surprise, one of the devs gets stuck in the Hulk Buster. They all sit there in complete silence before one of them tries to quickly wrap the stream up as fast as possible. Completely embarrassing for everyone involved.

I find it really funny the story for his Avengers game is basically just an X-Men story, where Ms. Marvel is essentially a stand-in for Jubilee/Rogue/Shadowcat, AIM creating Sentinels, and the final boss basically just being a Not Master Mold.

Its even funnier when you consider that the MCU version of Ms. Marvel is a mutant instead of an Inhuman so there's a very good chance that we'll actually see her in an X-Men film, especially since the original version of Ms. Marvel was actually associated with the X-Men for a time during Chris Claremont's legendary run on the comic.

@@travisjordan3853 There’s no way Khan Ms. Marvel wasn’t originally meant to be a mutant before being changed to an Inhuman because Fox had the movie rights at the time. Her being a Inhuman is one of those things that just feels like a corporate mandate designed by committee type thing. Original Ms. Marvel was essentially only known because of her relation to the X-Men. Khan is also essentially a girl version of teenage Spider-Man when her comic starts. And her MCU power set is basically the X-Men character Armor.

I’ll never forget getting a “second person” glitch that happened in a online game where I was controlling cap, I could only see from the perspective of the person playing as Thor (unless I used a special move) and it’s probably the most unique glitch I’ve found in all my years of playing busted games

The biggest advantage this game has is that unlike other GAS games this one is actually playable offline (on consoles at least) so if you have it installed after the servers for it go down you can still play a good amount of it.

According to crystal dynamics that was Sonys fault not theirs. Sony refused to license it for other platforms, after initially agreeing to it.

@@Razsac according to the ex employee who did a reddit ama, Sony agreed to allow the character to be on all platforms as long as it was introduced on PlayStation first. The deal was basically "we get him at launch, the rest of the platforms get him a month later". So crystal dynamics spent time making the character and designing all the costumes, etc. Then just before launch, Sony said "actually no, we don't want him on any other platform" The reason it took like 14 months for him to show up was Square/Marvel/Sony negotiating to try and get him on all platforms. Eventually they realised Sony wasn't going to budge, so they gave up and reluctantly kept him playstation exclusive. He said that Sony had actually signed a contract and that Sony basically said they were prepared to fight legally even with the contract and drag things out legally so long that by the time it was sorted the game would no longer be getting updates anyway.

I stand by that if you don't care about the GaaS stuff and just play through the campaign (and dlc) and then drop it, it's totally worth the cost and a lot of fun. But I get the game kinda shot itself in the foot with a lack of identity.

I played it a while back i believe after the 4th DLC was released. I did have number of bugs and glitches. The progress loot based system was not something I liked. But overall I would say it is an OK game (6/10). Just doing the single player stuff maybe some challenges was fun enough. Sadly the bugs or lack of identity does not allow me to state it is a good game.

Also taste in games is very individual and if at least when I compared years 2013 to 2016 vs 2020 to 2023 (first 3 years of current and previous console generations) I found more games last gen that I wanted to play. But do not get me wrong I'm gaming since early '90 and I still enjoy gaming. I often play a bit older games, I'm on a look out for interesting indie titles. And from time to time a game which is just OK is fine for me, if I do not like something or bounce back I might not continue playing it. There are some exceptions though where games got high review scores but I like them less (example I though horizon zero Dawn was very good but I have trouble to get invested in the forbidden west but I will still finish this game, though I doubt I will rate it higher than just OK).

I decided to replay the story and I went, "huh, this opens like a fanfiction." I've been writing them for a decade and it took forever for me to se why the plot felt somehow familiar until the "Kamala's fanfiction" concept just clicked in. Marvel's Avengers is a criminally underrated game. I had even more fun than on Guardians of the Galaxy, because ton of playable characters with entirely different combat mechanics. The campaign was surprisingly good and destroying everything with Hulk was an amazing experience.

As someone who was covering and playing this game since launch, you pretty much nailed it with my thoughts here. The campaigns really gave the game a lot of heart and fun that made me really want to go all in on the game and hope for more stuff, and I went exploring every little bit of lore and dialogue I could find, but then the game's focus to its broken grindy side drags the game down after wakanda's campaign with the raid.

The game is actually really fun to play. Only 2 issues with it - 1. inconsistent speed of heroes to compensate for multiplayer aspect, where Widow has to be able to catch up to Iron Man + 2. lack of more diverse content, more bosses and so on

@@nailinthefashion what makes this kinda funny is that Ultimate Alliance 3's development duties was given to Koei Tecmo who owns Omega Force, the development studio that made Dynasty Warriors, but they gave it to Team Ninja who does DOA and Ninja Gaiden and did assistance for Hyrule Warriors. So in an alternate universe, we could have had UA3 be a Warriors game. If UA4 becomes a thing I hope it becomes a Warriors game

Leaving a comment to say that if you're a huge Marvel fan and haven't played Midnight Suns yet, do it. Get all the DLC characters and play it. It's genuinely my favorite superhero game I've ever played. It's not just the card-based battles, it's genuinely the best writing and relationships between characters that I've ever seen in a superhero game. Plus, there's a big part of the game where you're exploring the grounds figuring out supernatural mysteries and unlocking new powers for yourself under Agatha Harkness's guidance. It's my favorite game of last year and I just had to come say something about it in the discussion of marvel games being hit or miss. If you can deal with a few humorous bugs that have no effect on the gameplay, it's wonderful.

You showing your enjoyment from the little stupid things you could do in this game (whether intentional or not, like the wrestling references or that 0% glitch) made me realise… They really need to make another comic video game. As in one that isn’t ‘live action’. Or at least one with realistic graphics but isn’t trying to be. Being able to really explore the comic fun of the characters we love be playable would be something only video games can do. That’s why I hope Spider-Man has a spider verse game or one just based on the comics to allow for more wacky gameplay that would ‘break immersion’ in the current insomniac run.

I got it for $15 after the "yo we ruined this, I'm sorry" update so all the boosters and costumes were free. Honestly...it was fun. I got my money out of it, some of the characters were a lot of fun to play as (honestly, cap fun. Not good, but fun). Story was fine, I honestly REALLY liked the first two DLC storylines. that said...holy crap at full price, this was blatantly awful.

I also played through The Avengers before they announced the final patch and I can definitely agree with Austin, if you just focus on the singleplayer you're probably gonna have a good time (especially for the prices it's going for ahead of delisting). Especially now that they made the cosmetics available with ingame currency, which not only includes the costumes, but also the finishing moves as well. Just a nice, competent 3D Brawler with some cinematic setpieces sprinkled in when it's not giving you pretty standard-y videogame objectives.

As someone like myself who's been playing this game since the very beginning of the beta, you've perfectly explained a lot of the feelings people who are playing Avengers for the longest have been feeling. I legitimately love all the single player content in this game but like you said it's the games as a service stuff that just takes away from a lot of the good. If this was just a co-op game like the ultimate alliance ones then I think it would have been a 8 out of 10 all the way around. But all the other BF just took away from the great experience. As someone who had a great time with this game (clocking around 35 hours with it since launch), this was honestly a super refreshing take on the game. Most of the takes I've seen on it just write it off and say "live service = bad" without understanding why it doesn't always work. This one actually goes a little more into why live service elements can be detrimental while still try to acknowledge what the game does well. When I've personally thought about it more, the more I think the game is better when you're just experiencing the campaigns and goofing around with the missions than when you're actively pursuing something and trying to get those numbers up.

Also, by playing on the PS5 you probably missed the elevator skits used for loading. They would play according to your party members and Iron Man had some of the best. I really wish they could turn the elevator skip into an option, i really missed these when i moved to the PS5.

A shame you didn't mention the AIM Cloning Lab, which was MODOK's return and chronologically how the Avengers got the Winter Soldier free from AIM, until the mission chain A Dark and Heavy Star has them looking for the Winter Soldier protocols and making sure Monica can never use them again. Plus I memorized the enemies' moves and all the tricks, so it was more easy know thy enemy and all. Though before the cloning lab there was a story focused villain sector No Rest For the Wicked that reveals Monica is using the protocols to harness MODOK's powers because at this point she's running out of resources and clones and is taking desperate measures.

I finally played it with a couple of buds. It had some moments like smashing stuff as the Hulk doing his Running Dash moves while smashing random things like a idiot while my friend are screaming that was cool! Acting like a always angry out of control Hulk just makes him fun and a treat for your friends to see. It also helps keep his Gamma Meter up. Another fun time was when I was a Silver Iron Man (Cosplaying War Machine) and my friend was also Iron Man flying around randomly landing next to each other shooting blasting enemies and just flying away at the same time while the other guy says that it actually looks cool from his perspective. Those moments are pretty far and between but it is a ok game with friends. It sucks playing with randoms.

The subtitles you mentioned are actually a specific type called SDH or Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of hearing. They describe a lot of background sounds and actions in addition to any spoken lines.

The two things I'll always remember about this game is the fact that it squandered a great concept to be a GASS-y game. And the fact most people didn't like the looks of the characters because they looked like knockoff versions of the movie versions. I think most people could have gotten over the second thing but making it a live service thing ruined it. Their story writers were written by some of the Walking Dead crew at Telltale(of the worst seasons of course), and the people who worked on Minecraft Story Mode. Here's an idea, if a game company is going under and their games are heavily focused on the writing, don't pick up the leftovers of their writing team and make them lead writers. So many people flocked to give Telltale employees a job, and Crystal Dynamics is one of the developers that paid the price for it. Not to say that Avengers needs to have an amazing story, but not one that detracts from the overall product. That doesn't even get into the button mashy 2006 licensed movie game level gameplay. It's abhorrently mundane for the day and age it came out.

I got two theories as to why Ms. Marvel wasn't revealed during the E3 presentation: 1) She wasn’t planned to be in the game initially, but Marvel or her creator, Sana Amanat, forced her inclusion half-way in development. This caused CD to massively rework the game around her and lose time actually making a good an working product. 2) She was going to be in the game from the start, but CD hid her reveal until years later due to potential backlash. Let's face it, the moment her trailer dropped, we all knew this wasn’t going to be an Avengers story. It's going to be a Ms. Marvel origin story.

It helped that i played coop with a friend and man, the game really gives you that feel of power and be in a team with the most powerfull people of the world. I actually think the single player campaign is a good game. It’s obvious Crystal Dynamics excels at single player games. The way they use Kamala to reassemble the Avengers was inspired and very much a good use of her comic book essence. Even when it launched, bugs and all, I thought it was good. It’s the live service nonsense that hurt the game. This was my first ever live service game and it was not a winning introduction. The loot crap made my eyes glaze over when I was forced to use it. The repetition of AIM robots and the dearth of actual compelling villains was so tiring and after all the Spiderman hype for it just to be a character insert and not a full DLC character story really disappointed me and I stopped going back in altogether. The high point for me was the Black Panther Wakanda DLC, it scratched an itch I never knew I had making me more excited for a Black Panther standalone game. In all the Avengers debacle was sad because it didn’t just overwhelmingly suck, there were glimmers of hope buried in a live service/multiplayer hellscape.

Ghost of Tsushima has the same raid issue. The raids are absurdly complicated and trying to random into one is a surefire fail. That could be interesting if it wasn't tied to a trophy. Tsushima is one of my favorite games of all time and the multiplayer is way more fun than it has a right to be, but locking completion behind something potentially impossible is absolutely braindead. I eventually got on the Discord to get a completion, but what if the community had already dried up? I genuinely believe trophies that require servers and multiplayer after launch for a single player game should be abolished. That 100% shouldn't be tainted.

Studio execs need to realize that live-service PvE looters like Destiny or Monster Hunter World are notoriously hard to design and maintain. There's a reason some of the biggest live-service franchises are competitive PvP games and not PvE... Fortnite, Valorant, Street Fighter, League of Legends, etc, etc. Because of the nature of PvP, progression is ultimately measured through the players' own growth in skill, not a metric like a boost in stats. As long as the players can continually raise the skill ceiling and hone their skills with one another through competition, a competitive game can survive. This isn't the case with live-service PvE games. The base game has to either be exceptionally excellent in its design, or the game keeps continually getting updated with new content for years. Basically asking the devs to pick their poison...
