The safety systems of the better drills messed with your testing: 1. The restart protection prevents the drill from starting unexpectedly, when a battery is inserted. Normally, the user doesn't intend anything to happen, just by inserting a battery. The intend is given by freshly pulling the trigger, so the drills make you actually do that. So this is a pretty useful feature (under normal circumstances). 2. The blinking that some stopped drills did indicates an activated kickback control. The drill senses that it was rotating around itself and rather than break your arm, it shuts itself off. That really saved me a few times when a drill bit got suddenly stuck in the wall with a powerful drill. That can really mess up your arm, but my Bosch drill shuts itself off after around 25° rotation, which is pretty cool.
@Lord_zeel2 ай бұрын
Yup, if there is one take-away from this video, it's that most of these drills are seriously lacking in safety features.

I'd argue that the batteries disengaging after impact may be a design feature of the drills. If you drop a drill from a height and the battery separates, It definitely reduces the force of impact/absorbs a portion of the force.
@yetinother2 ай бұрын
Came to say similar, if I drop my drill I WANT the battery to fall out. It just shouldn't fall out during normal use
@mromutt2 ай бұрын
Yeah haha its a safety feature. The weak point on modern drills is the handle and if it takes all the impact force (like the drill landing on the battery and flexing the handle in half) it will snap or explode.
@terry504able2 ай бұрын
I disagree. I think the drill stops once the trigger isn't pressed so why do we need the batteries to pop out when dropped?
@MrArcticPOWER2 ай бұрын
@@terry504able It's true though. I work with both brands everyday. I've dropped dewalt tools from 2 story buildings into concrete but never managed to break anything. On the other end, milwaukee battery retainers not only rattle loose quickly, they also break easily.

Maybe not a safety feature, but... old Nokia phones were knows for losing their batteries when dropped. But they could survie like dozens of drops from various heights, e.g. stairs, survive it and were praised for durability.
@micadammurphy10 күн бұрын
Okay... lol, I shouldn't have to say this... the # setting with the 'drill' as the top... that's NOT a speed setting! That's the strength/torque (or maybe resistance)... so like a lower setting will stop turning by grabbing it with your hand even.. it's so you don't over-tighten a screw and have it break/crack/snap/fracture whatever material you're working with. Hence, the drill being the highest resistance setting, so it'll power your bit through whatever material you're trying to drill through. (Though it's also typically the default position for most applications once you have an idea how to use your drill with the normally TWO different speed settings and their torque!) Thanks for reading!

One huge glaring issue with this test, is that it only looks at build quality and weight...If two drills go against each other, both have the same build quality, but one is heavier, the heavier one will probably win. The lighter one will end up throwing itself around until it breaks. The heavier one will also put more stress on the chuck of the lighter drill. This would even let weight and girth to over shadow build quality issues because of the excess wear and tear being put on the lighter tools. This is witnessed when the makita loses. It was rotating twice as much as the kobalt, causing it to hit the ground more often, and harder.

That's part of durability.
@razorx9966Ай бұрын
@@regibson23No, it might not be like that. Quite the opposite. As far as I know, DeWalt has a strategy that involves the battery detaching in order to reduce the weight of the tool when it falls, thereby protecting it from more serious damage. Moreover, there's a simple question here: are we comparing the reliability of the drill itself, its durability, or how tightly the battery is attached? Why should it be firmly attached? What does that give us?

The Flex brand started in Germany in 1922 and developed the first flexible-shaft grinder in 1954. In 2013, Flex was acquired by the Chervon group (not to be confused with Chevron), which also owns the power tool brands EGO and Skil and makes Kobalt for Lowe's. Lowe's Home improvement owns the Kobalt name.

We need a fresh Milwaukee vs Flex to settle this for good! That red victory was flawed, and both drills had already ran for quite a while. The visciousness of the milwaukee after the first battery fall out from flex, and jumping around the shop was enough to count as an "extra round" thr milwaukee had to go through. Still, that flex put up a hell of a fight and seeing a brand new drill from each go to the death in a final round would crown a clear, undisputed winner! Great vid, y'all.

@@David_Stevens Yeah I think there are some distinct chance that Rona (not familar with them but apparently a Canadian store) may be dropping Kobalt. Something I have missed in the quick Lowes research, is that Lowes sold all Canadian business (including Canadian Lowes stores). All Canadian Lowes will become Rona's and therefore they will be dropping the Lowes homebrand. Rona's actions have nothing to do with Kobalt.

The Milwaukees broken tooth meant that it wasnt supplying even force down the shaft, which meant it put pressure on the other drills in an uneven manner, leading to more metal stress.
