SharpieAndPencil prismacolor is not what it used to be. They break and break as you sharpen them and the colour payoff is not as vibrant as one would expect. Best pencils I have got recently were Lyra. I think I paid about $15 for 24 at Costco and they blew all my other pencils out of the water. Well except for my Laurentiens, but I think I just love those for nostalgia. :) Anyway, try Lyras. I bet you will like them too.

Package is definitely authentic to the time period. We found 2 or 3 left over colored pencils, and that same female picture emblem on a disintegrating bit of packaging, in my gr-grandmother's home as we were packing her up to move her. My gr-grandmother lived to be 104 1/2. The time period that you quote is right, too. According to my gr-grandmother colored pencils because they were so new were an expensive commodity. She said poorer kids couldn't afford, "such a fancy pencil. The rest of us had to make due with bits of lead". In case any of you are wondering, the typical yellow barreled pencils that we are used to today was a much later pencil 'upgrade'. Previously, there was not pencils the way we know them. "Pencils" used to be rods or bits of shaved lead used for writing. The sharpening technique -- very perceptive that you caught on to that. I have vivid memories of even my grandmother (yes, my gr-grandmother's daughter) as late as the 1970's using a knife to sharpen pencils. I remember saying to her, "Grandma, they make pencil sharpener's now. You don't have to do it that way, anymore". It was obviously, a generational and 'fear of modern' machinery mental holdover from the early part of the century. The look of death when I asked her that question was indescribable :| :| :| !!! She explained to me much later that you can, "sharpen a pencil just as well as those old fancy thing's you call sharpeners". I made sure my head was turned when I laughed.
@reaverkai2 жыл бұрын
Except what she said is true and artists still recommend it, one of the reasons being the ability to trim down the wood and leave the lead long to shade quite horizontally
@samalass466 Жыл бұрын
To be fair sharpeners aren't very great. They either give your pencil a super sharp point that breaks after the first few lines or breaks it as you're trying to sharpen. Knives are superior as you have more control and art schools still recommend it.

Lutfor Rahman the difference between printer paper or watercolor paper for me is that the printer paper is just thinner so I would recommend if you are using printer paper then put something under it. Watercolor paper in my area is about $7.

So Tasty Théa you can find tutorials on google. But the simplest way of explaining it would be to cut up printer paper into very small pieces and leave it in water for a day or two. I don't remember exactly how I dried it though. It's been quite a while

So many more people used to sketch and paint in the early 1900’s. I’m 71, and my dad was born in 1910, and my mom in 1915. Of course, they are both deceased. But my dad had a leather case, and my mom had a velvety box, and each of these things had the remnants of art supplies. My dad had a mechanical pencil that he used his whole life, though it did get harder for him to find refills! This was such a fun video!

I am binging your videos so I am a bit late to the party! I have Prismacolor crayons that date back to 1971 which were gifted to my sister when she graduated high school. She never used them but I did!!! When we moved from the house where we grew up, I found the box of 125 prismacolors along with Eagle brand crayons. I love the Prismas as they are more waxy and still brighter than the ones sold today. The Eagle brands, in comparison are dull but after 51 years not being used I would be a bit dull too!! LOL!! Nevertheless, maybe in another 50 years when they will be 100 years old, the Prismas will be dull too.....don't know as I am sure I wont be around in another 50 years. BTW I remember my dad using his penknife to sharpen his carpenter s pencil....even tho we did have a sharpener!!

Sneaky Snek I put newspaper into a bucket of water, I mixed it around until the ink of the newspaper was gone and then I put it out of the bucket and pressed the water out. I didn't use it to draw or paint, so you'll probably have to press it somehow while it's drying (because you want it to be flat yk). Since it's long ago when I did it the last time, I don't know if it was greyish or not. But yeah it had kinda the same structure and thickness as a watercolour-paper.

Although sharpening a pencil with a sharpener is the best modern way, by sharpening a pencil with a blade would help the lead not snap! I’m not suggesting you do so as you are not really qualified or able to do so however please maybe consider giving them to a art museum where others can see them. Sorry ! I still love you I just wished you would take more care with 100 year old art products...

No offense but not everything old belongs in a museum. Someone sold these which means they aren’t valuable. Plus if the museum wanted old art supplies they can go on eBay themselves it’s not that hard. Also there are thousands of old colored pencils out there. edit: jesus didn't know you were gonna reply but I wasn't trying to be mean, I just wanted to say that not all old things belong in museums. Also if it was valued by the owner why would they sell it? They are just old coloring pencils. I didn't know you were so sensitive and quick to respond until you did lmao I'm just stating my opinion.
@alexdenny13945 жыл бұрын
Tiffany Zhu there may be thousands however it’s not hard to show things respect. No offence but people need to start using their brains, just because something is easy to find doesn’t mean it isn’t valuable, if not to society then they probably were valued to their owner. I think things are getting to affordable to the point they lose their worth. Plus I wasn’t hating I was just stating my opinion jeez the internet is so sensitive!!!

Love your find. I remember when I first learned to color. My first encounter with crayola was a find from the junk yard with my dad and he taught me how to color properly and in the lines. Those crayola crayons were the best smooth, pigment loaded ever made. Way above what you get these days from crayola. Your placement of your fine colored pencils reminded me of the crayola back in the day. I also look for supplies from years gone by and have quite a collection of instruments for paint, ink and graphite using them all at least once depending on age and durability. Thanks for sharing.
