In today's video we check out my new Skoda Octavia VRS I bought cheap-ish from Copart UK. There's a reason it was cheap though! Do it keep it or sell it on?

Hi Dean, I'm a private hire cabbie and I'm on my 4th Octavia, sold the others with under 200k and never got more than £1500 for any of them. All of them had full service history with no holes and looked after. Think a quick wash and brush up and get rid mate. Mick

so true thought was going say £300/500 from copart !

@@adrianthorpe8005 all the people that have bought my old taxis have got bargains. I still see my first Octavia running around and I sold it in 2008 with 190k so god knows what it's done now. The thing is, it was washed every 4 days, waxed once a month, serviced every 10k, ( 10 weeks ) and wanted for nothing. The one that Dean has bought is a dog ( no offence ) because it's not the drivers car they dont give a s%%t. Wash and brush up, it will make money because it's a VRS but dont spend money on it. Ps, I am a part time car trader as well.

Not all ambulance vehicles are NHS. There are a lot of private ambulance companies out there. I work for NHS ambulance service and all our vehicles are maintained regardless of cost. Those tyres give it away, we only fit branded tyres, usually OE . The fact its 10nyears old gives it away as well. All our vehicles are changed every 4-5 years. Be very surprised if it was an ex NHS vehicle.
@bigjml4 жыл бұрын
That isn't an ex NHS vehicle. It was M+L Ambulance who became UKSAS and then SSG (a Spanish Co I believe that secures loans against all assets then closes down) They went bankrupt last year with all their assets sold. I never drove that actual one but did use one of their other VRs Skodas. I think that one was in the workshop undergoing maintenance and was sold as a non runner. The NHS never fits budget tyres. Scarely these were used to answer 999 calls in East of England and down in Reading. Its a quick flip for me. Get it legal and safe then sell, as the type of neglect that vehicle (and the rest of their fleet) has suffered mean it will never be a straight vehicle.

I would have said sort the easy/cheap wins, get an MOT and sell but the windscreen is a significant and unavoidable cost. Thing is, those Skoda estates do have a bit of a following and the VRS badge doesn't hurt. The miles aren't so much of a problem for a diesel. Fix the roof, front bumper, turbo actuator (or pipe leak) and make it presentable and review your situation. What else have you got needing your input ?

The OSR definitely looked warped when you span it. Personally if I’d bought that I’d clean it up the best I could for as little money as possible, things like remove the tints and give it a wash. It would then go on eBay listing the most obvious issues but inviting inspection pre bidding as you’re putting the onus on the bidder. You’ll clear way more than £1500, seen octavia taxi’s with 400k on sell for more than that so you’ll definitely earn a drink from it. Fixing it would cost at least £1000 (wheel refurb, roof repair & paint, changing worn/ replacing missing parts etc. Some of the bits you need like the missing interior light surround might be on the breaker MK5 you’ve got, I’d even check that for bump stops, mats etc. As the saying goes, you can’t polish a turd 😂
@SavingSalvage4 жыл бұрын
yeah pretty much spot on
@DanLeeds104 жыл бұрын
Saving Salvage if you eBay auction it the onus is generally on the buyer once the major stuff has been listed. Wondering if the bonnet handle and trim on that MK5 is the same, most bits are interchangeable so it’s a cheap fix for content but don’t adjust your standards for content. A quick punt video is equally interesting, just done and dusted in one episode.

Clean the injectors, put new glow plugs in as well as new engine- and gearboxoil and see if the engine light dissapears. A dashboard without any warninglights is a good dashboard, gives confidence. Give it a good clean, especially the inside, and sell it with a new MOT. Done on a budget. The rest, as in welding and painting, replacing parts as doorguard and bumper is expensive, so I wouldn't do that.
@newblackdog78272 жыл бұрын
I’d sort any major mechanical issue/s. A few interior bits; new door card, replace broken switches. I’d just use a painted bung for the roof. Maybe new screen. A decent valet, MoT & call it quits. Look to make £500 profit

First of all, the tyres, if it was an NHS Car it would have had premium tyres on it, my brother is a rapid response paramedic and all the car generally have Michelin, even the vans get decent tyres. I’d imagine they’ve prob sent to auction needing new tyres, someone has maybe picked it up prior to you and started with it and decided not worth the bother. Secondly, used to drive these Octavia’s as a taxi driver, granted not the VRS but majority of mines where 2.0 140’s, last one I sold was on 360k, all the wee problems you’ve mentioned, drivers door card, air filter box, shocker covers etc etc are all common problems with a car around that mileage. I ran that shape of Facelift Octavia from when they where launched in 2009 till my last one on a 62 plate, that being on 360k, was only sold as it had to come off the road due to license restrictions.... I sold that for £1500 I’d keep it, tidy it up, tons of parts available, eBay, Facebook market place or even Briskoda.net Would make a great daily with some love

I have the same engine on my A3. i had to replace the turbo actuator as it gave an underboost fault, DPF clogged up and had to be cleaned, and the CAYC engines are notorious for injectors failures. If your injectors end with a B letter, they are the old type and tend to fail, if they end with an S, it is an updated injector type and should be OK !
@driveguy4 жыл бұрын

my heart says save it but if you put it right I doubt whether you could draw 3000 quid for it. No history, high mileage and heavy use. I would: remove tints, scrub from top to bottom. Cosmetically tidy roof and rail holes and fit rubber bungs to seal them up (thats what. Ex police used to do), sell as spares or repair listing main faults. Option B would be do minimum to put MOT on it and sell as potential minicab. Pity as they’re a sound car normally. My León TDI mk1 (same platform, one generation older) does "check engine" + "glow plug" combined as a signal. It's even in the instructions - check engine on + glow plug flashing = problem detected, both permanently on = error stored in the computer, that goes away after a while. And in these TDIs it's basically always the turbo. I've upgraded mine after ~140kkm, but the flashing glow plug came back when a hose from the intercooler to the engine came loose. To me, those lights are normal, that means the car works and you just need to fix one thing (in the case of the hose, we've secured it with a self-tapper because the boost was too high and normal hose clamp couldn't cope with it, hehe).

This is a Private Ambulance vehicle. NHS vehicles are never fitted with non OE parts. And that includes brake pads or DPFs. They are never ever fitted with budget tyres either. Abused? Yes. Bodged? No. The reason they drilled the roof rails and cut a hole in the roof is because M+L used to fit their vehicles out themselves. Rather than using a proper conversion company.

Fix it I had a 2009 vrs had the same fault it was just a new boost pressure sensor, the air con pump always fails on that model but you try to tighten up the center screw in on the pump by removing wheel and inside cover I did and aircon started working again. Bearings can also go a common fault even on the mk3

What is the most shocking thing is that considering this is maintained to save lives, the quality of the tyre brands! I have an old adage when I buy a car that you can tell everything you need to know about how well it was maintained by looking at a cars tyres and brakes. If an owner is prepared to skimp on that then there is no hope for the rest of the car.

Get rid. The engine light will most likely be from egr which is major job to replace.

Part way through this before anyone asks. Can buy a book pack for not much and print all Mot's off. Assume Essex NHS Trust, bet you can get emailed history printout and had 3 cambelt changes. Worth saving. Might be some service history via the Skoda app too. If alternator, starter motor, turbo and camshaft alright you've a decent one. I've seen worse via ex Police trader websites.

Show how to smarten it up on a budget - 1 video for the channel then sell it on. Spares are cheap for these.... Door card is easy.. Mechanical work hopefully isn't too major once you have gone over it and replaced the missing bits/plugs. Paintwork too much for the return... Rubber Bung in the roof ex police car style. New roof rail or even a roof rack. Remove the crap tints and a damn good valet in and out at the nearest hand car wash will transform it. Then sell on and see how much profit you get after.... Someone will snap it up as a workhorse. I had one and it was a great car. Edit: You can't buy a cheap van anywhere at the moment. I bet you a parcel delivery person on the run up to Christmas will buy it and use to deliver for amazon etc. Unsure about 3k but I reckon you will make a reasonable amount of money.

The boost issue Iv came across on this vag group engine comes in at higher gears higher speeds. Say in 6th accelerate 70-80 off power back on power then limp mode hits

It’s the same 2.0 TDI engine in my A3 had the turbo activate fault Lowe boast fault the glow plug light stayed on caused limp mode . In fact Your channel gave me tips on how to trace and replace it 👍

I have a 08 Blue Octavia VRS, spent so much money on it engine wise, still not got to the bottom of numerous issues, extremely unreliable in my experience but still can’t part with it because I’ve put so much time and work into it!

£700-800 no more......it is rough. When you tally up the repair and your labour costs you will probably be out of pocket. Get rid asap

Personally I'd like to see it restored. Obviously you've got very little chance of making money on it but think it will be a great project for the Chanel.

My mind says it has lived and is ready for the end. My heart tries half-heartedly to say look for cheap parts for one or two weeks. Look at the total, if less than £250~300 give it a go. Otherwise, do the least possible, wash and clean, grommet in the roof, etc. then punt it on for as much as possible. There is content potential for a minimum cost fix video, but with 190,000 miles, it is no moneymaker.
