There is actually a reason why Piers doesn't like Dynamaxing! On the back of Piers' normal League Card it states: "Spikemuth lacks a Power Spot that would allow Pokémon to Dynamax, and thus not many fans come to visit the town. Piers feels responsible for allowing his town to fall into obscurity and dilapidation. Once in battle, Piers tends to get riled up and will often reveal his strategy early on, but he has the strength and skill to triumph regardless. However, his true passions are singing and song writing, and his talents in these fields are well-known. As such, he currently hopes that his younger sister will take over as Gym Leader." On the back of his rare League Card it states: "Here are some words from Piers when he first became the Gym Leader of Spikemuth. "Uh... ... ... The name's Piers. It's too bad we can't Dynamax our Pokémon in Spikemuth, but you could say we have a more authentic style of Pokémon battles. And I plan on showin' that off. And well... I have a younger sister, and she's got way more talent than me. But until she's old enough to become Gym Leader, I'll keep rockin' with my crew and make sure Spikemuth stays lively!"

I ABSOLUTELY ADORE HOP. IF THERE'S NO HOP DEFENDERS I AM DEAD. I was so excited to hear you say what you did for him, as I 100% agree-I genuinely wished there was a story option where if you lost to him in the final battle he could actually become champion then battle (and hopefully win against) Leon. I wanted that so bad for him. I'm literally just here to catch pokemon that are a slightly different color, I don't need to be the champion of the region! Let my boy have this!! So the reason Piers isn't a fan of Dynamaxing is the fact their stadium is the only one that didn't get built over a den. In fact, the reason their town is so run down is because they have little to no tourism to their town. The people of the town decided to add the stadium to themselves so they could get some tourism but had to turn their whole town into the gym challenge since they didn't have the funding to actually build a stadium. Marnie's whole reason for taking on the challenge is to bring more popularity to her town and team yell are trying to hinder other challengers to help Marnie come out on top. Literally the entire towns people are doing their best to bring attention to their little town because it wasn't built over a natural dynamax spot, and they've had to compensate so their town doesn't end up off the map.

​@@FrostLotto whilst you're right that the game does provide this information... It's on the Trainer Cards. In fact, I think it's specifically on Piers' Rare Trainer Card (but I could be wrong). I'm a completionist, and it sounds like you are too, so I went out of my way to collect all the cards, but I'd bet most of the casual players didn't even know that there was information on them, since the game doesn't inform you of this fact at any point, so it's understandable that Arlie completely missed this bit of lore. The same is true of Marnie; unlike Bede or Hop, the main story doesn't bother to give her any sort of character arc, relegating her lore to these entirely optionals bits of reading material. Sorry for the long reply, but as someone who loves both Pokémon and lore, whilst the Trainer Cards were a neat idea, much like the main story, they weren't executed well.

I like how drINK could also be read as "Dr. Ink." As for Piers, I think the explanation for why he doesn't like to DMax is that since it's impossible to do so in Spikemuth (you need a source of energy for it to be possible and Spikemuth just so happens to be the only major city to not be built atop one of these energy sources), he wants to prove that battles in Galar can be fun and exciting without the need to DMax.

The dedication a badge quest requires is absolutely insane. I like shiny hunting, and I’ve done a few full odds hunts, but I would lose my mind if I tried doing a badge quest. All those phases for Milcery, going nearly double odds for Stunfisk and Snom, and especially hitting 5 digits for Phantump… Nothing but respect for completing this badge quest

i totally agree with you about sword/shield’s gym battles! I’ll never forget how I felt the first time they started dynamaxing and the music changed, I got so excited and hyped up! I think this gen does the best job at the gym challenges and making the gyms actually feel important!! especially compared to older generations where no one cares at all that you’re taking on the gym challenge :/ Great vid!!

I was playing through Sword again for like the millionth time not long ago and found a shiny Skorupi randomly! I wasn't doing any kind of Shiny hunting; was just traveling from one town to the next, encountered in 2; first one was normal, second was shiny. Had a quiet celebration (it was late at night and everyone else was asleep) and caught it quickly; such a cute little pinkish-red scorpion!!

Really fun video! Doing a Shiny Badge Quest myself rn, tbh I might give up after I get Wooloo because I don't even think I like random encounter hunts (soft reset hunts are my fave, so fun), but yeah lol. Anyway, as someone that's beaten this game twice, here's my perspective on two story things. 1. Here's how I look at Piers not using Dynamax. The way I imagine it is that he wants to be so strong that he doesn't need it. It also fits into his punk aesthetic, him not being apart of the Galar gym leader mold by rejecting their tradition. 2. I think the dissonance between how the protagonists are allowed to respond to these high stakes stories in Emerald and SwSh reflects how these games are written. Generation 3 has an intentionally really simple story, as it's a GBA game and most games on that console weren't expected to have much in the way of story. Mother 3 is an exception, of course (I haven't really played many other story driven GBA games, maybe there are some other gems too). There's some depth covered in Tama Hero's great video on RSE, but if you look at RSE on it's own without seeing how it reflects a real world issue, it's a pretty simple and imo kind of dumb story. Which is fine, the point isn't the story, the point is the adventure which is why you're always able to partake in whatever danger's approaching. SwSh is written in a more in universe way, a child wouldn't be logically allowed to partake in city level threats. I do think it's really interesting contrasting how gens 1-4 and gen 5 onwards are written
