I'm digging mine a lot. It's in my lap at this very moment. Got mine whenever they came out. It fell from a wall hanger. I wasn't thinking when I hung it up there. As we know, there's not much to grab onto on Tele headstocks! Anyway mine crashed to the floor in between the wall and a 4x12. Everything was fine, but the skunk stripe shifted/buckled inward. Like it would cut slice your thumb. I took it to my tech (luthier too) and he found that the skunk stripe was like a sliver of rosewood. He was amazed, as was I. So it became a much more involved repair as he had to perfectly cut a new piece of rosewood to put in the channel. He did a perfect job, so it's better than new now, albeit with a lighter shade where he sanded it. He obviously sanded off the nitro, so we agreed to just rub some gunstock oil into the maple - a la the very excellent MusicMan necks. Weight relief? I had him cut a belly carve into it, removing 'some' wood, I also had him do the 'smugglers route' under the pickguard. It's quite noticeable. Besides, I had added back a few ozs by replacing the plastic pickguard with a chromed metal one. Perfectly matches the look and height of the control plate. Lastly, I had him take the neck off the tone circuit, as well as to get rid of the out of phase deal.

Love mine, killer axe! But my trusted seller (an amazing luthier also) made me choose about the out/in-phase and I picked up back in. More useful to me. Grat video!!!

The "special tool" is called a screwdriver... It's designed to be adjusted with the neck off. If you want to adjust it with the neck on, that's your choice, but you'll need to buy a (non-Fender) produced tool to do so. Your real issue with it should have been that Fender initially advertised this to buyers as made in the US, but when it came out they decided to hide the serial numbers in the neck pocket because they all start with MX... Made in Mexico.

Nice demo, the only one I have seen with the out-of-phase thing changed. I do think it has a thin sound when out-of-phase and clean, but with distortion it sounds good. What I would do is put a push-pull pot or a 5-way blade switch so you could have both options. IIRC, J's '58 is stock, but the bridge pickup had been replaced with one from earlier in the '50's and the pickups are modeled after the ones in his Tele. I agree, the pickups sound great.

I’m a telecaster guy and a Dinosaur Jr. fan, I am not into the out of phase sound either but I love the bigger necks now since I bought my 50’s road worn Telecaster. I’d definitely buy this but I am also thinking about the Vintera 50’s telecaster too, I’m torn.

​@@md770 "tear apart"? It's two screws and light soldering. Pickups aren't out of phase, it's the wiring. It's a thing some are in to. I'm not into it myself so mine's corrected to regular neck/bridge setting. I can get the same basic tone with a clocked wah.

I found it a bit dark so i took both pots out for push pull A500K's. Used the tone push pull to switch between inverted and regular phased parralels and used the volume push pull to engage a treble bleed consisting of a 180K with a 1nF cap in parallel over the volume pot. For the phase inversion i cut away the connection from one pole of the neck pickup to the shield of the neck pickup and provided a 3th wire on the shield can. It is now a, excellent sounding guitar at all volumes with all my amps.

Still trying to understand how it's "baseball bat thick" when reported at .820-.920... thinner than my 50's Vintera Mod or 60's Vintera Strat. My Ultra Strat -.820 -.890....

Good descriptions and it does sound great! I have one and it’s also terrific sounding, these guitars are deeply resonant and big sounding for a Tele…I’ve owned many Teles, but none that sound exactly like this one. Sorry to hear about the tuner…mine didn’t have that issue, but has a couple of other slight issues. From the 3rd to 7th fret I can feel the ridge of the skunk stripe, it’s a little bit annoying….I might sand it down to get it flush with the neck eventually. Also, I have to keep the action on my high E a bit higher than I prefer because despite the jumbo frets and 9.5 radius, it still frets out too easily on bends past the 15th fret. Maybe a high fret? It’s also a little heavier than I’d prefer at 8 pounds even (I have a bad back and generally search out lighter guitars). Despite all that, the neck feels great, it sounds great and it’s definitely a looker. Thanks for the overview ✌️

you don't get a truss rod tool with fender guitars. i also recommend a real truss rod tool (ie stew mac) as opposed to a large slot screwdriver or phillips. a phillips is worse imo.

Fender copied everything about the guitar including it being out of phase according to J he never tried playing both pickups at once also the finish is actually a gretsch drum finish from the 1970's, he got somone who ran a bike garage to put it on.
