Tinman I know I’m late to the party here on this comment. My experience on those old Stihl that have went through multiple heat cycles. The paint / powder coat is fragile to certain chemicals I.E carb cleaner and breakklean it’s like putting paint stripper on it. After exactly the same thing happened to me on a 50 year old 031. I only use either / starter fluid to clean the inside of the case. It does seem to permeate the paint or reduce the molecular adhesion to the magnesium it doesn’t peel after the wash. . I hope this helps. Thanks for sharing your Kraft.

One of the Farmertec kits I got, I think it was the 365/372 kit, had a horrible paint job and it was flaking off everywhere including in the crankcase. Took me a long time to scrape and wire-wheel it all out of there. Glad I did though!

I'm building an 038 right now almost done with it . I blasted the case & painted it with VHT high temp whit . But I sanded the paint out of the crank case. I also did port work & changed the exhaust timing by 7° I aslo took the squish down to .032 to raise the compression. I really have learned a lot from your channel tinman Thank you .

that’s a shame! why would they powdercoat the inside of a crankcase? I don’t see the benefit, a nice polished finish would be just as good, no? I know you’ll do good to that saw again…thanks for the insight! It’s a new one for me, but I agree with your analysis. Always something new to learn! cheers!

Timeline for you guys, first 038 had a 48mm piston with no chain brake and it had points, it was a very modern saw with old technology, then came the chain brake and electric ignition and 50mm piston, called the special, this was probably the most widely used 038, very popular saw, and for a short time they made the hotrod saw called the 038 magnum, it had a 52mm piston and was as modern technology as the 440 and 460 that replaced it, my favorite saws of all time

That powder coat is a weird thing , I had a freshly rebuilt MS260 lock up on its 3rd heat cycle … what a pain , mine was eisier to diagnose as I had a HUGE chunk stuck between the piston and the squish band . Lucky it was idling just outside my shop door , as I herd it start to “RATTLE” like crazy ,but it locked up before I got to it to shut it down . OH well ,them the brakes EH .

If you do bearings in the stihl 038 on the clutch side the seal is pressed in the bearing. So air can leak past the bearing. I would put green loctite or moto seal around the bearing. Take the clutch off see if you smell exhaust there .
@Jason-si4mf Жыл бұрын
I've built (4) Ms660 farmertec kits and I always remove the paint or powder coat or whatever it is from inside the cases. Ive noticed if you hit that coating with any sort of product that contains alcohol or acetone ie carb or brake cleaner it will soften and start flaking off. I'm not sure if the stihl coating is much better... Definitely not something you would want inside your engine. If you are rebuilding a saw or building a kit saw always clean the inside of the case down to bare metal. A thorough cleaning is always needed for the case halves of the farmertec kits as they always have a bunch of aluminum chips sitting in the bearings. I just got one of the new neo-tech 660's (FarmMac) and will most likely tear it completely down and inspect, bevel and smoothen ports and thoroughly clean everything.

@shakdidagalimal Жыл бұрын
Why do they powdercoat the crankcase interior where the oil gas mixture is flowing around ? That seems ignorant. I bet they have other connected parts on the case and it would be an extra step to put a plastic blocker on it to keep the crankcase powdercoat free so they just skip doing that and load her up with paint !
