Living in this thing is not exactly roughing it, it’s nicer then most brick and mortar homes. Sure it has its limitations but think of it this way way, if you don’t like your neighbors then you can just move along. I value your effort here keep it up!

as being a former copart yard employee many years ago, stuff gets mislabeled all the time. Some kid probably marked the box ''flood damaged'' instead of ''theft recovery''. Sure looks like that is what this unit was, a theft recovery. I could tell you plenty of stories like a BMW that came in that owner couldn't afford so he torched it himself but left a pipe bomb under the exhaust pipe for me to find. Or the theft recovery that came in with 50 stolen car radios in the trunk and burglar tools. Both of these cars came to us directly from City Police impound. I called them and asked if you idiots ever really inventory these cars....

I disagree. I think the community at the RV park were invited either explicitly or implicitly to help themselves to whatever they needed to patch up their homes while this one was waiting to be collected by the insurance company. It may be technically theft but I can understand the mentality of "it's getting written off for scrap anyway".
@Tomtuga

back when we did intakes of vehicles, it was a paper form that you check marked off. It wasn't anything from the insurance company stating what the issue of the vehicle was. We get a ''story'' from where it was picked up or from the guy hauling it in. So the person checking it in saw that nothing worked on the camper. They had no clue as to where or what these electrical components are. Minimum wage - bottom of the hires. They are rushing to get this pain-in-the-butt unit in. Looking at it there was no obvious damages but nothing works...flood damage sounds good, mark that box and move on to the next vehicle. Stop overthinking it.

I have also heard that if IF the water touches the axels then most insurance companies will total them out due to having to rebuild the axel barrings breaks ets .. just a thought .

The cost of redoing trailer brakes and axles doesn't even come CLOSE to the FMV of a 41' fifth wheel. Trailer axles have just simple spindles with tapered roller bearings. Super easy to service even if they sat in standing water for MONTHS. The brakes are simple electric drums (though heavier units sometimes have electric over hydraulic).

I think you got a great deal. Need to be careful around the positive terminal of a lead acid battery, though. That's got enough power in it to melt that wrench.

I know your pain. I accidentally hooked the ground to the positive side of my coach's electrical system when I installed a pair of new deep cycle batteries and did not catch my error until it had melted just about every pair of wires from range hood to propane gas sensor. I did this two weeks before the big trip to Virginia's coast. The RV is a self driving model built on a Ford truck frame and I was lucky I did not fry the separate system that ran the vehicle. In ten days I had pulled every thing out from fridge to heater and rewired everything and like you no part of the RV was a mystery to me after that repair. Nice Job on your part!

Rebuilder Guy: You have a great channel and interesting content. Keep it up! The insurance company likely settled with the original owner and the owners legal representative. To benefit both parties and to come to an agreement the insurance adjuster claimed "Water and flood damage." The insurance company could have been the owner's insurance or it was stored in a lot and the lot owners insurance covered it. Wild guess is wherever it was parked was flooded and the camper sunk to frame on the soft ground (not damaging above frame). Maybe that explains the odd jack situation as they would have sunk too, bent or ripped off during tow truck recovery; then removed for transportation. Look at braking mechanism and you might find dried mud or mud behind rims. Either way, it is obviously not what most people consider flood damaged.

i had to remove my fridge due to its inablitty to be properly sealed from the cabin, the CO senser and propane panic was always chirping, im in the process of tracking down a 12volt marine unite with side by side freezer, u can also go residential with a solar panel to top up your batteries and run it direct from a independant inverter. take care and great work on the rebuild. your viedos actually go indepth to what it is actually requierd to work on these pain in the arse units we come to love and live in

HI dude. I think you have been doing amazing stuff with your new toy. HOWEVER 1 thing. I am a 45 year marine mechanic. The battery you put in your rv system is a marine DEEP CYCLE battery. This battery will kill your systems over time. Marine deep cycle batteries never fill 100 percent. This means your converter and charger system will never get a break or shut down to cool off. I cannot tell you how many engines and systems I have had to repair on customers' boats. I know this is an old video now but hoping this message gets across to others reading this and maybe you in case you had overheat issues and shorted out systems attached to that battery. I have an Optimax 150 on my fish and ski boat and supposedly the new cranking batteries that are deep cycle have addressed this issue. NOT..... I bought this engine from SeaRay, who should have known better but still had a mechanic using deep cycle batteries for starting. Optimax (DFI engines) Have a big warning sign right on the block and control systems. DO NOT USE DEEP CYCLE CRANKING BATTERIES ON THIS ENGINE.... Anyway.. I got the engine cheap because that battery killed the charge circuits and rectifier/regulator. So anyway ... great thing you did there. Getting one from the thieves myself in 4 days I hope. Let us know if you are still in the camper on new home...

the trailer looks fantastic and I wish you luck. if you are going to put up a roof over the rv why don't you add a small deck to the door that way your not directly on the ground and your not tracking dirt an mud into the rv. just an idea

At the end of the day it was what you wanted. You know the RV like the back of your hand and you've fixed (almost) all of the problems. It is fit for purpose and you don't need to worry about the dubious history. Bruggs has an insight into how Copart rolls so I agree with him that it could well be mislabelled or somebody was just rushing it through and marked it as "flood damaged" regardless of the actual condition. From what I've seen on this video, I'd be inclined to agree that the missing modules were taken by knowledgeable thieves who knew exactly what they were after but didn't know exactly where to look. Fix it, enjoy it and save a few bucks in the process. It makes for great content on your channel.

I let a moron hook up his battery to mine for a jump and he blew it up in my face... luckily I was wearing glasses and there was a snowbank to stick my face in handy... and a cop to stop me from beating him to death... always hook your ground up first so you only weld stuff... I had a bank of 6 batteries on an inverter in my handicap ramped coach van wired in parallel... 12 volts but a few thousand amps... it could weld 2 gauge wire to the ramp frame and stop your heart... from fright lmao!

Nice follow up. Glad you are not the type that sits infront of the camera droning on about what you do. So many do when they can easily drone on while showing what they do. I ould suggest building a deck off the rv one step below the door. Have seen that and make it so you can also take the rv out on trips. If you are in a sun state the rv port will help in the hot weather.

Knowing how insurance works, it was probably at an RV service place and stuff was removed to check functionality to see what was really wrong. Or the insurance company had them removed to make it unusable. Seeing as how the battery was damaged I would say there is more to this trailers story than what is said about it. Between the battery and bent arm, I would say this was in a bad storm along the ocean and the wind lifted it and slammed it back down along with salt spray soaking all the electronics.

Were I a betting man I'd say this was a theft recovery and Copart just ticked the wrong box when they checked it in for sale. Fifth wheels sit for months on end in storage yards and the owners may only come by to pick up the trailer once or twice a year. The lot security isn't familiar with any of their owners and always have that CYA clause in their contract that they're not responsible for theft. Thieves probably gained access to the storage yard, saw that this trailer didn't have a coupler lock OR wheel lock and drove it off to strip for the valuable modules. By the time it was recovered the original owner had likely taken their check from the insurance and bought another fifth wheel.
@nrgate
@nrgate 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe owner was tired of it, wasn't using it, too damn big, RV parks turning it away as sites too small, what ever. SO flood hits his area and calls his insurance company. They tell him to take it to dealer for inspection, gets out garden hose and splashes some water in the basement. Off to the dealer. Dealer calls adjuster, sends pics verifies water damage. Adjuster calls time of death, pays out the owner and tells dealer a transport will be by to take trailer to salvage auction. Most RV dealerships are crooks, and most dealerships have a parts department. Guess what? They have the price list of said parts department, and it's going to salvage auction. Strip and rip baby, transport takes it auction. House batteries must be dead, nothing 12V coming on and no place to plug in shore power. You see it, check it out looks exceptionally clean, roll the dice and win. So those high dollar modules you had missing won't be sold over the counter to a do it yourself guy. They will be in the parts bin but only for the ones coming into the service department. yep

I have been purchasing RV's - Semi Trucks well almost anything I felt I could make money off for over 35 years now. Why so many questions from viewers what the point from behind a keyboard other than their trying to feel important. Your bid was a bit high but it happens and you made out in my opinion good. I would sure like to have a few employees like you your really nice all around tech that's isn't afraid of work and trouble shooting. Who ever took the parts knew exacting what they were doing they really didn't damage much at all. Which has me wondering if they stole the expensive parts to so your fifth wheel would be totaled and than planned on bidding on it and having the parts to repair it. I have seen this with many things that are totaled by insurance companies. It doesn't matter if it was flood damaged other than to scare others away from bidding. You most likely offered more money than the ones that stole the parts. But who cares and you or us will never know. Like you said with nothing working - insurance companies don't have the time or man power to go over every RV from a storm so they look at maybe 10 out of a 100 RV's and total them just as an example. You have a really nice RV now. And if you could get the title cleaned up or a new title - it can be done you would make some good money.but the longer you use it the more you save as you know compared to renting. The RV I recently purchased is a $165,000 DRV Mobile Suites 44 foot fifth wheel. I paid $43,000 which was considered flood damaged but the water never got past the axles and everything worked like new. It wasn't even a year old. I watched with interest your first video and I really am impressed with everything you have done. So I subbed, Thanks and I love to watch you work you remind me of myself but I am 68 now. I wish you and your family the best, Cheers

I am liking your content! Was it you that did a burned Subaru motor swap? I am thinking it was the same into music that people were curious about. A diesel pusher is high-end! Can you please give us the skinny on the fee's, how vehicles besides your boat are turned over to you? I'd heard many folks say that forklift damage happens to the jacking rail of cars & trucks. Is there any way out-of-the-box you know if you need a broker & what is the range of their fees? I wouldn't mind seeing some of the BIG household goods mover sleepers that are like a small apartment. I almost took a job, but when I found out that all of the crew "Fingerprints" the load I ain't built for that! If I was DOT Foods $60K starting salary is a winner, but I have been in a lot of pain from jobs where safety was very lax and riding with too many stupid drivers and breaking of bones and loss of cartilage. I've been buried up to my chest as a ditch for sewer pipe collapsed no trenching shield was a must in the 80s. Another time I had to fetch a pump head out of a holding pond. I was stuck in the mud for 3+ hours and I was able to yell to a woman parked on the back row of Montgomery Community College in Germantown, MD. I almost got buried again there. I drove 18 wheelers for a couple big outfits & when I called the Safety Officer I was told, "A lot of BAD things happen to truck drivers!" Driver Relations told me when I told of my dispatcher trying to get me to run more than the DOT allowed they're just trying to put money in your pocket! You'll be sorry when we get robots to be driving! That's been 12 years ago! I am going to Chattanooga with my friend Eric Zimmerman, an international Autism Advocacy Awareness speaker and I go to a lot of his events by car. If you want to hear him, he's easily found.

@@RebuilderGuy Thanks! I'll look it up. I am midway between downtown Baltimore & the counties, so what CoPart calls the Baltimore facility is just up the street from friends and family in Finksburg, Maryland. (It's an obscure bit of trivia, many women the world over go to that town for Little Vinnie's Tattoo artist & namesake does what surgeon's have limited abilities to realistically recreate the aereola that restores the confidence/selfworth to those who had a mastectomy surgery. They call it getting my Vinnie. My Mom lost her battle with the same type of cancer and it's cool that I think that he helped his sister and word spread.) So that CoPart office used to be Vogt's Junkyard, but they were way out ahead of the curve by dismantling & inventory & store in a warehouse with barcodes for inventory in the early 80s. Family tragedy made it available with car haulers in & out around the clock. My flipping buddy found us a rarity and I had to fight I-95 as a super cell thunder shower was passing through the area making traffic Hell! At least the West Coast cities have "Ramp Metering" and parallel local feeder lanes to mostly moving 40 MPH the bulk of rush hour. It's a long neglected Fairlady sold after more tragedy, but it's a clapper! We're trying to sort out our tow unit too! I used to pull hotshot RV's from the Promised Land of this class of vehicles for RAD Transport of Elkhart, Indiana. There were always CRAZY stories to tell hauling these products. It's amazing the patchwork of state's with reciprocal laws of "Over Dimensional Freight" and those who don't. Especially when lawmakers were able to torture, "The Commerce Clause" intended to not restrict the movement of very controversial freight from being moved through state's that would mostly be regulated by each sovereign State. Thus, compelling the Supreme Court to make it apply the law broadly to compel the Federal Government forcing US citizens to have a certain type of Healthcare as mandated via Obamacare. This decision seems to nullify the reason for the Civil War, _ State's Rights. Thankfully we are currently allowed to work on the vehicle(s) of our choice. "Praise God & pass the ammunition!" While it's currently still available.

Copart usually takes tons of pictures that they post in the auction listing. They also encourage you to inspect or hire an independent inspector to look at items prior to bidding. It is buyer beware....if you don't look at an item or have a knowledgeable person look at it before you bid...you have no reasonable basis to gripe. I would have recorded a walk around inspection there were all kinds of big red flags right in front of the camera lense. He thought he was getting an whale of a deal because he made a bunch of assumptions.

He did get a good deal Ive seen million dollar rvs that didn't have as nice cabinetry and flooring... It wouldn't have been that good of deal if he had paid to have electric work... you simply have to eat your labor instead of throwing out cash... it works out financially if you have someone do the work get rough estimates before you buy if possible cuz getting electrocuted is expensive... they earn that money...

It might be considered flood as nothing worked. They wouldn't check it that close and just see that things didn't work. Insurance companies are not always the smartest. It had been stripped before the insurance saw it. Maybe?
