Hey Marty, I know how much you love tech, and I just had a thought. Hearing you talk about the modernizations you’d want to do to an EJ207 made me want to tackle similar upgrades on my own car. It got me wondering-could some of the raw footage from episodes where you go deep on these builds be run through AI transcription software? It’d be amazing to turn those conversations into detailed guides or posts. You could take the raw transcript, clean it up with ChatGPT or similar tools, and generate high-quality instructions without having to release the full footage. It’d be like creating the ultimate forum post, and you might already have most of the work done! Just think about all the engines and upgrades you’ve discussed in-depth over the years-there’s so much gold there that could help the community. What do you reckon?

At one point I had over 100 Subaru oil pumps that all had the same issue that all required short block replacement all collected within 3 years time. All 100 pumps had the same issue, the at least 3 of the rear cover bolts are loose which means the gear housing is not sealing and pressure is lost. I've told Subaru this and they refuse to listen, so I advise everyone building one. Remove the new screws and put a dab of blue Loctite on the threads.

Reliability mods are a science and need to be done in specific steps. If these are not done properly things have been proven to happen. 1st mod that is essential a Air Oil Separator but if that is going to be only your mod for now then the most important mod to start with is a upgraded oil pickup and upgraded baffle and pan. IAG makes the best products for these. Your next mod would be having a built engine with forged internals. If you only had these mods and a proper tune the engine would last for 300,000 miles even with hard driving. Subaru factory engines have extra tight piston to cylinder tolerances The pistons are cast hypereutectic aluminum-silicon (Al-Si) alloy; a very common material choice for modern engines. Well proven engines like the 2JZGTE, 4G63, SR20DET, RB26DETT, LSX, K-Series, and others all use Al-Si alloys. However, Al-Si alloys can vary depending on the percentage of silicon in the material. Subaru has opted for a "hypereutectic" alloy which is a high-silicon (12+%) mix. This makes the piston have extremely low thermal expansion, and allows Subaru to run an extremely tight piston-to-bore clearance. The high-silicon content also makes the piston considerably stronger than aluminum itself. For example, a 9% silicon (by wt.) alloy has a 14% higher yield strength than a 7% silicon alloy. This strength comes at a cost: fracturing. This is where a built engine comes into play. IAG makes specific builds rated up to above 1000 horsepower to the wheels depending on which build you order. People want to complain this and that about Subarus but did they follow the reliability steps proven to work with statistics to back or did they skip essential steps and complain something broke. Spend the money and follow the steps. Science R&D and real life statistical data doesn’t lie. Also if you’re cheap and don’t have deep pockets pick a Honda to modify and just go buy a eBay turbo and be one of the “trendy folk”

One thing I have always done with the stock blocks is like you mentioned, AN fittings - Parallel fuel lines, new fuel rails, delete all that OEM garbage. Injectors and run all head and crank case breathers to a catch can. Mine is hidden passenger side low by the gearbox. Then Sump upgrade with pickup and baffling is a must! Heaps of options. Also the rear passenger side Coolant mod for cylinder 4. And the fact you are in Sydney, you should go see PSR for headers, up pipe and I am sure we will see a turbo upgrade. Unsure if you can get them new anymore, but if you stay top mount, the best intercoolers are Wagner Tuning from Germany. If you are in there an oil pump upgrade wouldn't hurt either. Good Luck dude! Love your work guys.

Once got into an argument with a known subaru master mechanic online who said "its not an oil problem, its a detonation problem, and then ringlands go boom" and then just to be an asshole I asked "what are some of the causes of detonation" and they said "heat" and and I said "what are some causes of heat" and they finally said "oil" but didn't realize I just trapped them into agreeing that low oil = high cylinder temps = detonation = failure. And the most COMMON issue with subaru engines are low oil. My 05 STI would eat enough oil that by 2000 miles in, i was a quart or more low on oil. So I started doing my oil changes at 2k miles (drove it like I stole it, daily). And it never blew up because I kept up with fluids. Hell I also had an s2000 and was told that "the rear end is glass, dont drift or launch it" meanwhile I drifted publicly (yeah im that asshole) every day on the way to and from work. Drift the onramp, drift the offramp. Take some back roads in the twisty's and drift there. NEVER ONCE did my rear end go boom. I would even launch it at some redlights to race people. The rear end never broke. WHY? Because every 2-3 oil changes I would swap rear diff oil. All my mechanic friends "that's overkill" yeah? well my rear end never broke! fresh fluid means fluid that works properly. Sure, there was a long period of time via the official database for fluid changes for diff/trans. But I would do mine MORE OFTEN to ensure good life. Hell, the greatest drifter of all time Keiichi Tsuchiya has spoken many times about his personal vehicles and how he does fluids "way too often" to ensure long life. And none of his cars break down typically. I remember the first time I heard him say it, was when he was racing his mini-van (honda odyssey) on is show for fun. And talking to the other people mentioned how often he changes fluids and they called him crazy. But his cars never break....

Yeah I put 500ml more than full on the stick in before that track day, as I’ve always done. You’re right, low oil is a killer!
@DrivingMatterMediaАй бұрын
It is kind of a spiral/circle though. My previous block had the piston rings stuck, causing a lot of blowby, increasing the oil consumption to 1l/1000km right before the rebuild. Stuck rings were again caused by the previous owner not being on top of the oil service intervalls. It didn't start with high consumption but with bad maintenance.
@goblinphreak2132Ай бұрын
@@DrivingMatterMedia 100% bad maintenance is pretty much the killer of most builds. funny how lack of oil caused the rings to go bad and then for you no matter how much you tried to do things proper, you were screwed by the previous owner. but yeah. i find it funny how many subaru people out there are clueless. not ALWAYS the case. but its pretty common. I once met a dude who bragged about his car, but someone else build it and maintained it for him. "Oh this -insert performance shop- does everything for me" nice guy but when his engine goes its going to be his fault for not being an active owner.

I've done several seasons of competitive motorsport with 270awkw on stock RA long block , never a problem with the engine. edit, and full disclosure, I'm not even a Subaru person.

Rod knock isn’t quite blowing up your engine. I’ve blown two engines, one of course a Subaru. Unless you see a cloud of smoke in the rear view mirror and some parts exiting the block consider yourself lucky😂

My V3 STi Type R engine fell apart on the road due to the previous owner not locking down the bolts for the crank, at all in some places. Had to go for a total rebuild with far stronger internals, new/bigger turbo (because why not) and new ecu/remap. It's been great ever since, the remap increased the stock BHP/Torque numbers as the supporting mods were in place. As long as you feed the car the right stuff and don't abuse it, it should last a long time. :)

It'd be a blast to see you chaps swap in a modern Subaru FA24 with a low mounted twin-scroll turbo. Even stock FA24's are proving to hold more power, more reliably, than the EJ series.
@flameninja00Ай бұрын
Problem is that the FA24 is direct injection. You'd need to swap the ENTIRE fuel system, and run a Motec or similarly expensive ECU to run direct injection.
@edwardpeters4700Ай бұрын
@flameninja00 True. That project would definitely require a stand-alone ECU and fuel system. If going that far however, a dual port/direct fuel injection system would be possible (that turned out to be the workaround for high power FA20 builds when they ran out of fueling).
@raynman6466Ай бұрын
If they're going to swap it they should go with an ez30....but if they're going to all that trouble they should just build a bullet proof ej207
@joealex65Ай бұрын
F that!
@flameninja00Ай бұрын
@@edwardpeters4700 you'd need an even more expensive ECU to run both port and direct at the same time lol. Afaik, only Motec, Link, and ECUmasters can run DI, and I'm not sure any of them other than Motec can run both simultaneously. They're buddy buddy with Haltec, so I don't see that happening. Problem isn't fueling for power, it's controlling the fueling.
