Yeah, Same as Mr. Fjelldal said. Many schools get rid of older hardware. I used to buy and repair school disposal computers. Most of the time there is nothing wrong with them, other than the hard drive being removed for confidentiality reasons. Sometimes, they might even have the hard drive which is completely wiped clean with utilities that fill it with zeroes like KillDisk.

@Gossip Heart When I was in college, I had to take out student loans, I also worked for the school, and my parents helped me pay my way through (tuition, housing , bills etc). I graduated about 6 years ago, I've been over paying on my student loans since (sometimes by a $1000 over the monthly minimum) and I still owe $10,000. I have a Bachelors Degree. My sister OTOH continued to grad school, and I remember the day she told me her student loans passed her mortgage. Schooling is stupid expensive here in the US.

I used to refurb these Macs for people with new batteries, upgraded RAM, an SSD and a good clean-out. Still usable for basic productivity - typing essays for school/university, using the internet, etc. It helped get a few more years of useful work out of them and was a lot cheaper than buying a new one.

These MacBooks are great. They are, unlike newer ones, upgradeable. Putting in 2Tb SSDs would be smart for anyone who buys these. And swapping out the memory for 8Gb or 16Gb from OWC would make them fly again. 2012 was last year you could upgrade memory yourself. The 2012's also support Catalina!!

I'm still using a 13" MBP mid-2010 with Core 2 Duo. Last year I upgraded ram to 16GB and put in new battery and 500GB SSD. My wife has the early 2011 13" MBP upgraded with 500GB SSD and 8GB of ram. I replaced the trackpad on hers recently as it had become glitchy. We've both had these for close to a decade and will keep on using them every day probably for several more years. Easy to get into and work on. Lots of ports. Stuck on High Sierra though.

Fascinating to watch you work. For me I was very impressed. Had to take apart my HP ENVY due to possible loose hard drive cable and was terrified to do so. Once in there after waiting a WEEK for the right size screw driver and pry things to arrive because Prime truck went off the highway in wind storm on ice causing order delay. Yes it was just a loose cable even though it did not appear loose it must have been because after gently pushing on it both ends putting all those impossibly tiny screws back the machine booted up. I used to take the old boxes apart adding and subtracting things . Not so much the lap tops.

I have the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, exact same design. These are very resilient machines, and extremely reliable on average EXCEPT their SATA cables, which have a high failure rate after 5 or so years. 15 dollar replacement part will get you rolling again. I believe some have graphics issues, my model doesn't suffer from it. Physically they are extremely durable too. I had an outdoor speaker fall on mine from 2-3 feet above, across the screen and onto the keyboard. There were 2 white streaks on the screen I thought were scratches, but the screen had scratched the speaker and it cleaned right up. Nothing else is wrong except a tiny dent in the casing. Even the HDD (Which was replaced later by SSD) is ok.

Surprisingly enough, this was a very satisfying video to watch. Just upgraded this week my 2012 anti-glare boot camp partition from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Very painful and time consuming..like it was 1995 all over again plug and no play but thank God I managed to make it all work on a all specked out with 1 TB SSD and 16 GB ram. Runs like butter! I’m a happy camper this bad boy better last me at least another 5 years. They don’t make laptops like these anymore.

@@Mr._Lord_Byron If you have a Best Buy you could take advantage of their Christmas sales. I have bought 3 MacBooks since 2008 from them. At x-mas the computers go down $100.00 usually and you can pay monthly with no interest for 18 months. Just make sure to pay it off to avoid interest. I have never paid interest yet.

I tried installing Dashlane, and got paranoid because of the passwords it was demanding of me. I can do quite well without it.

I still use a MBP 2010 (7,1) as my daily driver and I really don't have that many issues with it. One of the USB ports is dead and it really chugs when playing video files, but other than needing a RAM upgrade, it's still a completely usable machine. These machines have a weird quirk that they will recognize 16GB of RAM (2x8GB) as long as it's the right 1067mhz or possibly 1333mhz DDR3 SO-DIMMs or have been declocked to 1067mhz.
