I’m glad this video was made. Not just for the fun factor of the usual KB shenanigans, but to prove a point about the safety of the RN50. Mark Serbu was given a litany of unwarranted grief for a failure that can and now has happened in any 50 cal rifle. Good on you for making these videos.
@aikidodude052 жыл бұрын
this is not the video to prove the safety of the RN50 that video was the orginal that explained just how spicy the round was to cause that to happen ie the orginal video. guns can blow up if they are pushed to far the debate is on what kind of failure is better semis are gonna ballon and throw shrapnel randomly. breach loading on the other hand has less shrapnel but its directional right toward you.
@justusbladetooth2 жыл бұрын
@@aikidodude05 Yes, but the point of it is. It's a big round, going big kaboom, in a big way. Any functional weapon in that situation becomes an incredibly dangerous, design be damned. Basically; the point is firearms are dangerous, and by willingly using them YOU are accepting the risk that something can go wrong. Always have supplies in the unlikely event of a critical injury, and be prepared. Save your breath debating gun failures, for learning to save someone's life if it does happen.
@aikidodude052 жыл бұрын
@@justusbladetooth your missing the trees for the forest and yes i said that way on purpose. I didnt want to have to do it but KB test while its a vaild test is very inaccurat because its not simulating actually shouldering to fire essentially the the gun and torso are positioned in a way that the person would be fired at retention which gives a massive target. secondly on inspecting it he said there was damage to the chest and he showed it but he didnt have any shrapnel to dig out and something to note here is that the damage is in a slash and in the slowmo we can see chunks of the gun actually falling against the chest. so was it actually hit or did say part of the barrel ding it when it bounced back into the dummy. then the shoulder what matters here is the size its tiny compared to what came off the RN50 its the size of your nail were on the RN the pieces were the size of your thumb be cause in failing it will shear off the those big ears and because its a breach loaded its coming straight back toward you. what people are talking with semi vs breach on failure and safety is that the nature of if a semi auto means that instead of the Directional explosion you get from the RN50 alof ot the power is reduced from the whole bolt and spring making the failure into a grenades instead of a shotgun. Ie your gonna have a bad day but you have a better chance at not at reduced injuries.
@aikidodude052 жыл бұрын
@@justusbladetooth iangerous yes but no the design actualy does have an effect again. see when a semi auto/ full auto fails the bolt is designed to move and has a spring so you already have something absorbing some of the blast redirecting it sideways as all that force is going to go the easiest way ie grenade instead of shotgun. breachloaders on the other hand dont have moving parts it has to act like a cannon when it fails it goes off like shot gun everything comes straight back at the shooter. Im not shiting on breach loaders they are fantasic, im just sick of this well a semi failing would be just as bad a breechloader failure and that's just not true

Brandon Herrera explained it quite well on one of his Darwin Awards videos that also featured Scott's RN-50 accident. Self-loading weapons have "less severe" catastrophic malfunctions because you have some chunk of the firearm's receiver when the gun does explode, compared to single shot firearms like the RN-50. That said and as what this video shows, it's still not a good day for whoever is having this happen in their face.

Had your head been on the cheekrest of this barett you'd likely be dead. More moving parts = more complicated shrapnel, less moving parts = less sharpnel hitting harder. Clean juggular cut and punctured lung, vs blindness and possible complex tear of the juggular.
@marv84812 жыл бұрын
I think the next segment in this series, maybe a side quest, if you will, should be to build a .50bmg gun that can fire that spicy round. Since Brandon is making a .50 bmg Ak, Scott could build the most over built .50bmg. This being more of a side item to other videos and op round testing in other guns.

But the question then becomes: HOW overcharged? Because if you double load the primer and fill it to the brim with flash powder the M2HB barrel would be "a pencil barrel" by comparison to something that could handle it.

BMG+P? Yes, please do. BTW: there is a practical limit to the pressure that can be handled by just using a bigger chunk of metal... if you care if it works for more than 1-2 rounds. How about a .22 or .38
@mattmarzula2 жыл бұрын
@@troybarnes473 nearly impossible for well built .22's because you simply can't put that much powder in them. Even level five Ramset blank cartridges won't really do much unless it's like a cheap Bearman Derringer pistol and you have a barrel obstruction. The gases will find the path of least resistance and just vent. Sometimes that results in the brass actually crushing inward away from the chamber. Now .38? I'll put it like this. Revolvers don't have the same pressure spikes as semiauto pistols. The cylinder gap would generally vent gases out the sides. Standard .38 SPL loads operate between 15,000-17,000 psi. Low pressure in the firearms world. .357 is significantly higher at 29,000-39,000 psi. I've seen a Smith and Wesson 686 with two full house .357 mag bullets stacked in the barrel behind a squib load with barely a budge. Firearm instructors... Generally, a firearm is designed to withstand normal and even over pressure ammo for thousands of rounds. But case dimensions and space available for powder in straight wall pistol cartridges generally won't exceed the construction of a well-built firearm. Especially a revolver with a stainless steel chamber. So in short... That's a stupid suggestion.

1 minor detail to remember, the Barrett is Recoil operated, you can see in the slo-mo the barrel going backward slightly which pushes the bolt back, similar to how most modern handguns work. Since it's not Gas Operated, the pressure isn't getting vented at all, which might not be a very good thing in this case! Im super interested though about what other calibers will do in an overcharge! Like 5.56 I would say test it on a GM6 Lynx, as the Long Recoil action is theoretically very safe, but you can buy a house or a new truck for how much one of those cost. These last two videos proves that Serbu's design is just as rugged and safe as the "original" .50 cal - the Barett. If i was Serbu i would donate both guns, the ammo and probably a decent amount of money for this video. Since its is coming from Kentucky himself, who was the victim of the explosion it carries much more weight. And by letting Kentucky post it it will reach most of those who saw the original video. I guess this also demostrates how the locking system makes a difference in such a scenario. The RN-50 is basically just a barrel with a trigger and a stock. The explosion had to either split open the barrel or blow off the cap, it did the latter. The Barrett has a bolt that is locked into the barrel, a barrel that is designed to move back under recoil (it's short recoil operated, not gas operated like Scott said in the video). Explosions like to take the path of least resistance, in both cases that's whatever locks the gun. The RN-50 "locking system" offers much greater resistance than the Barrett locking system. Alot more energy went into the cap of the RN-50 in order to sheer off the threads AND the ears and free the explosion than was needed to unlock the bolt from the barrel on the Barrett. So on the Barrett that explosion wasn't contained for as long as it was on the RN-50 giving it more chance to put energy into every direction, whereas on the RN-50 the explosion had to put more energy into the parts directly connected to it (namely the cap). So I would say the Barrett exploding is less dangerous because the energy of the explosion is going into more directions where the shooter isn't than with the RN-50 where that cap and the sheered of ears take alot of the energy and that energy is throwing those parts into the direction of the shooter. If I had to choose, I'd pick the Barrett. Luckily I don't have to choose.

@jemlesvideo2 жыл бұрын
Breaking point are known, because operating pressure are told by manufacturer. They can't sell guns not completly stress tested. More over, they do not even need to custom load a round and try due to the fact that materials used and their thickness have resistance standards determined mathematically by engineers, so they know exactly What pressure the parts can handle overall, and they know where to use soft or hard metal within the gun. Same logic is used on any manufactured object, like an engine (Exemple : How much revs and compression a conrod can handle and what material/casting to use to be the safest and the cheapest to produce ). What interesting is that overcharged bullets are sold/produced somewhere and they are obviously not fit for any gun ! And I don't know What's the purpose of such rounds if it can't be fired... Except only for booby trapping people. I can only tell that reason, and it's a serious case that needs a guilty !

The Barrett M82 is not gas operated (1:48). It is short recoil operated. This is why the barrel travels rearward with the bolt carrier group to extract the spent casing, and why the barrel has a dual spring carriage to return it to its forward position, rather than a gas port and gas tube to vent gas from behind the fired round.
@rootbeer6662 жыл бұрын
Scott, you're the man. A lot of us had wondered what would have happened that day if you shot a different rifle. You've made your point, there were injuries to the shooter in this case too, and seeing how your cheek would have been on that upper part, there's no telling how bad your injury would have been. I'm surprised to see that the bolt didn't leave the gun. While it wasn't possible to replicate the exact same failure on the RN50 with the shearing of the locking tabs, it is certainly enough load to break apart these rifles. Thanks for letting us all learn. Is it a redemption for the RN50 rifle? I don't know... As far as seeing that the Barrett didn't fail at the barrel, I suppose that's not ideal. Could the Barrett have fired without the magazine? Probably could have saved you a magazine right there, though no telling how that would have affected your test.

Very impressive! I predicted that any other .50 BMG design would fail in a safer way than the RN-50. Not sure if I was right. I do think all the extra steel the Barrett has behind the breech stopped any large pieces from coming straight back. Some chunks went out the side fast enough to take off your arm though. When the RN-50 blew, the heavy breech cap came straight at very high velocity and wasn't recovered. I think Barrett could make the gun safer if they created a pressure relief system, maybe leave a small part of the case unsupported, with a path for gas to escape when overloaded. Every home pressure cooker has a feature like this. The Mauser 1898 had a port to vent gas, and a bolt face that doesn't fully enclose the case head. Ammo is better now, but some bolt action rifles still have gas ports, either into the magazine well or out the side. Do any .50 BMG designs have a gas venting feature?
@heartysteer87522 жыл бұрын
As Scott said, he expected the bolt to come back and relieve the pressure, like a pressure cooker. Plus it has the bore to relieve pressure, just has to move the bullet out of the way first. It relieved pressure out of the gaping holes on both sides of the receiver and still had enough pressure go bow the top and bottom. And it went down the magazine to blow the bottom out of that. So... not seeing how you propose to create another gas path that is going to be effective in this sort of situation. Didn't understand why he thinks the bullet disintegrated because of the brass spray coating. Where did the casing go? Seems to me a more likely source.
@SilvaDreams2 жыл бұрын
Well it's also gas operated and the shell ejects out the side port which allows for the overpressure to vent off to the side more so unlike the RN-50 it's not all blowing back in the operator's face.

I dont think any pressurereleasesystem could handle a load almost 4 times greater as it was designed to do so. Remember 55k psi is the regular workload and he put a bullet with almost 4 times that pressure inside the gun. I am no scientist, but that amount of power will make a mark, in this case a really big one, no matter what safety would be built behind that

@@Kinsanth_ yeah I’m with you on that one I highly doubt any gun has a pressure release efficient enough to handle that amount of pressure

This was a great experiment to run to show just how dangerous any questionable round can be. A lot of people were trying to blame Serbu himself for some design flaw in his rifle and this just flat out destroys that misinformed narrative. Even the most trusted gun manufacturer on the planet can have their product destroyed with ammunition outside of it's recommended range. This isn't a ground breaking discovery to most of us but it is a great example to point to when you get one of those noodleheads parroting some half-baked theory rather than understanding the obvious explanation of over-loaded rounds. Thanks for doing this test and I think it would be highly beneficial to do some more over-pressure testing on other types of firearms to see their limits.

But the gun I fan boy over is made of pixie dust and unicorn farts, it would never blow up over a spicey round. It only blows up if you press the red button on the bottom. The Zorg ZF-1 is the best.

I agree. I had multiple arguments online about the RN-50 when that happened to Scott, but like we've just seen here, a failure to this extreme with these pressures, can be lethal. Unless it's a 100lb tank barrel with a breech able to handle a hand grenade with no issues, I think most of not all 50 cal rifles on the market will violently explode sending parts and shrapnel everywhere. I doubt there is one design that will fully protect the shooter or resist from exploding. Thus, we will find out more as Scott continues this trend.

Dude, I'm from brazil, and I've never shot any gun ever, so that mag dump in the beginning got my heart racing!! What a damn beautiful and powerful gun, the closest I got from shooting was on CoD lol

That bullet flip landing was awesome and the slow motion really set it off. Just like it did for the gun explosion. Like the back and forth into the final real time explosion. Total destruction of gun. Amazing. Always informative and fun to watch. Great video

My jaw dropped when you landed that casing on the primer. Lol one in a million. Post video viewing edit: I love how you are taking something traumatic and turning it into science and warning for all! I will be continuing this science adventure with you Scott!

It didn't land on the primer. The open end of the case stuck into the ground. I still agree that it was really cool.

Very interesting and somewhat surprising results, I expected similar results to what Scott suggested, not that level of carnage. I'd be interested to see other calibers as well. Maybe a smaller rifle calibre like a .223/5.56 with variations in barrel thickness, some bull barrels, and some sporting/hunting barrels and a commonly reloaded round like a .308

If you do more of these (please do), start with a mid-overcharge. If it’s rated at 55k, try 100k before going 180k. It would give a clearer view of gun strength in case of bad ammo. Perhaps even just work your way up until failure, then use the 180 as a detonator. (You load, right?)

I'm definitely interested to see the results of overcharged rounds in other 50BMGs or in other guns, I think it'd be good to have some warning material out there for people who seem to think that their gun will hold any charge, and their reloaded rounds are merely for more manly men.
