When the axle is lowered, and you put it in lift position on the swith you can put in the mid position to stop it from raising completely leaving extra weight on the drive wheels. Just flip it back to down position again and it regulates back to taking load off the drive wheel. Very useful if you need to get up slippery roads and need some more load on the drive wheels. On that range change failure on the RHD trucks we found most of the issues were in the wiring loom from the cab to the chassis on the right hand side above the air cleaner. You can circuit test it and it looks fine but stick a 60 watt bulb on it and it fails due to water corrosion in the loom. We were always repairing that loom. Not sure if the LHD trucks had the same loom but I am guessing it will have. The actual shift solenoid didn't give too many problems.

Also nice thing to note that there is a Scania in the Scania museum that came from their US adventure. Scania had a presence once on the US truck market but that didn't go wel. The customers just wanted to be able to have too many options that they can choose from like engine and transmission brands ect. Id say the 144 is the better truck, 14liter engine is the best one! The "automatic" gearbox is just a manual witha robot that change gears for you, very annoying to drive and lots of issues, specially the older ones. If you want a auto try to find one with a allison in it, they are very rare but they exist or maybe swap in. Its very common that the solenoid for the low/high range just gunk up with time, take it apart and clean it and you should be good to go(to much neglect of draining the airtanks of moist and not changing that airdryerfilter makes this happen). Gratulaltions on the new truck and keep up the good work.
@1chish11 ай бұрын
I totally agree about the 14.2 litre. Much easier to work on the fuel system. But I disagree about the 'automatic' ECU manual box. Saves a load of work for the driver. My only grip was the early ones you had to use the clutch to start off and then it was done by the ECUs.
@SnorreV811 ай бұрын
@@1chish I agree the opticruise is very beginnerfriendly if the driver just dont wanna engage with the truck and put the pedal down and get on with his life and go home after a hard days work, but as a driver that wanna engage with the truck and get to know it in and out how to match gears and revs to flow perfectly with traffic and landscape then the opticruise is hella lot more work to get that perfect smooth driving ( have to play with the gaspedal perfectly depending on slopes so it doesnt up/downshift when you dont want to, and also have to play around alot it in the "manual" mode witch kinda defeat the purpose to have a automatic gearbox. To be fair the computer cant see trafic and landscape, it only gets the drivers inputs and the load on the truck from going up/downhill etc. but thats why i prefer the manual gearbox to save all the work for my brain and less frustration and bonus it just makes a better soundpattern going through the gears listening to that straightpiped v8. The newest opticrusies from like like 2020 and forward actually work pretty decent, but volvos ishit is still miles ahead.
@1chish11 ай бұрын
@@SnorreV8 I hope you weren't inferring people who prefer these gearboxes don't know how to drive or change gears. I drove 'semis' for nigh on 30 years before going into the workshop so knew how to shift gears. When I retired from Scanias at 65 I did my last 6 years driving and I really saw the benefits of these 'automatic' gearboxes. And I drove Renault (which is Volvo), Volvo FH and Scania. Maybe at that age I did want an easier life I will grant you. But I still knew what those trucks were doing and why. Interesting you say manual gear shifting saves work for your brain. I don't figure that one out at all. The ECUs have a far faster reaction to a situation than any driver and they leave the driver to concentrate on the road ahead and keeping safe. The only input that is really needed is when hard pulling up a hill and at the top the ECU will shift up a gear as the load reduces but the driver may want to hold a lower gear for the retarder as the road then goes down hill. Its a proven fact that these gearboxes will a) never wear out a clutch and b) save a shed load of fuel.

The lift axle switch has 3 settings.. middle is normal drive mode.. push up it lifts and when push down it release the airbag pressure of the lift axle but stays on the ground.. it's how my old Scania in Norway worked 20 yes ago

So bruce let me exsplane the set up you have it's called a tag axel in the UK an Europe it is used for manoeuvrability so in a tight spot you can lift it to turn better if it's heavy and you lose traction you can put the switch in the middle and it will transfer weight to the drives for more traction the super single is instead of the doubles
@1chish11 ай бұрын
Super singles replace single dished wheels as the axle is too wide to accept duals.
@marknewell735511 ай бұрын
@1chish yea sorry that's right double tag is different axle

Gunner's new forklift is epic! Pretty cool that he pulled right up to his pallet and got it airborne and moving almost immediately! Good luck on the 'new' Scania. It looks like the frame is in quite a bit better shape than your other truck. The interior is pretty plush also. Probably an easy fix on the trans splitter.. maybe a bad solenoid or similar.😉👍👍

When it comes to Scania, older is better. Here it is often more failures and breakdowns with the commonrail engines than the good old manual diesel pump engines. less electroning around the engine = les failures. And yes most filures is not the engine but different sensores that give a failure message and shut down the system. often a sensor replacement or data upgrade solve the problem.

lift axle switch. midle pos. axle down, but no pressure on it. we use that in winter to get more gripp in the snow. i am from norway. drove for 25 years all over europe.

definitely cool as hell, especially hooked to a american trailer but i think a rear drive axle, lights, and stacks are all it needs, i understand why you did what you did to the old scania, it was just too far gone but this one is in near perfect condidtion i hope you keep it that way, and maybe illl catch you going by on 10 about mm142 in florida if you dont take 75 i uused to ride by your dads shop for about 10 years when i was kid,
@1chish11 ай бұрын
why does it need a rear drive axle? Thousands of trucks drive millions of miles in Europe with higher weights than in the USA and they drive just fine with 4 x 2 or 6 x 2 setups. I am OK with stacks but I also think it has enough lights.

In South Africa we have a mix of American, Swedish, German and Japanese . Lately some Chinese brands as well as indian brands . But Scania and Volvo are kings then MAN and Mercedes.

Would be interesting to see Bruces take on newer and different brands of trucks here in Europe, I own MAN TGXs and DAF XFs(the DAF has paccar engines), but would like to see his reaction to volvos ivecos or Mercedes. Maybe he'll visit Europe one day, maybe even a truck show in Belgium or the Netherlands

@Khmtravelvlog would like to see his opinion behind the steering wheel of an XG+, or a new TGX, these things feel alien compared to what Americans use

That black Scania you took a look at is an Ex Nitteberg truck from Norway, I have seen those trucks many times.

It’s a shame they took the mudguards off it. They look so much better with the mudguards fitted to the drive and tag wheels. Are your 5th wheels the same as the ones we use in UK?

Its quite nice.👍 Even though I prefer 6x4 more.😎 That R580 is actually pump injector engine. Common rail came first with 730 and few years later to others. Btw I did not catch is that Bruce's new one 460 or 530? Original Holset turbo in those 530 versions is so wicked sounding..🤩😎

That's the better chassis now it's been uprated you can get this option with tag from scania usually plated for 60t but be warned if you do want to show off don't do any pull contest because you will strip the diff no problem these get immense traction with the tag axel lifted and a load just with how the 5th wheel sits I have seen many strip from performing wheelies when heavy. You can see the side by side difference, but these are 2 good examples people often miss. What I'm saying is use the tag axel and try not to wheelie because it will bend metal to do so 😅 you could add a twin drive lift axel scania also build this into this type of chassis can be done also uprated chassis with it making it 150t that truck would then be around £200k in the uk cat 2 or 3 very cool

Looks like that boogie axle is a steering axle. So if i was you i would keep it this way. It's easier turning in tight spaces.
