I decided to take things a step further. Now I don't just own a vintage motorcycle, I've got a crappy helmet and some old chubby snowmobile gloves to go with it!

I've always gone vintage. I was vintage when it was the norm. I'm that old, but where I'm from, the look is not complete without the essential white silk scarf. This marked you out, not only as a "Rocker", but a "Ton Up", meaning you'd broken the 100 mph barrier. No mean achievement on a Triumph!

the scarf was good coz it looked cool but was really to cover your face as it was cold and wellington boots turned down

I have a pair of the goggles from when I started riding. My mum bought them for me over 40 years ago. Please change the lenses. You can buy them new along with the straps from Halcyon. The lenses were originally tempered glass and could shatter if hit by a stone. Most of that gear we wore because we were broke.

1:27 Jackets are supposed to be like that when worn riding. 2:07 You might want to get raw selvedge jeans made in Japan. 2:51 Those boots will last you lifetime given the proper care. They're goodyear welted if I'm not mistaken and they can be resoled multiple times. Those are "bomb-proof" as others want to call it.

Any boot that's stitched to the sole is goodyear welt, and being wanky with expensive jeans is a bit ridiculous imo. Just get a pair of full denim non-designer 501 Levis from a secondhand store. Chances are the last person who owned them probably rode a bike in them as well, and they've always been around. They cost absolutely nothing too

Those gloves are actually pretty accurate. Everyone thinks everyone was super fitted in the past but actually were a little more baggy than today

I rode motorbikes in early 70s England. The most common Jacket was a Waxed Cotton Belstaff. Better weather protection in the rain (Because it was Britain) but inferior to leather in terms of protection. Also, By 1972 when I started Goggles were long gone, a clip on visor was far more common. I started with a poor quality helmet in 72. But graduated to a Full-face Griffin Clubman quite quickly, in part because I wore glasses since I was seven. All my 70s-80s bikes were Honda. I really liked them. One terrible thing - I used Derryboots horrible plastic rubbish. They were junk! the Boots you used were FAR superior. Today I own far better gear than existed in the 70s. Though I still wore Textile Jackets with armoured inserts and a back protector. I also used a Schuberth C2 Helmet (far better in every way). Quality Safety gear is essential, but it is NOT cheap.

Very vintage, and a definite Peter Fonda vibe. Some of my personal 1970's gear: Bell helmet with snap on, tinted, full face shield or aviators - not uncomfortable, motocross gloves, Levi's, Fry's cowboy boots, and try an Army field/fatigue jacket (not camo) for real 60's/70's style.

If you're using actually old vintage, not just old looking leather gear, you might look into getting them "blocked" by an experienced leather shop. renewing the natural oil in the leather and slightly stretching it. I've had it happen to some of my spare leathers. Leave them hanging, unused long enough, they shrink.

None of my gear is vintage, but my current set looks old. Had to match the vibe of my old-ish harley. Its a 2004, but it looks like it stepped through time. Its not on my channel yet. for gear: I have an old-looking new leather jacket. I love it. I also have M1 Moto 508 gloves (got them recently) they look like vintage leathers but are lined with kevlar on the inside. I have Knox Brighton Jeans. they are denim on the outside lined with kevlar on the inside. They are pretty nice in the cold. My boots are a leather set of TCX motorcycle boots. Only thing I am mising is the open-face helmet and a set of goggles. I think I will try to snag some vintage goggles, the ones you got look rad! Awesome video! I love seeing all your stuff on vintage bikes! It was cool seeing the old gear to. Maybe see if you can find another vintage jacket that fits you.

I'm all fore open face helmet's, have several, both open and closed. But new ones. I actually feel safer in open face helmets do to better visibility, and actually have one close to the one you have in the end, a vintage looking closed helmet with a big visor that I really like. If you like the goggles, search on Halcyon classic parts, they have awesome vintage looking leather googgles!👍 About the boots, there are some really nice new laced vintage looking boots with protection, i have a pair of TCX X-blend that I love.

I started riding around '76. Gold flake helmet with a flip up amber bubble visor. Worked great! But gear then compared to today - sucked. You can get modern gear that looks vintage - but made to modern standards. Like jeans - you can get riding jeans with built in protection. Your current jeans, I've crash tested and they don't hold up.

My vintage outfit: I had gauntlets sewn onto my gloves, am wearing a long brown leather jacket with a protective underjacket and brown leather breeches with protective underlayers. The boots are brown vintage boots but with reinforcements on the toes, heels and ankles. I didn't compromise on the helmet, it's a Bell Bullit. When I take it off I'm wearing a Stetson "Brooklyn" leather cap.

Hey man. If you want a proper leather jacket from back in the day look for Brooks jackets. They made a pretty nice Cafe Racer in nice thick steerhide leather, or some vintage horsehide ones. Same for the thicker Schott Perfectos like a 613 and stuff. Greetings

Back then I rode my Bultaco (my only transportation) on the road with it's MX knobbies at 80 with no helmet. So you don't really need that helmet if you want to be authentic. Remember to wear a white T-shirt under the jacket.

Still have the Lewis Leathers gloves & boots from the '60's, threw away the Bronx jacket and jet helmet - they had become decrepit. The flying googles were nice and comfortable - they disappeared along the way. The boots have leather soles with steel heel and toe plates, slide nicely over the asphalt. Trundle around on a big bore GS1000 from time to time, it has a great sound.

yes, the short length of the jacket is normal for vintage jackets due to the high rise of jeans & trousers of the day

I had a lot of OG gear going back as far as my collection went 47 bikes from the 40s to the 90s but when I got ill & couldn't walk I got the arse & sold them all bar the 1971 Suzuki GT380 that I gave to my beautiful wife SuperNurse, she was having none of that "you may never walk again nonsense", she gave me a month to sulk then put me through the hardest 5 months of my life, but I was walking again, kind of, 2 years more & I was riding, not in the same way or even the same bikes but riding is riding & I took what was going. I still had some old stuff but it's pretty substandard to what we have now, so my kids got me some "Reproduction" gear, & it looks "Legit" even next to the OG but it is worlds apart in safety, I'm in the UK & the police stop virtually everybody as soon as your tyre hits the road, I'm pretty sure it's a law now that you have to be fined for something if your name begins with a letter, so everything needs the right stickers, I've only had 2 accidents on the road(both non-fault) in my 46 years of riding track & road but Never say Never right. I have started building another collection but it's stuff from the 80/90s although I got back my 1972 Suzuki GT750, I am currently loving the 2 stroke vibe riding my Suzuki Gamma RGV500 & beating all those "LitreBike" riders that are frightened of their own bikes, a year or two on something like yours would improve their riding no end, it should be compulsory. stay safe, that jacket looks like a woman's.

II have always been the bike. The motor has always been in my head. So I would go to the motorcycle shops hang around pick brochures, the best ones I have are from Harley Davidson 1965 they always had the best gear. By todays standard it is poor at best. I still have my motorcycle jacket from 1970 I put it in a shadow box with my last bikes license plate. Thinking about it I have to agree with Jay Leno. When he ride old bike he where's new gear, the bikes do not stop fast and you can still get into a lot of trouble. Thank you for the trip done memory lane.

As someone who also likes building model motorcycles, I’m really curious about that model from the first few seconds of the video you were painting with the little testors bottles. Is that an old heller or Tamiya model?? Edit: Wait jk I just found your video on this with the Triumph diecast model and I’m assuming that’s the same thing!

In my opinion. People spend so much time money & effort restoring bike to how they were in the day. But ruin the whole thing by riding them in " modern gear" it looks totally wrong. The true feeling of riding a period motorcycle is lost, unless as near to period attire worn. One thing is for certain. Period jackets especially are tiny. We must have been stick insects back then. I always ride my classics dressed to suit. As for preoccupied by safety. Hell, if i was that safety conscious. I would have never gone near a motorcycle!

I definitely like gear with a vintage vibe to it...but not actually vintage. I don't like the idea of riding my 60's bike wearing a helmet that makes me look like a character in the video game Halo. I've been wearing a Torc T-1 Retro full face, which looks very 70's. I love it, but after 3 years of riding I decided to step up and spend a little more money on a helmet. I switched to the Arai Regent X, which cost 3 times as much as the Torc helmet, but has a higher safety rating. I can definitely tell the difference, the Torc is comfortable but the Arai feels like it'll have more protection if I ever go down. It still has a little bit of a vintage vibe.

Love you channel, content and commentary. I’d just buy the newer safety rated “retro” looking gear, then just make it “vintage” with honest wear. Loose the skinny jeans, just buy some Levi’s 501’s and rock on…again make sure you wear them out, try not to look like some millennial espresso drinking dude. For retro style gloves, look at the “Srkcycles” YT channel, he sells some gloves that are modern but look retro. Keep up the good vids…

Interesting experiment. But not really that fair to take kit from the 60's and judge it now. I mean, if the subject wasn't motorcycling, if it was, I dunno, sex? Would you take an original teenager from the 60's and judge her now?🤣🤣 Jeans? Yeah, I'm from the 80's and jeans even then were SO much better, thicker & more substantial than the cheap sh1t from even the top brands now. Jacket? You say "leather's leather right?" Yes, but I have a top quality jacket that's been in the family from new in mid 80's & yes I ride in it. But - if I go down it's not the leather that worries me, it's the stitching - i reckon the jacket would probably just come apart in a slide. I wear it anyway coz it feels lovely, looks great and the leather is of a quality you just do not get these days (yay for progress). 50 year old helmet? Nope.

Those new gloves look unsafe. Looks like there not on tight of have wrist straps and the first thing you'll lose in a crash. Also, savety is not the only thing you give up wenn you where 50 year old stuff, comfort is a factor too, but you found that out, didn't you? You didn't need to buy all that stuff to find that out, you could have just asked a vintage person, like me. Do you think I'd ever go back to wearing that crap? come on.

Nice one, Bart. Love the old gear. Safety third, dude. If one more cretin normie tells me to “be safe”, 🙄 I swear, I’m gonna punch them in the throat. I dunno, maybe I’m weird and/or superstitious, but when I’m going out for a ride, and someone tells me to “be safe”, I take it as a kind of curse. Like, please do not tell me to be safe! As if I didn’t know there were stoned idiots driving around out there looking at their goddamn phone. Besides that, people are not looking out for bikes, so they simply do not see you. Yes, it’s more dangerous than driving a car, but it’s also way more fun. Life is not safe. Contrary to what a bunch of Silicon Valley DWEEBS would like to believe, ain’t no one living for ever.
