So there's an environmental impact when guys ride on a motocross track, or trails. But there's no environmental impact when land developers come in and bulldoze entire areas and scrape every living thing off the surface of the earth, and then build hundreds of houses there? No noise or anything involved with bulldozers and earth-moving equipment either? Well, I guess it all has to do with who has the most money.

Trevor man, that is so TRUE! Several years ago in Tucson there was an area of desert that they closed off to even mountain bikes for a while. Then guess what. You got it....they cleared the desert off and put up expensive homes. That was an eye opening experience that I won't ever forget. When it comes to money, anything can be done. Therefore, I have adjusted my world views/opinions on that.

Thanks Tanner, great show re the Varg. I like most of what you had to say, but will disagree on the battery tech. The Varg uses 2170 cells which have around 250 Wh (watt-hours) per kg, but another company (Amprius) just released cells (for aviation) that produce 500 Wh per kg, that's double, in about 5 years of development. These are pouch cells, not cylindrical, but if cells double again in 5-10 years, Bob's your uncle. Now you are getting up into 100-200 mi range. I'm hopeful, but probably too old (will I still be able to ride in my 70s?). Good for everyone else though. In the meantime thinking of getting one and adding 40-60 lbs of cells under the seat and along the sides of the current battery (think KTM 890 fuel tanks), make it an ADV bike. At that point they'd need to do DC fast charging/battery swap. Hope it's only another 5 years...

Awesome video ! I ve been riding/racing off road for almost 50 years. I ve got two national champion plaques in hare scrambles ( +40A and +50A) But I ve never even sat on an electric bike. Never had the desire too. But your video has opened my eyes to it and sparked an interest. Funny over the years I ve told people ( other racers) that I ve often detuned my bikes instead of searching for more power to make them more ridable . I ve often used a term in describing the power I love in my bike power delivery ( and I race and ride on both two and four stroke bikes) as " electric". Funny, how that term is transforming my thoughts now !

Great video! Thanks for including the Alta as it has lots of similarities to the Varg. One similarity is they both have approximately the same battery size of 6kWh so the range will be comparable for both bikes. It’s sad what Harley did to close down Alta. It’s a great bike and I enjoy riding it every chance I get. I have gas bikes too but the Alta is by far my favorite. Josh Hill just bought another Alta for his personal use and I think that’s a very strong statement. Thanks again for the great video.

@6:00 all bikes have the same hardware. The difference between the 60HP and the 80HP bike is software unlocking the extra HP. I ordered the 60HP on day one, and given that every review that actually included riding, the person saying they had the tech tune down the power, I think I made the right choice!
@mxoudi Жыл бұрын
Hey thank you for this video. It was SUPER super informative & I like all the points you went over. I pre ordered this bike within the first week it got announced, so I got grandfathered into the 13000$ price with the 80 HP version. I think the 1000$ price increase was fairly recent. I'm a class C rider/ weekend warrior who also rides trails sometimes. I'm thinking this bike should be enough but we should see more independent reviews when the first people get their Stark's in March. I'm hoping this will be enough to get me through the entire day of track tiding. 30 miles of trail riding is more than I would ever need & I think the Stark should have no problem hitting that, so this bike already suits the offroad department (atleast for someone like me). I'm really curious on how long it will last on an mx track. I don't prefer buying a generator for the Stark, but for those long weekend events I may have to. (not the end of the world, but whatever lol) I personally don't give a rats a*s about the "environment friendly" factor of this bike, reason being is because the environment is already compromised when we destroy acers of trees and land, running animals out of their natural habitat with bulldozers and other awful man made equipment to build a motocross track, so either way we're screwing the environment when you look at it from the bigger picture, and whether you're ridng a gas or electric bike is pretty irrelevant at that point LOL. The electric bike helps a little since there's no C02 emissions, but it's not the sole determinant of environmental damage by any means. I do love the Earth and do what I can to help, but there's not a whole lot of worrying that's worth doing at an individual level. I'm mainly excited for electric bikes because riding them is more fun to me, no shifting gears, instant torque, no waiting for the bike to warmp up, peace and quiet, no loud noises pi**ing people off, you can tune it to ride from a 125 to a 650, giving LOTS of riding options without having to mess with the gearing of your bike, and little to no maintenance which is probably the best part because I am NOT a mechanic or a handy person in the slightest. Just chains, sprockets, break pads, and bearing replacements which is little to nothing. The long term quality control issues are another thing that kinda concerns me. Would hate to spend 13k on a bike an 8 months later we discover a huge defect with little product support and puts my riding on hold, but seeing as Alta did fine I'm sure this will be okay as well but again we shall see! Thanks again for the video!

It's the same motor. 60hp and 80hp are just electronic unlocks. you can pay for the unlock later if you want. ofc, I post this 5 months later. 😁 edit: given the competitive price point, I see this easily replacing 450 4-strokes on the MX/SX track. It's like riding a 125cc 2-stroke with the a smoother, stronger power delivery than any 450cc 4-stroke. also no shifting, and moving the rear break to the handlebars makes cornering quicker to the (traditional) rear brake side. I'm more concerned right now with the battery efficiency decay (forget the technical term). Limiting this bike to any particular class based on HP for MX/SX won't go well for combustion engines, b/c this thing owns them in cornering and power delivery, plus the no gears/shifting and braking advantage. I foresee something similar to spoilers on race cars for the first 5 or so years that this bike races with combustion engines.

I hate to break it to you, but you're going to be VERY disappointed if you think the Varg is going to get more range than the Alta. For all purposes it's basically going to be the same. It's literally only a .2kwh larger battery. That's negligible, regardless of whatever mapping updates they've come up with. I can kill my Altas battery in 8 miles in Map 4 if I want. I can just squeak out 20 miles in the woods if I ride in Map1 super easy. But I hate riding easy, I like to rip. If you ride it on the road and stay under 30mph, then sure you can get more than 30 miles out of it. But you cannot take out for a full day of riding. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Alta MXR, it's the best bike I've ever ridden, but sadly I tend to always go for my KTM 350 XC-F since i can ride as much as I want and wring the crap out of it all day long without worrying about running out of juice. You have no idea what the capacity will be , as far as sun rime that is , yes .2 larger capacity , but what I’d the engine is more efficient ? Also stark have used are carbon sleeve electric moror the same as what Tesla have only recently developed . Is this more efficient? Supposedly it is . Did you factor this in ? Supposedly and electric motor with metal sleeve creates a counter force from the magnetic field created by motor , the carbon is non conducive and doesn’t have this negative force acting on motor. This electric revolution is such a crock of shit. Most people have no clue what kind of strain it'll have on our grid here in the USA and the cost of making the batteries is still on the insane side. Until there is a better method of making batteries, possibly solid state, EV shit is still going to be a waste for a majority of people. And we'll need to get the grid beefed up to handle all the DC fast charging. Some cities are making things happen, but it's going to take YEARS for the small cities to catch up. I think the Stark Varg will be fun and it'll get you some views on the channel for sure. So I hope you get it! It'll be interesting to see their range and run times or maybe if they'll make it easy to swap the battery pack out, then you could have a spare in the truck that maybe is even hooked up to some solar panels to keep it topped off. The future is going to be sweet ass for sure, but like you said, the ICE engine is going to be around for a long time. If you look to the largest car producer in the world, Toyota, they have no plans to abandon the ICE. Having said all that. If the Varg is a hot seller, I'm sure Yamaha and Honda has some good offerings that are ready to fly to market as well. Going to be an interesting next 5-10 years.

Here is a very non-fun option you may keep in the back of your mind. So, lets say your 30, or close to it. If you invested 14K into say a Vanguard index fund for 30 yrs at 7% interest and put in $200 a month you would have approx $333,000 at 60. I'm all about enjoying life, taking (a lot) of time off but I also have a mantra of not being broke at 60. So, I keep things reasonable and live way (way) below my means but not in danger of being called boring. Anyway, if you, or anyone reading this takes a moment to think about being 60 and broke, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts. I apologize for my completely unfun sounding advice.

As I get older I'm beginning to see older friends who had lots of cool stuff but are now struggling. And the truth of the matter is they made many poor financial choices. But hey, people can do whatever they want. I choose to have cheaper bikes and plenty of money.

@@TraviNomotion it's understandable: global crisis, raw material shortage, the necessity to build a factory from the ground up and the fact they're a small and new manufacturer. Tesla has done the same with pretty much every vehicle they made (cybertruck, roadster, the semi truck ect). I'm one of the first to have ordered the bike, so i'm a bit pissed but i can understand the difficulties

I may be alone in my opinion but think about this. 4 strokes can be quieter than 2 strokes but their sound seems to travel farther. Having worked around electric motors most my life I find their sound annoying. Out in the open(oilfield) or indoor(printing presses/forklifts) it's the same to me. When you push performance levels they all up the sound. Electric off road motorcycles won't stop track/trail closings. I think there is room for 2/4/E /hydrogen and whatever else people are working on. I don't believe ev anything are the magic solution to our problems.

well since you say it's a toy for the rich and you have it why not just buy one of those electric power bank generators they have them with 220 that way you can charge it without a noisy generator going while at the truck or even charge while in the truck if you were going to more than one spot in a day

I really wanted to hear your thoughts on the Surron.. I know its more like a mountain bike but theres a huge modding community behind it... it seems like with all the mods you can do to them you spend about 10k, maybe more now since a lot of ppl want them.. thing is I think stock they compare to like a 200cc or something...
@JoshStreetDesign Жыл бұрын
A stock sur ron is NOW WHERE NEAR a 200cc gas bike, although I don't even know of any 200cc gas bikes, they're 150 or 250. Only someone who hasn't ridden either would say that no offense. A stock sur ron is practically equivalent to an 80cc. Sur Rons are also tiny. Way smaller than you realize.

I think you're going in the wrong direction. You like slow and technical riding, so you're buying an electric motocross bike? You should check out actual (made in America) electric mountain bikes. Not the Chinese ones. I mean the electric mountain bikes made by companies like Trek, Specialized, Orbea, Niner, Giant, Yeti....they are amazing bikes. They are class 1 bikes(pedal assist only, no throttle), so you can ride them everywhere legally, including bicycle trails. A Specialized Turbo Levo will change your life. You'll have to spend at least 5k to get into one of these bikes, but it's so worth it. I think you'd have a blast on these full suspension bikes. Almost all of them have a 29" front wheel to roll smoothly over almost any damn thing. Most are less than 55 pounds and you can trail ride all day without worrying about battery. I sold my KTM and bought one of these electric mountain bikes recently. I have zero regrets. I can ride so many new trails that were off limits to me previously. If you want a good cardio workout, put the bike on eco and go to town. Refrain from turbo mode, it will spoil you! A bonus for me is riding to and from the trails in the comfort and safety of my car. I used to not enjoy the ride home on my dual sport.
