I've been watching this channel since it first started-- like a lot of others I followed Hoovie here and I've never been disappointed. I know a lot of folks will give The Wizard some grief about buying a vehicle that you know he will advise you NOT to buy in a few years, but his reasoning makes a lot of sense. First, Mrs. Wizard likes the car. Nothing else would matter if she didn't-- it would not even be an option. Second, he never has to turn a wrench on the Defender. One thing I've learned watching the channel is that neither of the Wizards keep a vehicle for a long time. Four years is stretching things, and by the time the warranty is up Mrs. Wizard will probably be ready for the next great vehicle that comes along. They will probably never test this vehicle's capabilities off-road, but they will be confident that it will go anywhere they want it to. And considering that the weather in Kansas can get pretty rough in winter I'm sure that it will be a safe and sure way to get around. So, congrats on the new car, Jennie! And kudos to you, David!

I used to set up tax deductible retirement plans for businesses. At year end my biggest competition was often a monster truck/SUV. Either way they got a six figure tax deduction, one was saving and investing the funds, the other was dumping money a depreciating asset. I would suggest to them to consider the vehicle if, and only if, they actually needed it, not just for the tax deduction. Lots of prospects went for the truck. SMH.

People who've heard bad experiences from other people (who buy a 120 grand Range Rover at 10 years old with 140k for $15) then pass on their 'knowledge' to someine buying a completely different model under warranty. One other friendly fellow 90 owner tip, the windshields are more vertical and prone to chips and cracks. Tyler Potter put me onto a local shop here in Wichita Andrew Holder who does PPF and detail work, he put a clear protective film on the windshields of my Bronco as well as my Defender 90. Might be worth looking into for your Defender as well. The OE glass for a defender runs around $2k, worth protecting IMO. Or at least trying to protect it.

He does usually say "buy a Toyota" though. Of course when it's a brand new car, if it breaks down the only thing you spend is time and hassle, not money. And most new cars from any brand are usually fairly reliable during the warranty period. But when the car is 5 or 20 or 15 years old and has 100,000 miles or more, yeah, he's a Toyota man 100%. Frankly, every honest mechanic is. The difference between Toyota and almost all other brands, even other Japanese brands (except maybe Honda) in terms of reliability is obvious.

These new Toyotas and Hondas aren't as great as you're making them out to be. I myself have had both fail on me and they were each only 2 or 3 years old when they failed. They were maintained by a shop or the dealer too because they were fleet vehicles. A Scion(Toyota) XB and Honda HRV. The Scion burned so much oil after 100k miles that it ran the sump dry and seized the motor around 136k miles and this was within it's 5k oil change interval too. Go look up "Toyota 2AZFE oil burning" for more info. The Honda HRV had the CVT transmission fail on a busy freeway at 65k miles. It got replaced and later on an electrical issue bricked the car. Then while driving on the freeway again, a belt drive pulley exploded because it's plastic crap and stranded me again. One of my buddies has a 2018 Tacoma that's strictly dealer maintained and he had a head gasket failure. Cylinder #3 was flooded with coolant and hydro locked his engine which ben the connecting rod. It's out of warranty and the dealer wants $9k to replace his engine that only had 75k miles. Hahahaha, don't give us that "Toyota reliability, Honda good too" crap, bub. My buddy is so invested in the Toyota Reliability cult that he wants to buy a new Lexus GX550 with that garbage turbo engine Toyota is using. I told him "hey, it's your money but I wouldn't buy any new Toyota crap, look what your dealing with now and this is an older "reliable" Toyota" hehe you can't help some people....

Completely different setup for a different purpose. Those engines came with crank-driven superchargers standard to take advantageof the high octane gas. The turbo was added to retain power output at higher altitudes. They were huge and were optimized for 75% throttle or above. The Defender is set up with a big turbo to allow the 3.0 to have enough power to make a 5k pound car feel peppy, and the electric supercharger to mask the turbo lag without robbing power from the crankshaft.

I was implying that this configuration was in use over 80 years ago . The difference is the LR supercharger is driven by an electric motor controlled by the ECM. Superchargers rob horsepower when they are driven off of the crankshaft especially with a small displacement engine. The backup turbo cancels out those power losses.This configuration allowed WW2 planes to have great performance at altitudes at over 30 thousand feet.😊
@stacymcmahon453
@stacymcmahon453 Ай бұрын
@@jeffreycler495 Right, but what I was focusing on was the different purpose. Aircraft engines spend basically all their operating hours at power levels above 75%, while cars spend most of theirs below 25% Aircraft put the throttle to 75+ and leave it there, while cars are always slowing/stopping and accelerating, with the acceleration often being only to around 40-50mph, which takes nowhere near the full power output. Most cars could do most of their driving (and did, in the old days) with an engine under 100hp. If you could take the motor from, say, a P-47 and put it in a car, you would experience ridiculous turbo lag, because it's set up to run at or near max throttle, regardless of having both a supercharger and turbocharger. Big turbos mean big lag. The LR's motor is set up with the electric blower to fill in the output gap until its big turbo spools up, so that it can have that big turbo without the lag. It's a pretty slick solution (though not as slick as 'adding lightness' to the car would have been) but is there for a different reason, and with a different configuration, than the WW2 airplane engines.

Bought a three year JLR warranty to go with it. It lacks head-up display and at this age the Apple CarPlay needs the phone to be tethered by cable and the two screens are more laggy than the current Pivi-Pro system. Massive saving compared to a new model today but my one is immaculate and If I didn’t know different I would assume it to be new. It has actually covered 50,000 miles but I will not do a high mileage with it, probably about 8000 miles annually. It has new Pirelli 21” tyres and an electronically deployable trailer hitch and running boards, massaging heated and cooled fully electric luxury seats. It will have cost £100,000UK new but I bought it with the warranty for less than half that. A new current model with a similar spec, which will have four wheel steering, costs UK£130,000

The starter alternator combo is pretty standard for these 48 volt mild hybrids. It's all the same concepts as you see on a traditional hybrid just scaled down to reduce cost and let them do everything through the v belt as a bolt on system to a more or less conventional drivetrain. The alternator is doing energy recovery during braking and probably providing some initial torque when accelerating from a stop. IIRC it's only like a 10 to 15% increase in fuel economy but it's also way less expensive than a full hybrid system. In this instance it also gives them a power source for the electric supercharger. What I'm curious about is does it do anything else with the 48 volt bus like an electric ac compressor or power steering? Edit: I really like these. I'm a sucker for a 2 door suv and I love small ish suv's with significant towing capacity.

These cars require a bit of love somet8mes..good luck! Lancia, VW and Volvo came with twin charged (turbo and supercharger) engines. Tesla uses the same split lower arm front suspension. A 1997 Prius has no starter either.

I don't think any Toyota hybrid synergy drive vehicles have a traditional starter. They use the motor/generator. I believe the Ram pickups with the (very problematic) etorque system also lack a traditional starter.

Will it require 48 volts jump starter?
@Hayes-x2x
@Hayes-x2x Ай бұрын
There’s a 48v BISG (belt integrated starter generator) that’s what starts the engine when you start stop and also a 12v traditional starter for initial startup and for backup. Most people don’t even know they are driving a hybrid.

@@Hayes-x2x but Car wizard says there's no traditional starter in this vehicle. So are you sure about backup starter. Also as per information from this video there is 48 volts battery system which runs electric supercharger and alternator / starter thing. Mrs. Car wizard did start the vehicle and it started immediately and didn't sound like a traditional starter.

@@meetv7700The person who replied to your comment is correct. Hybrids already use a 48 V system with a step down to 12 V incase of needing to be jump started. That’s the role of the DC/DC converter incase the 48 V system goes down.

Volvo has a similar "super-turbo" 4 cylinder under the hood for years now. This setup reminds me of the 1990's Toyota Supra and Mazda RX-7 with their sequential twin turbo setups. One smaller turbo that spools quickly for low RPM power then a bigger turbo that spools slower but really sings in the high rpm range, designed for zero turbo lag, flat torque curve, instant throttle response.

You bought her one because it’s a nice vehicle and you’re a mechanic (something definitely needed with this vehicle)!
