Hey everyone, the book was donated to a local museum shortly after this video was filmed. They were more than happy to take it in and it’s now safe forever!!! I’ll update you if they put it on display, so you can see it for yourself if you’re in the area! 👍 Im sure the artist would be happy to know that their artwork is in a museum. I’m Sorry if I seemed rough in the video, I was just genuinely excited to share this with you all. I never drew on anything in the book. I saw some concerns for that. So it’s safe, untouched and in the proper place! With that peace of mind I hope you all can still enjoy the video!!

I highly recommend handling this beautiful piece very rarely or handle it with gloves in the future. Paper decays very quickly and our hands no matter how much we wash them have damaging oils on them. Seconding! I have a graduate diploma in museum studies and paper is notorious for being easily damaged. Rae, I would strongly recommend storing this book in a cool, dry place (along with fading from sunlight, mould is the enemy) and handling with cotton gloves in the future, especially over the ink.

@@ryttu3k just curious but is it possible to determine the authenticity of the book Rae bought? Just from the looks alone? If it was from 1913, wont the paper be in a more frail condition due to oils, bad keeping etc? Not to create doubt or anything, Im just curious about your opinion because you mentioned having a graduate diploma
@ryttu3k
@ryttu3k 5 жыл бұрын
@@yume2626 Not just from looking, I'm afraid! I see no reason why it wouldn't be authentic, though. Unless it's from a famous artist and shows extraordinary unseen works, old sketchbooks and other ephemera are fascinating, especially for showing everyday life, but not necessarily super valuable in terms of money.

Manda Kolen THANK YOU AND OMG when she took the stack and went WHACK with them on the desk i near shrieked because i saw a piece fly off. I recently inherited from my grandpa an antique piece of furniture. While cleaning it out i found a piece of paper with a story partially typed onto it. After I pulled it from it's hiding spot between the wooden drawer frames and held it for a moment it DISINTEGRATED IN MY HANDS. I stupidly touched it with my fingers and badly damaged it. I shoved it into a book and I've not touched it since out of fear. Paper is FRAGILE and our grimey human fingers are merciless. LOL

And that printing was only for books and newspapers and for highly official stuff. Typewriter in offices maybe, but that took also long to spread... So everyone had to make sure, that his/her handwriting is well legible for everyone. I don't know how that is in American schools, but in Middle Europe where I grew up, handwriting is still a very important subject in the first years of school (and that means cursive, first with pencil, later with pen). For the first 4 years (age 6 to 10) we weren't allow to change any of the letters in our own style/liking. Personal handwriting had to develop after that. First we had to learn the uniform way. And I am still better remembering stuff I wrote with pen on paper than what I have typed or only read. It is very efficient for learning in every age, I can highly recommend it.

This was fascinating! I’m 68 and that sketchbook is from the time when my grandparents were young adults. I have Grandpa’s dip fountain pen - it’s got a cork grip around the wood stem, and the cork is crumbling now so I don’t handle it at all. I think that’s what your artist would have used to draw his pictures. My Dad was born in 1932, and when he and Mom married in 1952, he was using dipped fountain pens still. I’m not sure when ballpoint pens became popular but I remember using cartridge fountain pens when I was in jr. high and high school. We were able to get different tips for our pens, and you could get very fine tips to broad tips. I don’t remember having markers when I was small - maybe in jr. high school. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That might be something fun to research and share on your channel - the evolution of art supplies. Since you do have some blank pages, I’d like to see you make a modern cityscape - what his street would look like today. And I like your suggestion of only using art supplies that he would have had available to make a drawing. It would be fun to watch you work. Anyway, thanks for sharing that “treasure”. Too bad we only know his drawings, and nothing about him. Maybe one of his descendants will see your video and contact you. Time will tell.

The artist's name is Judith Conry born 1846 and died 1917, Born and died in Grundy Tennessee. She was a political and "creationistic" sketch artist. She began sketching for a therapeutic reason when she was 54 and continued until the year before she died. I hope this helped, found it on a family tree website. (Sorry I forgot to mention, the first name is Rory. Hence the R.J.C, but she went by Judith.)

Good for you. Another historian.... but where did you find it? I can't find her coming up in Ancestry. The one I found born that year was in Ireland... Although she was 600+ miles from Gettysburg, it's clear that Gettysburg played a huge part in her life? Did she have a husband or brother that fought there. The drawings clearly showed she'd seen battle first hand. There was a lot of fighting in Tennessee, though not on the scale of Gettysburg

@@hoodedcrows8966Oh but of course, but it wasn't a smart move. You need to know your niche. He/she could have peddled that book out to art or art history historian fanatics for a pretty penny. Maybe even a local museum would have been glad to have it donated to them. I had no interest in my late uncle Sal's old NES and Atari games (Stadium Events and Air Raid) in particular, and other goodies in his box of old games and accessories he had. That didn't mean I didn't do my research and see what I could get for each one, but that was because I already knew that there were lots of people in a semi- hidden culture that have nothing better to do with their lives than throw lots of money at an old working game cartridge still in it's box and still with it's trimmings that has been lightly used. I have an interest in games myself, but I was certainly not going to be playing them. I was floored when I found out how much money some people are willing to throw at retro games. I made my first bundle as a college kid selling old stuff like that.

Rae, please please please consider donating this to a local archive or museum. I've volunteered in an archive and let me tell you, the hand-drawn art was some of the most important stuff archives keep for the reasons you stated in your video. An archivist would be *thrilled* with this find, especially given the subjects of the drawings--both the commentaries and adult ones. Donating it would allow historians to research this fellow and learn more about American history and heritage, too. I know it's exciting to own something like this for its uniqueness, but I sincerely hope you consider donating it, since its history could go so much further, and it would last for so much longer into the future.

@scrappyscrafty
@scrappyscrafty 5 жыл бұрын
@@MandalaBunnyhome not an art museum, specifically--probably an archive in a university or a state history museum, which maintains a collection far beyond what you see on the floor. The purpose isn't necessarily to display works, but to collect and preserve them as tangible relics of the past. Proof of what people were doing and thinking about, back in the day. An art museum fulfills a different, though similar, purpose, but I agree would not likely be the place for these sketches. Edited to add: when I volunteered at a state history museum, the majority of artifacts were from unnamed people. Like you'd have mittens or letters from someone who wouldn't even belong in a footnote in a history book. But the artifacts still recorded events, thoughts, day-to-day life of normal, average people. A sketchbook like the one in the video would fit in perfectly--it portrays practice methods used at the time (studying stamps), social commentary, sketches of scenes from the artist's life. That's exactly the type of thing a history museum curator or archivist might find significant.

I watched this video and loved it. The artist got the super thin lines in his sketch book with a fine tip dip pen or fountain pen of the era. And if i am correct i think the artist might have either been in art school as you thought or been in training for an advertisement agency. And the one picture labeled turkey hunt. Took place in Russia i think the building in the background with the minarets is an old church from that area. My wife’s dad gave me a sketch book of his fathers from back in around world war 2 (all the pages are blank) and the paper is amazing and hasn’t even yellowed after all these years. But i promised i would use it for my artwork.

I think it might be a misunderstanding. A lot of 'X-rated' hand signs today actually were something completely different in the past. It is especially true since if this is the Conry I have heard of he worked with deaf and mute organizations. I believe the second one confirmed this. A lot of sign language can be misconstrued by people unfamiliar with it. Especially older sign language. Edit: Heck it could have been a Sewing or Knitting demonstration as well. Those were common themes for life drawing for a while for some reason. Maybe because it was a simple and easy scene that didn't actually interfere with most models lives.

Judy Conry is written at the bottom of the drawing of the lady feeding chickens. Artist may be a woman. May be a student. Drawings were probably done with India ink and crow quill pen. Notice how the line is generally thin but the width changes. Old people have beautiful handwriting because as school childrenmanuscript (printing) wasn't taught in the early 1900s. Students were taught cursive (probably Palmer Hand) from the beginning. Palmer Hand was faster to write and easier to read than Spencerian Script that preceded it. You had to have fast, legible handwriting to get a job. Another thought: some of those drawings may be in silverpoint.

This is stunning, I am just starting a little collection on my own of certain old books and magazines, the second oldest I have just now is one for back on 1967 and the pages are just falling apart alone:( I need to be really careful not to damage it more, but these one looks so perfect that you even may think has just a few years, but turns out have passed more than 107 years! How amazing is that!

maybe i'm a bit old fashioned but i personally wouldn't want to see you drawing in this persons sketchbook. Sure you can scan in an image and colour it or try to match his style or something, but drawing in someone elses book just feels a bit too off. Like, it just takes away the value and the fact that it is original and untainted by mothern hands. I feel it would take away the history of it to draw in it

@@MusicLoverMN well just off the top of my head i would say he was a middle aged guy in 1913, around 30-40, middle class judging from his scetchbook, might have been a farmer since he would have a lot of free time to draw and also judging by his pictures( the lambs, the guy with the corn, the animals etc). I think he might have fought in a war since his drawings of wars seem to be from an older time since he has a drawing from the battle of Gettysburg in 1863, so either he drew that from memory, meaning that he was around 70 years old or he drew inspiration from another painting so my theory of him being 30-40 is correct or the time might not have even been 1913 since we only derived that from a drawing..

@@kikokal5810 Since one picture was signed Judy Conry I am betting it was a woman. Possibly Judy Conry from Ireland who came to Boston in 1883 at the age of 20. That would make her 40 at the time. Edit: After watching more I think this is more than one person's drawings. But several I suspect are studies from paintings (ie the battle scene) so they wouldnt have had to have seen the action depicted.

For the love of all that is Holy, DO NOT COLOR THE ORIGINAL PAGES!! Pleeeeease. Even if there are two. Those sketches are special, each in their own right but especially together bc they are excellent examples of the artist’s process. The cover would be leather and the inside binding fabric, as you see. You might consider getting some plastic sleeves to protect the sketches, both from the elements and handling, also. The oils on your skin isn’t great for the paper.

Possibly female artist? Time period and fashion are 1860-1920's. "Social commentary" illustrations look like they are possibly newspaper illustrations for print. Also the image of what you thought appeared to be a setting for Voting was possibly and very likely related to women's suffrage, fighting for the Women's Vote. I nearly fell over dead when you said you wanted to 'color" in this sketchbook. So glad it was handed over to a museum. But I would contact the Women's Art Museum in Washington DC and ask them to review the book.

So, those 'lithograph' sheets are assignments where the subject was already drawn at the top of the page, and there would be a blank space at the bottom for the student to draw that subject out. That's why the subject at the top was so well done and the one at the bottom isn't as perfect. They look like they are copied from a book, as there seem to be page numbers at the top. This portfolio is probably of school work that the artist did. What a great find and thanks for sharing. There is a lot of rich history being presented in those drawings.
