Escape to Everdeen: Farmhouse life, Château style

Жыл бұрын

Welcome to my new channel! I did something a little crazy and bought a 223 year old farm house in the heart of the French Countryside in the beautiful Auvergne region. I bought this abandoned home complete with everything that was inside it - antique furniture, chandeliers, hidden treasures, literally everything - including some historic surprises left by the former owners.
In this video I'm taking you on a full home tour of this gorgeous regency era home with its historic architecture. I'm so excited to start my chateau lifestyle journey and get to work on the DIY renovations and restorations.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi I'm Cara, I'm a professional circus acrobat.
I always dreamt of having a beautiful home where I could practice my art and I found it at Everdeen house a historic 200 year old farmhouse in the center of France come join me as I renovate this gorgeous property, preparing it as a future Circus training venue and restoring its unique character.
My friends and family will join me along the way as I find new skills, uncover hidden treasures and make the Escape to Everdeen.

I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel. What a fantastic home you have, all full of treasures! I have enjoyed your video very much. I don't know if anyone has already mentioned it in the comments, but the metal, satin-lined candy box you showed is a jewelry casket. My mother had one very similar. I think hers was from the 1950s, but they had been popular for many decades before that. Nobody knows what they are now, but you keep your rings and other trinkets in them.

WOW! I stumbled on your channel after watching the favs, the Pethericks, Doing it Ourselves, and Ryan's channel, and all of the extending family in France. One thing I am hoping, you will open up those rooms and knocking down a few walls. With that many stairs and chopped up narrow areas, it's a bit claustrophobic and closed in. The upper floors where your bedroom is, it is very very nice! I love the countryside look about it! I can't wait to see you what you will be doing with it and how to go about it! It's going to be exciting!

My thought was exactly when I saw the large fireplace. Might want to consider opening it up to the main house and making it a kitchen again. Would possibly be a good space for a downstairs bathroom somewhere in the rear area. In any case great purchase!

I just found you and am interested to see your journey. One bit of advice: do not get rid of or sell anything until you find a reliable appraiser. For instance, that carved horn could be extremely valuable. Not only is it an exquisite piece of art, but since ivory can no longer be obtained legally, there are only so many pieces extant.

It's gorgeous! Congrats I have some experience remodeling old homes. I always test paint for lead before sanding, scraping, or cutting through it to avoid disturbing it. There's lots of great info online regarding lead paint. The biggest lead hazards in homes are from painted window sashes and doors.

Ooooooo, watching the whole thing now, in my opinion I’d do the apartment 1st so you can stay there while you do the rest of the house, trust me, trying to stay in the house while your renovating is a NIGHTMARE which I have been living for 3 years & only half finished (Hubby is a bricklayer & plasterer) 🤦‍♀️, hire some good trades people as the entrance door frame & lintel will need replacing, it looks like it won’t open due to the crack in the upright allowing the lintel to sag so I’d replace with a metal lintel instead of wood. I’m in love with the treasures you’ve found so far 💖 Michelle

I did not expect the big new to be *THAT* crazy. I thought that maybe (1) you would host an aerial retreat somewhere in the south of France (2) You bought a house for yourself in the countryside (with some better place to practice your aerial). But I had not thought of a combination of those two ! I hope-hope-hope that some of the retreats would take place during (french school) holidays as there is no other option for me to be outside of my job !

It is actually good that you have this type of stove (with the gaz bottle)! It means that you still have access to a stove even when you will be doing major eletrical work and also these stoves can be moved around the house. My in laws borrowed one like this during their big renovation ! What are you afraid of ? There are very reliable. The only thing is that the flexible tube (the link between the stove and the bottle) needs to be changed when it is old :) (there is a expiration date written on it).

Ah good to know about the hose! I'm just paranoid about gas leaking...
@cecilemagnier7113
@cecilemagnier7113 Жыл бұрын
@@EscapetoEverdeen A special smell is added to the gas so that you do smell a gas leak very quickly. This type of stove is very common (wherever there is no "gaz de ville") and I have never heard of an accident. And I am paranoid of many things. The only thing that is a bit sketchy is that you need to make sure the flame is still there. Like if you put too much water to boil and the water goes overboard and the flame is put down (and the gas is still open) then that is dangerous. So you can't have it on for hours without anyone having a look at it from time to time. But we have crockpots for this purpose so no worries :D

Just get it checked over by a professional, including the hose . I used to renovate houses with my exhusband . We did the labouring and had professionals do what we couldn't do . I wouldn't rush to knock down walls in a house of that antiquity, though I did in my houses , victorian houses often have tiny rooms. K

You did well to get this home with its furnishings. To be able to have those beautiful pieces of furniture already, and to sell everything you don't particularly fancy is ideal. Even the scythes can go to a metal market and earn you funds if that helps. Do you think you will keep the separate units or join the house back into one place as I presume it must have been. Just curious. Best wishes from Australia.

Your sewing machines seem to have been made in the first quarter of the 20th century. Possibly into the 30's or even 40's. If they don't work initially, try having them professionally cleaned and oiled. And, yes, there is such a thing as sewing machine oil - much finer than WD-40. They are absolute TREASURES, especially the one that is a pedal powered. Keep them if you have any interest in sewing - you'll be amazed at the quality of them! If you're not into sewing, do a little research into how much they sell for in your area - they're worth A LOT of money. Good luck in your adventure!

You mention at 13:30 & earlier that some rooms are too dark for the video to work. That’s probably because you are pointing the camera to to light coming through the window. To solve this you should move to the window & face camera away from the window. The improvement should be vast!

Cordialement

Do not cover the old walls with wallpaper! Make it as it should be and paint the walls with TRADITONAL paint that suits the wall. That wood be absolutly gorgeous. It is a farmhouse not a townhouse. Think clearblue (kleinblue) but lighter on these walls !! Also traditional textiles both french prints and linen…

I think that your downstairs apartment would have been for a servant . The farmer was a gentleman farmer quite well off . Thd first room was perhaps where food was cooked when the house was built, though I didn't see a means of getting it upstairs hot ! Other than the stairs. Is there a cupboard with pulleys inside perhaps. ? The chain could be for a victorian light . Or if could even have been where the meat was hung over the fire , when the house was built . The photographs may be older than 1900 , I have some photos of my family from about mid 19th century onwards . An earlier French war than the 1st World.war . K

On a second viewing the bedroom in the servants apartment is thirties style, wardrobes etc . The bedcover is art deco , could be quite valuable. The second photo with two soldiers was taken in x studio I think , the small table being a photographer's prop. If English it could have been the Boer war they fought in , but I'm not sure the French were involved in that. Its a very interesting room , unusual to find art deco textiles. Be very careful with that bedspread it will be quite fragile. There certainly are some fireirons in the chimney. Those pots were hung on a chain over the fire . See the bend up in the handle. Perhaps in the 19th century the farmer and workers went into that room to eat at midday having had a good meal provided by the servant.
