This is ideal if you go to a yard sale and need a quick way to check if a game works

But it is also a Famiclone, and some games won't work regardless. It isn't fully reliable for that reason. So you could pass on a perfectly good game thinking it doesn't work, and really it is cus you used a famiclone.

I remember back around 2009 I ordered a handheld NES for like $60. I think it was listed on one of those deal sites like slickdeals. It used actual cartridges and AA batteries which lasted a long time and had a back-lit screen. I was amazed I got such a thing for so cheap. Sadly, it was stolen with my copy of Metroid in it.

If I made this, I would have definitely made it look a bit nicer for 180 bucks. Some putty and some paint with a nice clear coat and this thing would look awesome. Maybe a steam punk theme. If it were mine, I'd definitely paint the shell.

I mean cool, but it would be way better if they better molded it to fit comfortably in the hand and sanded down around the cartridge slot. Maybe put a slightly larger screen in there to make the device a little longer so the cart doesn’t hang over as much and maybe move the speakers next to the screen or right under it.

That part you pointed at saying that is a battery protection is incorrect, that would be buck converter to up the voltage since that 18650 is max 4.2 Volts, the usb port is the actual battery protection called a TP4056, sadly this is a complete fire hazard since that board does do under/voltage but doesn't have load sharing, so DO NOT (I REPEAT) DO NOT Charge while playing this thing since that will put a load on the TP4056 and since it sees that the battery is empty will keep pumping more voltage into the battery.

For that price you might as well buy an NES, get a soldering iron and do the work yourself. I totally understand someone not having the time or skills to build something like this. Maybe I'll tackle a project like this after my guitar pedal projects.

Might have been done on a Prusa printer. The build plate has a cool texture so you get a nice finish on one face

99.9% sure the board(s) are from the Hyperkin Retron 1 AV. I took one apart before to see how easy it would be to use for projects like this.

I'd guess the cartridge slot will become looser over time, so it will be easier to remove carts. The form factor isn't bad, but the lack of battery charge indicator could be an issue - how will you know if the battery is low? (I know it may not be so easy to do, but it could benefit from this, I'd think!). Not quite sure what the AV inside is required for - if you cannot use it due to the form factor! (It seems a bit redundant!).

Probably just never bothered to remove them from the board, as this board is from a Tv based console.

It's somewhat less than ideal, but an inexpensive voltage measurement device can give you a decent sense. Most (all?) commercially used rechargeable battery chemistries have well defined behavior. One aspect of that is that the voltages at discharged, fully charged, and while draining are known. Just look up the discharge curve for a Li-ion battery.

It is NOAC - Nintendo on a chip . It is developed by Famiclone manufactures to reduce prices from 15-20$ to 8-10$ and now obviously cheaper and lower quality .

Pretty cool custom Nes console, I do think the creator needs to do some fine tuning cosmetic on case and to clean up the wiring a bit more proper, I probably wouldn't pay 2 hundred for it but I think if the creator did some cleaner work on the system it would probably convince me to buy one for my NES collection.

Looks a little uncomfortable to hold, but not bad for fairly basic 3D print. Pity they couldn't get the cart to sit flush against the case. Man that wiring job though... -- I'd guess the guts are a famiclone that had a built-in cartridge slot.

I would have been impressed with this device like.. 15 years ago, but we live in an age where people chop and build portable game cube's, dreamcast's, and PS2's that actually look GOOD. Remember that fake portable Wii picture... and that guy who years later physically built it??!! $200?! I wouldn't have paid $100

That textured pattern looks like it was printed on a textured PEI print bed. The unit looks like a refined version of the portable NES concept people have made in the past. I think the cartridges fit "tighter" because while the original NES used a "Zero insertion force" cartridge connector, this machine uses a standard card-edge connector like the Genesis, or SNES or the original Atari etc uses. Its interesting that the design uses a original controller PCB etc, because now modern PCBs can be made even in small batches, and the only chip used in the controller is a simple shift register, still available today. The unit is a good design - much better than the ones people made years ago. I may try my hand at something like this, if I can find a source for Famiclone chips :)

Depending on the console they can be expensive. If you made it yourself consider your time and materials. Don't be afraid to ask high and barter with an interested buyer.

i would say since this is not using authentic parts its junk. The novelty factor is only it being that it is running a trimmed original hardware board but other then that why would someone need to buy a fake clone nes portable when nes games are the definition of easy to run on any old hardware.
