I remember the speed we drove was the speed at which traffic moved. I don’t recall ever being passed. Driving slow past house parties from neighboring high schools was always pretty funny. If you are in the market for a 2013-2019 Taurus P.I., make sure that the water pump has been replaced, as there is a design defect on Ford's 3.5 and 3.7 liter engines which result in water pump failure and ultimately engine damage.

Being it a State police, officers need to communicate with their department, local Sheriff and local police. In some areas more than 1 county or city. Most of their radios are *high power* radios and when Mic button is pressed it gets very *hot* very quick. 2. Many of the Crown Vics were sold for use with the cage for use as taxi cabs, but usually they took the spot lights off the car the strobes in the grille were gone etc, the push bar is usually left on the car. The spot lights may be a state by state law. I've heard that NJ for instance, if the spotlight was on the car to pass state inspection the wire had to be cut and visibly cut to pass at that, now alot of states are just worried about emissions and that's all, so that maybe out of the window now. I know that sometimes the owner operators have 1 or 2 spotlights on the tractor which is a benefit if your lost or looking for a street at night or happen upon an accident etc.

I have been driving these vehicles for years. Ford was my client and I would get the fleet demo versions with about 1000 miles on them. Right now I have a 2016 Taurus Police Special and a 2020 Police Responder Hybrid, both from new. The tray in the trunk held the 'chip' that was the control head for the electronics, lights, sirens, etc. The fan in the trunk is to maintain the temperature in the trunk for the electronics. The power cables run under that centre plate in the cabin to under the hood for power. The police consoles from the Crown Victorias will fit in this car. they are very functional and can be set up in different ways that will work for you. The exhaust is after market and probably by the police department because they didn't want to put the money into a full replacement. Since they would be selling it off before it would any further issues they wouldn't see a problem. Due to the amount that police idle these vehicles they were burning out the catalytic converters. They are built to run with the converter. There is a lot more to these cars than you may realize if you haven't owned one before. Enjoy the car, they are a lot of fun.

the slide out tray is where the radio and the emergency light and video equipment is placed. Yes that is a cooling fan for the police equipment that is in the tray. The fan vents the heat into the back seat (crazy huh). The backseat is comfortable because the barrier has been removed that is between the front seat and the back. The big plus about owning a former police car is that you get a strong engine and transmission, drive train, electrical system, plus pursuit tires.

Interesting. Is there anyway to tell the difference? I think the bigger issue rather than being run into the ground is that you can easily double or more their mileage from idle hours and I'm pretty damn sure idling is not good for any car all the time.

Just FYI - I have 2013 Explorer Interceptor - and I get like 9mpg on E85 flex fuel. When you run regular gas - its more expensive - but better mpg as well. The 11mpg was from running E85 FLEXFUEL. I also have 3.7L. I was hoping yours is 3.5L EcoBEAST. You're transmission has a "Pursuit" Mode - when you hit the brakes really hard - your shifts will become aggressive (high rpm) - try it out.

I just sold my 2013 Police Interceptor Ford Taurus. I put it on the lawn and it sold in less then 3 hours. I had more fun with this car then any other car I have owned. They are such nice cars and they feel like a machine when you drive them....Smooth, Fast, and just fun to drive. I will never be able to fun one as nice as the one I sold. My car was from North Carolina and belonged to one person who took it home every night. The only thing that was taken out of my car was the Two way Radio. It had everything else. When I came home from work at night, I would pull into my drive way and turn on the blue lights....! That car was like a christmas tree....I had the car for over one year and never got stopped. I would drive by a cop and he would wave to me. Everyone thought that was a patrol car under cover. When I got on hwy 85 in the morning.....NO ONE would pass that car...everyone stayed behind me. I will sure miss that car....my car had 107K miles on it and drove like a new car.

My understanding is that "Certified Calibrated" means that from factory that the Ford Speedometer is calibrated to a certified standard for speed and timing (meaning the DOT might say 97% accuracy is the acceptable personal vehicle inspection standard, however for speed enforcement the tolerance is lets say 99%). I believe it also means that the speed is certified to 1mph increments. So while pacing, the distance between 34 to 35 miles per hour would be the same as 54 to 55 mph. Some speedometers could lose accuracy in certain speed ranges. I you were to have an inaccuracy at low speed, this could be multiplied as you reach higher speeds. While on patrol an officer can pace a vehicle, following said vehicle for a set distance and matching the speedometer to that of the vehicle being followed. Doing this, they can identify how fast the lead vehicle is going and testify that the vehicle is speeding. In most states, the "Certified Calibrated" is nothing more than fancy verbiage. A special technician will come in periodically and make sure that the all speed and timing equipment is still maintaining accuracy per the set standard (may vary by state). This is important for traffic enforcement as attorneys will fight the accuracy of the timing device as well as the training of the officer. I don't know if the certified designation means that the speedometer software is open from the factory so that the technician can make changes without using the Ford Scan Tool? Outside of that, it doesn't mean that your other vehicle is any less accurate. It just means that when that Police Interceptor was built and had all of the upgrades added by Ford, that the speedometer was tested and accurate with the big brakes, cross brace, extra racks, miles of wiring, and additional lighting.
@sanderrambelje4 жыл бұрын
I think you're right. Also, regular passenger vehicles are calibrated (even with a wider margin it's still calibrated) to display a slightly higher speed than actual (GPS) speed, so that you're always on the safe side with regard to speed limits. Usually this difference increases at higher speeds, so it may display 32 mph when travelling 30 and 79 when doing 75. Law enforcement on the other hand should of course know the exact speed.
@rblackvalley4 жыл бұрын

5:04 The X-brace under the back seat and in the trunk actually IS factory-installed and is what gives the PIs the 75-mph rear collision rating. Regular Taurus sedans (and Explorers) don’t have that but all Ford Police Interceptors do have it from the factory. Also, the tray in the trunk was for remote-mounted radios. Nice find though!

A fun little thing about the crown Vic interceptors is they actually have a 90MPH rating for front AND back collisions (at least from my local department) though they don’t have all this fancy stuff this fella has! My girlfriend bought a 2009 Crown Vic early in 2020 from a civilian who had bought it at auction from the Univ. of Arizona PD and used it for awhile. She bought it without consulting me (typical) and didn't ask enough questions of the seller about it, but was told it was NOT an interceptor. The car drives OK, but I'd like to get its service history and a Ford manual for it. Should we go to UAPD and make a public records request for its full history? Should we go to the facility that maintained it? Since it was a college cop car, I doubt it was involved in many hard chases, but Tucson, AZ is hot as hell 6-8 months a year. Since it's purportedly not an interceptor, I wonder if it was driven only by supervisory cops for lighter use. The odometer appears to have turned over at 100,000 miles at least, but I can't determine if it exceeded 200,000. Can anyone advise me of the best way to get the full service record and any special features and benefits of this car without running myself ragged in the process? Just reply on You Tube. TX a lot!!!
