In today's video I reveal my Volkswagen Touareg I've been sitting on for a few months now! Its plagued with gremlins so was it worth it?

I’ve got a 07 v10, the battery system is a little complex on these cars. Battery under the passenger seat provides power to all modules, you can jump this using the engine bay terminals. The battery in the boot is just for starting the engine and only connects to the system when the key is turned. The volt gauge on the dash only shows the voltage of the battery under the passenger seat. If that battery is not supplying more than 10v to the modules they won’t talk to vcds. A lot of electrical gremlins clear up with a fully charged battery.

Hi Dean, Before you test the ECU look at the immobiliser module as when these go faulty they stop you connecting to the ECU. Its worth spending time on this car and when you sort out what may be one electrical fault everything else will seem straight forward.

The important battery on these is the supply battery under the seat. The one in the boot is only for starting the engine. Touaregs and phaetons are extremely picky about battery’s. Slight low voltage and not using AGM battery’s can cause any electrical problem you can possibly think of. Also charging the rear battery does not charge the battery under the seat, as it’s only connected when in use or being charged by the alternator. You can charge the supply battery from the terminals under the hood, but you’re technically not supposed to, as it can also upset he cars electronics

Agreed. I've now installed a 60ah 1450ca lithium battery under the seat. Fixed all my hot start issues. Battery only weights 8kg too.

Indeed - there are TWO batteries in these and it is crucial they are both fully charged and in perfect health; these cars hate low voltages. Check for water ingress in both front footwells - the sound insulation under the carpet holds water like a sponge and will slowly corrode the electrical components located there. I don't think it's a 2003 car. The headlights suggest it's a facelift 2006 and onwards model. What a wonderful machine and we will never see their like again so you need to save it! Get those two batteries replaced then take it from there. Cheers!
@ianrudge45802 жыл бұрын
Battery in boot is only a starting battery. There’s another one under the passenger seat that runs the central electrics.

Check the fuses mate. Could be that the fuse is gone for the obd2 socket. You should have 12v on pin 16 at all times. If they are OK and you have an oscillascope, then if you check pins 6 and 14 you'll be able to see if you have a good CAN waveform. It should look like a mirror image, so as one signal goes high the other goes low. If you don't have an oscillascope then you could try unplugging modules one by one and retrying vcds, as if you have a bad module it can mess up the whole CAN system.

I have a fully loaded V8 and absolutely love it (aside from the cost of ownership). If I were to have bought a new Corolla, I would be upside down the same amount of money in the end (factoring in maintenance and additional fuel costs). I keep mine meticulously maintained, and most people can't believe it's a 2005. You get way more for your money than a brand new Corolla too (except for Apple CarPlay and resale value). If you can afford a $20,000 car, I'd highly recommend a V10 Touareg (or W12)

It's a bloody Tank. Not liking that sound under the high revs though... This thing will hoover up puppies and small children. The battery under the seat might clear up a lot of issues for you mate get that on direct charge everything is pointing to that for the simple electric trips but this wasn't parked up originally because of a flat battery as you know. It sounds like Fragle Rock on a cold start and that's probably normal enough for these but my ear just hears money getting chewed up under that bonnet. Will make for really interesting content i believe but you might end up in a straight jacket after this lad. Good luck and keep up the great content.

If its anything like the porsche cayenne look under the passenger side carpet. There might be corrosion in the wiring that may need cleaning and soldering. The carpet may be soaked from the air-conditioning over the years. Or it may have second battery under the passenger seat that may have failed.

I have one of these monsters, it's abit of a problem child but I can live with it. The v10 has 2 batteries, one in the boot and another under the passenger seat, I think the reason why vdcs can't read the car is because the battery under the seat is dead, this battery runs all aux and the battery in the boot starts the engine. Try charging both batteries, Please don't scrap it, do the right that by this rare beast and put it back as it should be. It will put a massive smile on your face when you pit your right down.

I was totally sold on this car, ( but couldn’t afford it, or anything else much at the time!). Mr Sensible says bin it, but Mr I Love V10’s says sort it. Obviously had a Construction, agricultural or transport sort of dude owning it at some time, with rough hands, that scraped off all the interior trim! GROUNDS GROUNDS GROUNDS. Diesels live and die electrically because of the grounds. So, go over ALL the grounds where they attach to metal... engine bay, chassis and especially those to the ECM. Give them a good cleaning with a wire brush. Reassemble / attach with a contact PROMOTER (not dielectric grease). Here in 'The Colonies' I use 'NOALOX' found in the electrical dept. of the hardware store. Protects from corrosion and promotes connectivity. Pro Tip, don't use IN multipac connectors as you'll cause shorts across the pins and then you're F'd.

I've had a few German diesels ( one in my Jeep that will pull down a house!) & more than a few VW's (Yup; started in the air cooled Porsches and VW's a Looong time ago) I ran an auto , truck & large marine electric shop for a few years.. Every German car Loves (& eats!!) batteries.. especially if they are anywhere below 12 - 12.3 resting volts! 1); Charge that big Yuasa, & 2): put a load test on it. If it is anywhere near 10 v or less.. DITCH IT! German electronics are pretty poor... even worse with a weak battery, weak alternator or...ANY Compromised cable or plug connection due to corrosion or just a poor connection. Pull ALL the major connections (right after you change the battery) and clean & re-install. Should start , run & some codes should go away Yea.. fix it ..I'd give a lot for a V-10 diesel!! Thanks for the video from the USA.

I then did a running test on alternator using a multimeter...This confirmed low voltage output (Common on Valeo alternators).. Purchased new alternator brushes (ebay £12)...Hey Presto...All the above issues fixed...Drastic symptoms leading to easy fix... Not saying this is the cause of your issue but definitely worth testing.

Check your Terminal 15 voltages in the fuse box. The spare wheel well looks rusty as though it may have been full of water at some point in which case there are some connections in there which may be rotten and dropping the supplied voltage which would cause absolute havoc on the electrics. was it worth it? No. You cant even imagine how much this car would cost you to put it up into proper running roder. I mean proper. And it still will be Fugly sqeaky sqealy interior with falling off parts. Its incredible how much VW did fuck up compared to Q7 I and Cayenne. Same platform same tech and this is the result. That V10 is magical but equally magical shit, impossible to repair with all inherent faults which cannot be rectified easily. Well not to lie its possible, for some 10-15k if you do work yourself. Sorry man, these are not worth saving. Q7 V12 TDI on the other hand... But that costs really 10x as much as these worn out V10s.. for a reason.

It is also a very early one in the first few months of being on sale so probably a dealer demonstrator originally. What to do?…for content it would be fascinating bit for you, huge bills and a wallet emptying exercise far beyond its value. The MOT history is not that bad though…my guess is a good life until 2008/9 but afterwards, probably not much servicing or care. £2500…was big money…try a few simple fixes, if they work, MOT then to an Auction after a big clean up and scrapyard sourced new switchgear/knobs etc. Good luck with that!!😱😱😱😱😬😬😬😬😳😳🙂

Not the ECU!! Most of the electrical issues will be the wiring harness which was crap spliced from the factory on all of em! I'm in the US (ex-pat) and all 4 of my V8 Touaregs have needed the driver's (left) side foot well harness repaired. The wiring actually corrodes away to nothing at these joints, possibly because they didn't clean off the solder flux! Lots of videos on this but make sure you get all the factory splices. That harness runs up the foot well into the firewall plenum. I'm not sure if the wiring harness is reversed left to right in UK... Fix those and you'll be surprised how much works again. Best of British to you sir.

When I worked in Police stations, years ago, I saw a Touareg, that looked a bit suspicious, in that there was a colour spray over down by the sill. A Policeman said "You wouldn't want that one, its two cars!" Its what they call a chop job, two cars that have been written off but rejoined to make one! What they do is join it at the top of the rear window, that way there is no seem across the middle of the roof. So what might seem a good cheap car- YOU NEED TO SEE IT UP ON A RAMP!!!

Since you keep calling it a piece of crap then Sell it to someone who knows what they are doing and who will actually appreciate it. If VCDS wont connect to any of the car's modules that usually means one of modules is hanging up the CAN BUS or there's a wiring fault on the CAN BUS. One tactic is to unplug one module at a time and see if you can connect to the others. Tedious work as no doubt some of them will be a b*****d to get to. That said under 10V on the voltage gauge is not good. So need to get that sorted first.

I was thinking from the video started you should just let this one go as not everything is worth saving and this is a money pit but after you have put 2.5k out already your kinda screwed. it''s not worth the effort or money. Who would even buy it the first repair is more than it's worth. It was a pointless car when VW made it. Your gonna have to take this one on the chin I think and the Porsche was a bad buy as well even though you done such a good job on it I'm afraid. That's gonna be an impossible sale unless you drop it a lot like break even drop it. No one's buying these cars unless it's on PCP or lease and anyone with big 40k plus to drop on a car can afford a straight one to start with.

First is checking both the batteries have the correct specs for the vehicle and then if they're good I'd unplug both the immobiliser and body control module as not being able to connect says to me that there's something on the Canbus or K-line causing comms issues. With so many body control items not working I'd say there's a fair chance the Body control module is faulty.

I'm in the camp of try get it running, but in understand your time Vs worth it. I'm not sure how KZbin works but if views and likes give you some payment, maybe stipulate how many views and likes you need per video so us as your community can try help that way.

The green indicator on batteries only shows the SG of one cell and so is only a rough guide. Interesting project an unusual and complex car, but the fact that there are so many alarms may be a good thing in the long run as they may all be common. I would persevere as running right this would be a reasonably desirable car -- I think £2.4k was a bit steep though !

It’s possible that this car isn’t CAN-BUS auto recognisable so you may need to select the model manually in VCDS

8v is not good. That will play havoc with the ECU and comms. I know I'm a week late, but stick a new battery on and see...

Maby start with getting the car in and let it dry out. Get out the moist of it and give it a clean. You can try a New battery and maby open som of the conecions and chek for moist and coroksion. (Sorry my English)!

Actually the vcds test wasn’t passed. K1 and K2 showed no power. So your obd port doesn’t provide any power to your laptop, check all of your fuses with a test light and charge the battery under the seat!

I think you should fix it as there’s no much Touareg content anyway, and it will be cool seeing it restored, would also be cool to get the manky switches swapped out, may be replacements i salvage yards etc.

I had a 58plate V10. Does yours have the battery below the passenger seat too? When mine started going funny I replaced both and it started to behave. Also, the key in the dash can be turned anti-clockwise to start with the other battery.

has some one facelifted the front end because an 03 plate should have the earlier style lights and grill etc, if it has been facelifted then this could potentially cause a fair amount of problems on its own also worth checking that someone hasn't put in a dummy obd connector and hidden the original as a security measure, it wouldn't be the first i've seen would love to see you sort out the issues and it would provide mountains of content but i can see that you're not really feeling it which is a shame

door locking is a common VW fault, the key is once for drivers door but twice for all other doors, the central locking is not getting the second signal at the boot, I have to open by rear door and the boot will open, cheaper than stripping the dash to replace the faulty sensor, s for the car I think a 5 litre will be very hard to sell, I would sory the stuff to make it safe and run, and sell it as aproject, you should be able to get your money back and a bit of profit,

Save it ! They are a dying breed and quite rare. This one will be tough but very interesting content and may help present/future owners of one to solve or diagnose problems. Good luck
