Alright, France might technically be closer, but they don't speak English. I can't sensibly explain it to you, but the thought process is different. Then again, I lived in Bratford for a while (Yes if you live there it is Bratford not Bradford) It was odd the West Yorkshire locals tended to be misanthropes. Worked in a Factory that had locals(?) Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims that were ethnically Pakistani and Bangladeshi. Sikhs, I never had a problem with Pakistani Muslims, there was only one I ever got on with. If two countries that are physically so close we can think differently, whoever though importing people from halfway round the world would go well.

My Dad used to drive a Taxi 405 which had the 1.9 N/A engine. It was on over 300k when it finally broke. The car regularly had 4 people in it, other drivers would bounce it up kerbs, wheel spin, etc. The engine had a small water leak and my Dad would top it up regularly. One day, another driver got in the car and he never topped it up, causing the engine to overheat and break.

I know a taxi driver who had a Rover 218D with the 1.8D that the 205 had. When he scrapped it it had about 700,000 miles on it. The engine was still running reliably but the body had rusted beyond repair.

Wouldn't be surprised if the 405 Taxi was clocked back to be honest. It was an ex taxi when the second taxi company bought it. Someone had tried to fit new rear seats and drilled through the fuel tank. This meant the tank could only be filled up about half or diesel would enter the car.

One of the best cars I have ever owned mine was on a N plate . It was my company car from new which they sold to me for peanuts when the government changed the company car tax rules. It was ultra reliable apart from regular servicing cambelts every i think 40000 miles as this it its only weak spot and clutch no other works were ever done to it when I passed it on to my then young son it had 403000 miles on the clock. The only problem that it had from new was the rear luggage area interior lights didn't work and Peugeot never were able to fix them . My son almost got it to 425000 then decided to put it through a hedge and in a field. The engine was sold and ran on for many more years after that. The 1900 hdi engine properly looked after is one of the best engines ever built for longevity and reliability, I hope you have lots of fun with yours.

They had Cherished Plates so I don't know the Reg numbers to get were registered on. I remember the smell, unforgettable and the newness of them both. I loved them. The were both Black the first was a GL and the other was a GLX if I remember correctly. Good fuel consumption, performance and reliability. The newer one had a Keypad between the front seats & the driver had to insert a Pin before it would start. I never had a problem with either except once while driving in heavy rain the driver's wiper arm disattached itself from the mechanism. I never liked the front doors as the angle at the top was quite acute? often causing head bumps. PS I did about 24k miles annually so appreciated the comfort and features.

Just watched your Peugeot 405 episode. I had one a few years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I only had two hates about it though... don't open the front windows in the rain (especially if slowing down) as the resulting cascade of water from the roof douses the window switches! Also the left hand glow plug is a nightmare to remove or replace. Other than that it's a capable, comfortable motor that will go for miles. I sold mine for a Saab 9-3, a cracking car, but now have...... A 2005 Volvo XC70 5 cylinder diesel estate! Best car ever. Thanks for your insights and entertainment, it makes a change to see someone who is realistically grounded these days. Alan Roberts

One other niggle is the hard, sliding parcel shelf on the 405 estate is awkward to store in the car. I still have a range topping STDT estate that's been stored gathering dust since around 2007. I bought a Mondeo estate, simply because we had more room for two big dogs, and the roller blind style load cover took up little space.

I had a turbo one of these, same colour, bought it off a blokes drive for £30, had it booked in for an mot on the way home, it hadn't been started for two years! It failed on a few minor things, wipers, light out , stuff like that. Fixed and passed the next day.... Ran it cooking oil for a while and even some waste oil from an oil change! I couldn't kill it! I did a few surf runs to North Devon in it and it was faultless. I can't remember why I stopped using it, but ended up swapping it for a CB rig, the car itself may still be alive somewhere!

My Dad actually bought a lovely example 405 GTX estate in a supermarket car park whilst waiting for my mum to do her shopping, as the lady parking it had trouble and couldn’t get in a gap, so my dad parked it for her, then he asked her would you want to sell it, so the following day a 405 was on the drive. He kept it 5 trouble free years, but instantly regretted selling it, so it took me a couple of years to find another, as I wanted to get him the best low mileage example possible and got him a lovely 40000 mile GTX estate out the local paper for £700. I also had a lovely low mileage poverty spec1.9 XUD Xantia, which I bought off my then next door neighbour and kept it for years and it NEVER went wrong and is the most reliable engine known to mankind, it was so good that when it came to holidays around the country, everyone wanted to borrow it, as it was just such a lovely car to drive and it was economical and you weren’t getting any speeding tickets with it. I ended up selling it on to another neighbour opposite about 5 years later, so it didn’t go far, only for him to crash it and write it off, which was such a shame, as it was still in outstanding condition.

They are a brilliant car, and exellent on fuel from that 1905cc XUD engine. I have a 1994 405 STDT 5 speed 1.9 turbo diesel estate, that's been in storage since around 2007. An ex dealer demonstrator, with my brother-in-law as its first owner before me. I really should get it recommissioned as they're a rare sight in any spec now.

How about a roadtrip to the Musée de L'Aventure Peugeot in Sochaux France, near the Swiss boarder

55mpg according to the seller’s account of his Leeds to Coventry journey. (Assuming £1.50 / litre over 250 miles)

That video made my week. First job on the 405; Drill and tap the centre of the rear arms, where they're attached to the axle, for grease nipples. Thank me in 500k miles later👌

Super cool, indeed indestructible ! You should be able to use a mix of diesel and old fried oil And almost no electronics so top!

This 405 would be ideal for trips across France, Belgium, Netherlands. If you ever would break down every french workshop could fix it double quick. I seem to remember that i also saw plenty Peugeots over in Ireland (that was in 2000 tho) I used to own a BX TRD1.9 with that same engine. In the end it used quite some oil and i just kept adding the old used oil that i had accumulated over the years. That way i didn't have to buy new oil and i got rid of the old oil. How convenient!😂 In the end it succumbed with 552k km on the clock!

The Bosch fuel pump versions run lovely on chip shop oil, the Lucas fuel pump isn't so much a fan of it.

@@leepower2717 'not a fan' = pump goosed in 250miles.....

@@leepower2717Within a week of using veg, fecked up 3 pumps. They all ran great until you put your foot down on the motorway and found out it's not accelerating like it used to. The advance piston jams at the bottom of the Bosch pumps.

Geoff at our College we have a 1997 Peugeot 406 Estate, that has done 30 (yes Thirty) miles from New. It was a mis-build, so donated to college. The mis-build being it did not have a Turbo, it is LHD though. XUD engine. Never been registered.

I have bought a number of cars from FB Marketplace and have had good experiences with the sellers, my last car was a 2006 Honda Civic 2.2ltr diesel, it was the best car I owned, it was just a shame I had to sell it as I could no longer afford to keep it on the road as I had lost my job. The insurance premium was just too much for me to keep it going. I do miss that car.

Had a look at one of those back in the 90s but opted for another diesel Rover instead. Incidentally I'll probably be searching for a new home for my 75 CDTI SE Connisseur Tourer very soon.
