Ok ok this is totally a click bait title. I admit it! But this is a McLaren! Well, sort of. Let me explain! This is my 1990 Pontiac Turbo Grand Prix, also known as the ASC/McLaren edition.
Look at this thing-it just oozes 1990s radness. It also doesn't stop very well. Join me as we learn about this obscure 90s GM product and what is required to bring it back to its former glory!

You need to keep off the roads with brakes like that. Even if you'd wished the thing wouldn't have stopped if someone or a dog had jumped out in front of you. Just for filming yourself driving on public roads you can be fined !!! Why don't you just buy every car Hoovie does ? Your video and comments is a copy paste of his for this car.

I love that you were able to find an early W-body with an interior that isn't trashed. Then again you are in Southern California, but dang that era GM wasn't known for their interior build quality.

I know right? I have a hunch that many original TGP owners took good care of their cars. It was a significant price jump from the base model to the Turbo, and I'd bet most buyers knew the ASC/McLaren connection was something special. Because of that I'd guess a lot of these were garaged.
@WookieDrives
@WookieDrives 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Road yeah they were certainly special enough and I'd imagine they had a high enough price tag over a normal GP that I can see that. I just find it awesome seeing an old W-boby that the clear isn't peeling, rust holes in the quarters, dash is breaking apart, buttons work, and seats aren't torn.

My father had a 96 gtp. I remember these 3.4 v6 engines made a very unique rumble almost like a v8. Always wanted to know what it felt like to drive one of these as I used to own the o7 base grand prix with the 3.8 that put out 200 hp. I wonder if the 90-96 gtp 3.4 engine felt any slower or quicker than the 3.8. I read that the 96 gtp put out around 240 hp.

My first car, in 1979 was a 1973 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ 455. Over the years, I'd had at least 13 Grand Prix (along with some GTO's, Firebirds and a get Fiero). I was a Pontiac guy for years. I seriously thought about buying a new 90 TGP as my first new car. I just couldn't take the plastic body clad. Looking back, I should have bought one. They were cool, inside.

I had a 4 door Grand Prix STE with the dual cam 3.4 n the 5 speed manual trans. Loved it. Cranked out 210 hp stock and would roast the tires if you dumped the clutch. Needless to say it only took about a year before my idiotic 20 yr old self burnt up the clutch. It was pretty funny to see peoples jaws drop seeing that 4 door sedan roasting the front tires all through 1st then chirping 2nd lmao.. With the DIC and HUD systems matched up with everything else it was definetly a cool car for its time. The mechanic at the dealership was shocked as could be when i brought it in to price out the clutch. Said it was the 1st time he had seen a manual in the 4 door sedan. And the clutch according to him was in his words racing quality hense the $1300 estimate. Ahh i wish i would've just went to a local shop but i traded it in on another vehicle instead.. Damn i miss that car... Good times...

My wife was recently looking through family photos from the 90s.. One of them was a random photo of a parking lot in Tennessee.. There.. in the corner of the picture was the rear of a car.. Squared off with a slight wide body and cool faded taillights. Next photo was a from a different side of the lot with a side view of the same car.. I see that there's door handles on the window pillar.. Hmm.. This things cool. After a quick Google search I figure out it's one of these.. and now I'm fucking drooling over them. I need one in my life. I love everything about the car.

Thanks again for all of your work, Ethan! It sounds like we may have similar sentiments in terms of preferred cars over the course of life, to date. I was, and remain, primarily a Japanese car enthusiast, as I've favored reliability over nearly any other consideration through the years. Because of that, especially for cars of the 70's/80's/90's, I pretty much ignored American manufacturers, and thus never knew this Pontiac even existed. I must say, especially in the context of what was available in the early 90's, this is actually rather cool, especially in terms of the gadgetry and buttons therein (I'm in IT, and thus love tech). We wish you well in any work done, and urge you to remain safe-- Indeed, looks rather harrowing to drive in the car's present state!
@HelloRoad
@HelloRoad 6 жыл бұрын
A year ago I didn't know this car existed either! I saw one come up on Bring A Trailer and it piqued my interest. At $1000 I couldn't pass it up. Certain American manufacturers may have deserved their bad rap when it came to reliability in the 80s/90s, but there were a few gems like this one where they were pushing the envelope, in both performance and features!

I'm starting to have parts problems with my 6th gen. all of the odd ball parts you can only get new old stock or junkyard. the rocker covers and lower door moldings for an example. the abs module (they fail when you don't change out the fluid at least every 3 years) which these 6th gens are common for no maintenance. last example is the Bose audio system has special duel coiled 6x9s in the back that can't be replaced. a 15 year old factory speaker.... The 86 & 87 Turbo Buicks have a Powermaster brake system that looks similar minus the ABS. Most Buick guys swap over to a standard vacuum brake system. You need the master cylinder, vacuum resivoir, vacuum block with an extra port to run a vacuum line to the resivoir and a brake pedal from vacuum brake equipped car. The powermaster brake pedal doesn't have as much leverage as the vacuum brake pedal does as it requires less force for the same braking power. When you have a failure on a Powermaster system it's super sketchy as you don't have as much pedal leverage. I had a failure on my 86 Regal T-type and I drove around like that for a while. I wonder if any of these would apply to your ASC McLaren Turbo Grand Prix.
@HelloRoad
@HelloRoad 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. I do think some of this would apply to my TGP. Haven't figured out exactly what parts I need but this is a good starting point. I believe the TGP only has three brake lines (one goes to both back wheels) so I may also need to run new brake lines. And yes my brakes are super sketchy as is!

Hello Road No worries. I am curious to see if the accumulator bowls are interchangeable. This car is only 3 years newer than the oldest Turbo Buick. It’s possible they could have used something already existing from the GM parts bin. If they are Kirban Performance makes a replacement for the Turbo Regals. Here is the link below. www.kirbanperformance.com/product/318/Reproduction+BRAKE+ACCUMULATOR+BOWL+PART+6697+For+1985-1986+1987+Buick+Regal+Grand+National+Turbo+T+T-Type+GNX.html

Hello Road That's a good call. I am wondering if could swap the vacuum brake set up from a non turbo Grand Prix of a similar year and call it good. The ABS probably adds to the complexity. If you were to simply swap the brake pedal it would give more leverage. Probably not ideal as it would still be like driving a manual brake car of the 60's but it would be better than now. If you were to fix your existing brake system and have the brake pedal from a vacuum brake system it will probably be hyper sensitive. This of course if it follows the same path as the Turbo Buick. It sounds like it would with the components it has. Someone on here has to be be a GM tech with more knowledge than me.

Funny video. With the immediate admission that it's a clickbait title and the overview of McLaren's history and subsequent involvement in the design of this car, it makes the 'clickbait' title seem not so 'clickbait-y' after all. The interior is impressive for 1990 and the fact that you admitted that the car is unregistered and not entirely safe to drive (yet you drive it anyway) is awesome. More people should have this much guts.

Watching this has led me to this realise, no.1, why is has ‘ABS’ so pronounced on the back of it, & no.2 maybe why my brakes seem to take a sometimes scary amount of foot pressure to pull the old girl up!

Reason why I got rid of my 1990. Wouldn't have thought they could bring value. The brake booster was leaking brake fluid into exhaust and leaving a smoke screen lol. And a place in Wyoming rebuilt them but very pricey. I had mine back in 2004.

Everyone who got these or the aero performance package on the SE/GT, or the full GTP package would scrape all the paint off the front chin spoiler and break the fog lights the first time they encountered the angle of a hill.

I loved this, and the GTP and grand prix STE from 90-93. The GTP had a newer version of the mostly useless but cool compass in the middle. I think the 3.4 V6 had fatal flaws in almost all of them, so stay away from the 3.4 Grand Prix STE and GTP. It’s a shame. So many cool buttons, cladding, black cross hatching on the lights, the steering wheel buttons, and the useless but cool rear buckets! They also had the neatest exhaust note with the rectangular finishers.

Having owned both a TGP and an early 80s Porsche 928, they are both comparable. The 928 was manual which was nice but this TGP, when in good condition, does everything that the 928 did. Good luck !

@@HelloRoad I've owned 2 TGPs, one Red with no sunroof and one Black with sunroof. I know quite a bit about these cars that no one is talking about - including fixes for the turbo, brakes and suspension. I knew a person on the McLaren project who explained a lot of finer details that I didn't know. I'm not sure about the 90s (I had two 89s) but the 89s had the signatures of everyone on the project carved into the back of the glovebox. The final inspector signed the radiator support which mine had but most people washed off (it just wipes away). The car was part of the Goodyear GT+4 promotion, the production number was actually limited by the number of good 2.8 liter engines that GM sent. Oh yeah, this car also "invented" the 3.1 V6. It's ridiculous how it happened, but I could explain if you're interested. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer !

Let me know if you find one of those cars for parts because I'm looking for that turbo setup for a Pontiac Aztek! Believe it or not, I will and I mean will make it work! LOL, also did you know you can take the 3.4 liter block out of an Aztec because it has the forged rods and upgrade the Pistons and put it in place of the 3.1 in that Pontiac Grand Am and you could run a bigger turbo in it with no problem, the 3.4 liter Motors that GM makes now have forged internals on their rotating assembly come all you would have to do is change the Pistons up and you would have one mean motor in that car

I don't know why but I kinda like the way that era Grand Prix looks. Not so much the body cladding, but the combination of round and square, along with the subtle fender flares, just gave it a good look. Always liked Pontiac over Chevy, even though much of what Pontiac did was toss some of that body cladding they loved so much on a GM product and called it a day.
@HelloRoad
@HelloRoad 5 жыл бұрын
GM had some nice designs in the early 90s. But you're right, the Pontiac versions usually had a ton of plastic bits tacked on. It's aged pretty well with this TGP, but doesn't really look that good on the later Grand Ams...

@@HelloRoad Mine a (1990 TGP) shorted out two injectors which fried my icm, coil packs, and ecu. also had it run really bad from vacuum leaks before. lots of feet of vacuum hose on them. If you dont know @WBodyTech hes pretty knowledgeable on these cars also! Good luck with everything! Also they have a repair company now for the ABS unit if you're interested. One is BBA Reman. They have a US based business also not just UK. there is another one I'm trying to find in my bookmarks. Starting to have ABS issues myself.

The naturally aspirated models were available with 5-speeds, but the turbos weren't. The "successor" to Turbo 3.1 engine was the 3.4 "Twin Dual cam" V6, which WAS available with a 5-speed.

When you go to the junk yard looking for parts. look for 94-96 GP's, parts should be similar or plug and play. 88-93 GP's parts fit your car, 94-96 GP's have different interior, less body cladding, more reliable parts. Lots of stuff on Ebay for 88-96 GP's
