I Bought An ABANDONED Honda Civic From A Church PARKING LOT

I've been driving by this 2005 Honda Civic for YEARS and tried to buy it many times. It was abandoned in a church parking lot when it broke and appears to have been there since 2018. I was finally able to make a deal on it and said I'd be there to pick it up this week. Gabe and I headed over to the parking lot with a trailer, and that's where the fun starts! This is a lot more car than I expected, now we just need to get it fixed.

🙄yeah..that’s total aggravation..I have 2 civics..01 and 03 models..the 03 had the airbag supposedly fixed and good to go only for me to get a letter later on to inform me the airbag they replaced the defective airbag with was defective as well..🤦‍♂️kind of defeats the purpose 🤔 of the first airbag replacement right? Maybe the third time will be the charm? Who knows..waste of time..not even gonna screw with the other one, I’ll take my chances with the IED exploding in my face I guess..If I took it back in I’d rather them just gut the whole airbag system and not have it at all..seatbelt would be better with no airbag as opposed to a chemical explosion that sends a Kirby ghost bag to my vessel making me feel like Mike Tyson just punched 😵 🥊 me in the fucking face with some gloves laced up with shrapnel..I’m not in a hurry to take it in..do you know the number of vehicles that have recalls on them?? @@frankm8533 Whoa! 😳. I've been to Baltimore once, 20 years ago a month before 9/11 for Otakon. I can remember us driving our GMC Blazer on the interstate then we got off 2 exits early. Seeing the rowhouses and the looks given to us 4 white guys from Michigan as we made for the Convention center next to Camden Yards was... interesting to say the least. @@frankm8533 This one is hard to steal since it's part of the exhaust manifold, located between the radiator and the engine block. Unless they literally tore the front of the Civic off, it's hard to get to. The '01-'05 Civic DX and LX were set up like this, but the EX had the more traditional downpipe and cat under the car. Even then, they'd have to jack up the car or be about 3" thick to fit under there. 😁

Bet the trans is fine, just a bad speed sensor or a chaffed wire, as when it was in park and when you started it to leave orileys, it shot up 60.

Exactly what I was thinking. Idk if the same signal to the speedometer goes to the ecu but it’s possible the ecu thinks it’s going as fast as it says on the speedo and shifting into OD too soon. There’s no way it’s just a simple speed sensor swap and it’s fine or I’ll be mad 😆

@@Addison0526 likely uses the data from it to decide what gear it needs to be in, basically the trans was constantly shifting and then trying to go into od at idle. My guess is a bad ground that’s chafed and seeing power from something else which is giving a false reading on the speed and throwing the trans into a fit

The exhaust leak is a common issue--the exhaust manifold is known to develop a crack. The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust manifold--I had to replace mine (2004 LX) to get rid of the leak. It's possible someone could weld it with the right equipment. It wasn't the exhaust manifold gasket (replaced it when I swapped in a new cylinder head and the leak had gotten worse). Headliner's a common issue also--haven't fixed ours yet.

I once had to replace a headliner, it seems to be a theme for you now. Got some material, removed the headliner. Removed the headliner fabric. Spray adhesive on the shaped part as well as the fabric. I then laid the fabric on the formed part. Here was the trick. Happened to have an old mattress bag, the kind the mattress came in. Placed the entire thing inside the mattress bag and hooked it up to the shop vac. Kept the negative pressure for a while so it followed and kept the shape of the rigid part. Easy job and it came out perfect. Give it a try

Look over the exhaust manifold closely because there might be a crack between cylinders 2 and 3. I've seen them so bad they came out in two pieces. Replacement manifolds have addressed the issue and they're only around $350.

Pro tip: If a car has been sitting longer than over night you dont need to wipe the dip stick and dip it back in. All the oil is right where its going to be the 2nd time.

Persistence pays off. And a Honda is always a safe bet. Best of luck with the flip, wish I could talk you out of the car for just a tad over what you gave for it. My wife and I are currently relying on a 2008 Suzuki SX4 with 280k for transportation to work as well as a semi-regular drive from Dallas to Kansas City to visit our daughter and grandkids. Our granddaughter was diagnosed with leukemia back around the beginning of 2020, and is on her second round of treatment after relapsing. Having lost my step-son to leukemia 20 yrs ago, this hits our family very hard and I’ve been looking for an inexpensive mechanics special that has a bit more life left and would be at least somewhat easier to maintain. I’m a decent mechanic, and the Suzuki is ok…it has AWD, and an automatic, which is very capable as we found out during the Texas freeze back in February. However despite it’s small size, the weight of the drivetrain and the slush box it only gets about 26mpg at best. It’s getting cantankerous, but it’s fairly reliable. If you happen to see this and are interested in working a deal, I’d be very interested.

Definitely could be a sensor. EG civics have an issue where the Speedo jumps around / car bogs that can be traced back to the VSS or a bad solder on the speedometer

There might be a relationship between the speedo issue and the 15v+ you're seeing from the alternator. It's been known to cause electronic issues when you get over ~14.8 on many cars.

Eh, the regulator was working, just hard on them trying to charge a completely dead battery. It clamped back down to 14v real quick 🍻

I have a 2002 Honda Civic LX that has that exhaust leak issue, common problem, those D17s are known for head gasket issues too. I blew mine and replaced it. Just a heads up might want to take a look at the cooling system for safe measure especially at that mileage, mine blew at 172000

These honda's are known for their engine blocks cracking. Mine cracked at 9.5 years. Of course honda said - sorry we only extended the warranty on the cracking to 8 years. thanks Honda! Good luck with your Civic. Hopefully, you won't have a cracked block.

Drove really tight, handled wonderfully. I really like the 2nd gen TSX wagons. If we didn't have CR-Vs here, I'd probably hunt one down.

I had a Prizm (Corolla) speedo do funny things like that and pulled the cluster to solder in new capacitors. As a manual it didn't affect drivability, but was a rewarding project for resale. Could be a wonky speed sensor gear on the transmission; hopefully the Autel can shed some light.

Everything that's wrong, is what's also wrong with mine... Transmission, headliner, leaks, cracked manifold, but just to be safe you'll replace the timing belt, water pump, and oil pump. The timing bolt tensioner hole might strip and the upper strut bearings need replacing. Check the hand brake for a broken cable. Oh yeah and don't forget the HEAD GASKET but yeah it's reliable. 😆

If it's a exhaust leak if it's not horrible as it heats it'll probably quiet down as the metal expands. You already planned on the transmission so I think you're going to be fine and you have the connections for cheap or donated parts. Another some work car that will be good eventually and sell for at least a minor profit if not better.

Honda ATF DW-1 it will not work correctly without genuine fluid..I worked at Honda and work at Acura. Take my word for it. Do the 12 qt flush.

When the transmission on 05 grand caravan blew it did that with the speedometer right before it couldn’t move under its own power anymore lol
