The model 535 became the 7300. When this combine first came out it was a honey of a machine as it walked circles around the Massey Ferguson 300 of the day plus the sample was the best with very little loss out the back. Cockshutt had the best patent of the day in thrashing mechanism plus the best and easiest adjustment to accommodate different crops and conditions. This was such a great machine it just made sense for White to pick it to be be relabeled as the 7300 for the small farmer who had 50 to 100 acres of crop to harvest in the 1970s and 1980s. Brandford Ontario’s pinnacle of success was the White 9700 Axial Flow combine which came out in 1979 in conjunction with the 8900 in 1979. The two were the largest combines in the world in 1979 ( one conventional and one rotary). John Deere was tripping over their own shoe laces to buy the 9700 technology whenever White was filing chapter eleven however the Ontario government (who had provided a $300 million loan guarantee to White to keep them afloat) said no to John Deere but did approve the Massey (Varity Corp.) purchase of the White 9700 combine. There wasn’t any combine capacity measuring equipment available at the time to properly measure the capability of the 9700. It came out with a 26 foot grain head at the time it could of handled a 35 foot header platform as was determine later when they had the proper testing facilities to determine that. That 9700 was away ahead of its time. Their are a number of them still running today

When I hear a 7300 with the 318 it reminds me of the neighbor growing up he had one with a cherry bomb glass pack for a stack I can still remember that sound of him revving it up to this day!

My father in law bought a 7600 in the early 80’s 4 row wide corn head and 13’ bean head. The thing would eat corn as fast as you could feed it. That old Chrysler just a barking. I know we replaced every belt & bearing on that thing over the years. We kept the drive wheels and tires off it. And it went to the scrap yard unfortunately.

Yeah, a lot of the combines met that fate just because they’re so hard to store. As soon as they were obsolete people got rid of them.

First, if you would have spoken in rooster and sheep, the combine would have started faster. Second, it's my luck to plug up the combine before even starting it. Better check the straw walker crank. Don't want to break it. I had to patch my grain pan too. Welded I think 1/8 flat stock staggered for a patch.

I'm with you. You made headway and it ran and drove. You will get it back in shape so you can play with it. Might be next year before you get to play, but that gives you plenty of time. I don't think some people understand that some of your machinery is more like toys rather than how you make your living. It's nice that you try to use some of it for something. It helps keep it in running condition..and it is fun to play with, lol. Keep up the good work and I'll see you in the next one.

I totally understand your situation Ross ! 100 plus bearings, 20 belts ( kinda) and a whole lot of time just to make it happen. Got one sitting in the yard with hydraulic issues ( gets extremely hot ) waiting on tech manual. Plus the new variety produce more than the ole combine want to handle.

Well Ross, we all know combines are a never ending work in progress. But the biggest detriment to them is sitting out side in the weather. I too love them and have saved a few oldsters from the scrap. Did find a few pull types and an old MF 82 and a MM model S self propelled from the early 50s. The model 18 Oliver is like the one the family had back in the day. I always felt that the 18 was likely one of the best pull types on the market at the time. These are in the dry and I have used them in the past, except for the old MM. It is in a similar condition to your 7300, needs a bunch of love. Like you, my problem is getting time to do all the things I want and still make a living!

With all the big combines that are in the field today it is amazing that crops were gathered and people were fed with combines of that size for a lot of years. Didn't know anyone put a small V8 engine in those or any other combine. Usually 4 or 6 cylinder inlines were used. I really enjoy your videos but I have to say you are one of the most long suffering folks I think I have ever seen. Seems it is always something that keeps you down but you keep a good attitude and always get it done.

Combines can be a real adventure owing to the number of shafts, bearings, belts, chains, etc. Maybe with a little(lot) of parts swapping several can become one. Amazing how these critters transform from useable harvesting machines to salvage yard relics that become donor machines. Some aren't very old due to fire damage, etc.

Your bad luck explains where our Black Cat goes when it is outside. It likes Purina cat food so send it back home well fed. Getting combines ready to go for the harvest was always a profitable thing for the dealers. Sorry that you do not get to run that unit with the header row spacing not matching the rows. The 7300 was definitely a 4 row capable combine. Keep up the entertaining videos.

Hi Thanks for the updates. Combines are like boats it don't matter how old they are they are all still money pits if you own 1 or more, new ones really aren't any better either with wear and breakdowns . I can only imagine what the Oliver grain pans like to swap after the one in our 750 Massey rotted out and the frame broke in it this harvest. That wasn't any fun at all, and we had a hard time finding a used one that was better than the one we had. in the end we found one that wasn't broke in half and had less holes in and patched it. It seems like there are loads of the Masseys still working around Canada but we're loosing all our local used parts yards . so we either buy another one if it's any better, or change brands and head to a 77 or 8820 Deere with way better availability locally , but that's gonna hurt as we like the Massey too much. Take care.

Hey Ross, I noticed below the gas tank, the ball bearing with the flanges on the inside of the combine. Now I know where MF got that idea from! I think the engineers met every morning for breakfast and dresm up the idea of the day to make a farmer/mechanics day harder! That day they decided to put the flanges on the inside so when the most simple, and easiest bearing on the combine to get to, is a 2 day job to replace! 😢

Combines are cool, but they're one-function machines. It's not like you're going to be using it to haul, till, plow snow, etc. And harvest time doesn't give a guy much time to fool around with repairs. You're usually in a time crunch to get the crops in before it rains, snows, etc. Ain't nobody got time for that. 😯
