ADHD causes specific deficits in executive function, and these can cause a myriad of symptoms including emotional and behavioural instability, reduced working memory, and as well as this, time agnosia (better known as time blindness). In this video I go through five symptoms that I experience at University that are related to time blindness, and talk about an important concept called waiting mode anxiety.

Surprised to see how few views this has, and how few subscribers you have! This was excellent. A large part of my struggles with ADHD are caused by time agnosia and the not doing anything when there’s a scheduled event thing. Even when I have work that needs to be ready for a client call in the afternoon, I usually don’t do any work all day until 15 minutes before the call :(

Hi Davak, I’m so glad this video resonated with you. I totally experience what you’re going through. ADHD means we tend to lose focus when we should be working, so we have to work when we should be relaxing. Probably what I hate most about having ADHD- the impact on my family life and spending time with my loved ones.

I love that you named it "Now, or not now". Every time I get a small task or email or ping I need to respond to it NOW or I will completely forget. It makes it harder to do focus work and I find myself working later to get it done when everyone has clocked out (and then I lose track of time...and then lose all my free evening hours....). Anyways, I'm not diagnosed or anything but this is just a very relatable video that makes me feel a lot better about getting through these struggles. 😅

Yes, these are for sure the struggles we face daily 😭 this certainly sounds in part like ADHD. Definitely check out some of my other videos - including this primer into ADHD, you may/may not have it. Thanks for talking about this. I was late diagnosed (2yrs ago, at age 42 - a lot of damage done by then!). I'm in a senior management role at a global corporate (somehow!!), and these time-related issues you're flagging will only feel 20 x worse when you're working in what I'm sure will be a high responsibility role given your alma mater and fact you'll have a PhD. Waiting mode anxiety just can't happen, unfort things like mid-morning team meetings are non-negotiables (and a killer for us!). It's great to have strategies as a student, my advice would be to tackle the causes too. Unfort the rest of the world operates differently from us...

I appreciate this grown-up approach to the topic and am very interested in hearing practical ways to manage adult ADHD. "Waiting mode" is a tough one for me.

Thank you so much! That part about waiting anxiety really resonates with me, and i didn't know it was even a thing until now. The other day my doctor was supposed to call me between 12pm and 4pm, and i even neglected making food for really long, because i thought to myself "what if i start making food now and then the call comes, and i'll burn something because i'm not focusing on the food", but in the end i actually did get the call while i was making food and it wasn't an issue.

Omg waiting mode anxiety happens to me all the time!! So last night i have a meeting scheduled at 9pm, and between 5 to 8pm I'm like do i have time to get dinner? I have meeting at 9pm! It's ridiculous and irrational but it happens so often 😭

Great video!! I am very much struggling with « now or not now ». As a graduate student, I find it extremely hard to juggle several research projects at the same time. Would love to hear more about your management system for it!

Hey Mariam, good idea. I will certainly make some videos on PhD life with ADHD at some point (when I’m feeling motivated). How I read papers, how I write papers, how I manage success and failure as a PhD, and other videos about my experience as a PhD student with ADHD. Thanks!

I have spent days and days over the years just looking at the screen unable to focus or remember what I was doing and ended up with less than one line on the screen after 8 hours of just sitting there. It’s just so frustrating and now I see it in my son…

Thank you so much for this channel, your videos are so helpful. I'm in my 40's and was diagnosed with ADHD and started medication a few years ago...it feels like I was born seeing in black and white while everyone else could see in color and didn't know why I just couldn't get it together. It's a lot of work to keep up with others who don't have it. I totally relate to everything you are talking about. I also have anxiety disorder and these two combined are quite a challenge to manage.

Great informative video! I'm in University myself, I was wondering does your Uni make any adjustments for your ADHD? Mine doesn't and it's aggravating me considering the time blindness aspect being such a detrimental issue.

For me one minute can easily become an hour wasted. I get time lapses and I am always stressed out for the amount of time that elapsed and not getting much done and then falling behind at a daily basis.

I can relate so closely to this Jacques. I try to keep a note on a whiteboard of the "REAL" hours i'm spending working so I can track how small fluctuations in my day distract me (i.e. meetings, the gym, outings, etc.)

Greetings - I'm a student at Oxford U, with recently diagnosed ADHD and definitely time issues (though no emotional regulation difficulties (not highs) here). I'm desperate to find a like, very reliable, body double for studying. Any suggestions? There ought to be a venue for this that doesn't subject one to junk responses. .. Thank you.
