The spell that's cast on Izutsumi seems so sinister: it wraps around her throat like a collar, it triggers, if she's away from the caster too long, and it summons a horrifying, knife-wielding hag-demon figure. What else could it be, but some kind of enslavement bond, right? In the manga, there's a hilarious extra that explains it was actually a _babysitting_ spell invented by the mage Maizuru who brought up Shuro (The one who cooked together with Senshi). She thinks of the paper-doll-based figure it summons as a harmless child-minder, who gently ushers the little tyke home, when it's time to stop playing outside and go to bed. She is _completely oblivious_ to how terrifying it is to everyone else. Shuro was utterly traumatised by it as a child, when it started chasing him one day.

The reason why Kabru's party gets wiped all the time, even though he's such a badass fighter is because he's 100% dialled in to humans (which in this world means all the humanoid races), both on a social level and in fighting tactics, but he's leading a raid against monsters. He's a PvP expert trying to PvE and not realising when his skills and assumptions don't transfer (Like standing there in front of a giant sea serpent, and searching for the human weak spot of the carotid artery). Laios, on the other hand, is a total monster-lore otaku, and socially he's _clearly_ somewhere on the neurodivergent spectrum. He thrives in the dungeon environment, but he can't even _talk_ to another person without coming across as a weirdo, sooner or later.

This show is the perfect mix of elements for me. Funny, charming, surprisingly realistic, deep world building, compelling story, cool magic, complex characters, great animation, great acting in both english and japanese, and it doesn't have the usual anime sexualization tropes, in fact, it also has unique and different body types for different characters, female and male. Kabru is essentially a reverse Laios and I think that's beautiful While Laios knows a LOT about monsters and nothing about people, Kabru pays way too much attention to people to the point of being creepy

While watching this show, all I could think about is what the equivalent ingredients for most of these would be in real life. Some can be a straight 1:1 like with scorpion, while others you use a little imagination and figure it out from there (the squid's parasite seeming like barbequed eel after it's done or the dryad fruits being pumpkins as examples). It's pretty cool, and it makes me hope that (if one doesn't exist already) there will be a Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon cookbook published in the future!

This was Fantastic & Delicious 🤤 with this being an animated adaptation of Ch. 1 - 52 & even greater news is that there will be a Season 2 (TBA) which if we get another 24 episodes then that will finish up the rest of the manga, but it would also be great if we got shorts based on the extra chapters & here are a few fun facts: - For Ep. 11 in the manga when Marcille causes the bridge down onto the Red Dragon instead of being on top of it she was on the top of a nearby building, & there are scenes cut like where after Marcille was done healing the first 2 Senshi opened the Red Dragon’s mouth then climbed into it to retrieve Laios leg & another during the flashback where Laios & Falin overhear the townsfolk taking about seeing a dead person then when sneaking out Laios encounters the family dogs - When Chilchuck says that Marcille was a “Dark Elf” that statement was expanded in a side drawings from the manga artist Ryouko Kui explaining that there are no such thing as a race known as Dark Elves this is because at the start with some Elves helping out other races (while acting superior due to them living longer) by teaching them knowledge (like how to cure diseases or what is edible) which others loved this, but then this lead to many incidents of others races going up to some other Elves trying to get some free knowledge only to then get beaten up by that Elf (they drew an Elf using a bat with nails) which resulted in the misconception that there are 2 different kind of Elf races one good & one evil - In Ep.12 there are some cut scenes like when they were putting the skeletons together they note that Human & Dogs have different toe bones in particular that for Dogs theirs are longer, they skipped the scene with an image of Marcille letting down her hair before the resurrection spell, before talking about going back to the surface Laios & Chilchuck were talking about why was there a bathhouse in a Human city which Chilchuck says that legend says that the city used both Elf & Dwarf technology then offered a drink to Laios which he declined even though it was practically like water, & after that the 2 discussed about being broke while it would be hard to get any part of the Red Dragon in good condition back up to the surface except maybe some blood or saliva (ambergris) - Notice when they showed the dead goats scene in the anime there is a shadow that is over it is suppose to represent Falin - In Ep. 13 There was a bit of a hint that the Dragon was also in Falin before the Mad Mage called her that where if you payed attention to when Falin punched Laois away notice that her left eye is closed the same eye that they stabbed the Dragon’s eye before defeating it - Falin was Right Laois can impersonate a Dog Perfectly exposing this version of a Shapeshifter has traits of both the Kitsune when is transformed into that canine form has multiple tails & Tanuki when after defeating it the food transformed back into leaves which Tanuki use to trick people - The Nightmare is interesting with it based on the Shin from Japanese mythology which are said to be dragons that take the form of clams when they enter water & they believed that it could breathe mirages which interestingly in Japanese the word mirages is “Shinkirō” which if you break it up can reference the creature Shin, then “ki” can mean breathe, & “rō” or “rou” can be short for “roukaku” meaning tower as in like a building or fortress which could be a reference to the clam shell - The Barometz is based on the mythical Vegetable Lamb of Tartary also known under the latin name Planta Tartarica Barometz & while this sheep is more like a fruit that tastes like meat while in the myth the sheep was connected like a umbilical cord which it would grazed around the plant this also was the myth of how cotton is grown - In Ep. 21 with Marcelle trying on all of these clothes the people have her put on reminds me that the manga artist Ryoko Kui also had most of the characters in various modern outfits & even exchanging their normal attire with another party in the extra material - Marcille’s familiar that she called a “Sky Fish” reminds me of the crypid called Air Rods / Flying Rods (also called Sky Fish) which appear on photos & video recordings, but when Laois cut it showing the inside reminds me of Maki / Makizushi - The horse that the Sensei & the other Dwarves had was named Anne which is the same name that Senshi named the Kelpie - I love how the Changelings are mushrooms in this series because in the actual European myth of a Changeling is a human-like creature that various supernatural creatures like fairies who would replace children that they kidnapped with it & a Fairy Ring which are fungi grown in a circle which are believed to where fairies dwell or the site of Witches dancing on Walpurgis Night, so it’s very clever combing them making transforming mushroom (classic trope) which the manga artist Ryōko Kui recreated the first chapter with them in their new forms (the red dragon is replaced with Falin & added Izutsumi) for Ch. 50 while also made a cover for Ch. 51 showing how each of the party member would look like if they were either a Tall-Man (Human), Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, or Gnome - The first Gargoyle was transformed into the Bocca della Verità or the Mouth of Truth which in legend if anyone that put their hand in it will be bitten off if they told a lie
