ive had this jazzmaster for a while and loved it. every bit of it, only problem i had is if i use just the neck pickup its extremely quiet but i got that fixed. everyone was whining to me to get a real fender etc even after hearing these are fender quality if not better, so i got an American Professional II telecaster, for about $2000. the jazzmaster is better in every way, sound, playability, comfort, tone, price range, everything. dont listen to other people and buy what YOU like

It’s really odd that people will whine if it doesn’t say “Fender” on your headstock. Like- Squier is made BY fender. And if you can produce good sound on a guitar, you can really play ANYTHING. Regardless of price or quality. Even then. I ordered a J Mascis a couple days ago and i am on EDGE. I need to play and touch this thing. It’s very aesthetically pleasing and just looks gorgeous.

Great review. Very informative. I actually just got the 40th Anniversary JM, as it was on sale at GC for $299. I was completely uneducated on the bridge situation with JM's. The tuners on the Anniversary model also were very cheap and I was looking at having to replace the bridge and tuners. So a brainer to just get the J Mascis version. Your video helped to solidify my decision. Thanks, man!

@@taxationistheft2.0 yeah the stock vibrato and bridge stay in tune great. It’s works best set against the body and not floating though. That’s how mine came setup. You just tighten the metal bar until it’s touching the body. That’s just a mustang vibrato issue though. I eventually bought the Japanese vibrato and it’s basically the same just feels a little smoother. It was only $40 on reverb for the upgrade actually but basically the same other than it says fender on the bridge now. The bridge piece with the saddles that holds the strings I kept stock, I think it’s actually designed better than the Japanese one. I had the classic vibe stratocaster too but I liked the mustang better so I sold the strat

I dropped a set of those pickups in a 335 style guitar. Had to route the cavities and make custom pickup covers for it and the guitar can do everything. Those pickups are insanely underrated. They're not the same as Fender JMs but they're somewhere in between a P90 and a JM. They're fantastic.
@Great-Documentaries
@Great-Documentaries 11 ай бұрын
You say "They're not the same as Fender JMs" as if that's a bad thing! LOL! No Fender pickups are an upgrade to the pickups in this Squier. They may sound different. You may prefer them. But they are NOT better! Just as it is true that these pickups are not an upgrade over Fender pickups. Fender makes NO pickups like these. So comparing them is silly. Either you want this hotter, non-JM sound or you don't. The QUALITY is the same as Lollar, or Lace, or SD or anyone else you can name. Pickups are 1930s technology folks! Don't overthink this!
@DaringDan
@DaringDan 10 ай бұрын
@@Great-Documentaries I didn't say it was a bad thing anywhere in my post. You inferred that. I was merely stating the Squier JM's aren't JM pickups. They're more akin to a p-90. Reread my post. I didn't criticize JMs. I merely said the Squier pickups are underrated.

Have one since 2020, I'm suprised that it's so sought after. I got It cause I really wanted the rhythm circuit, and I preferred it over the Classic Vibe Jazzmaster. Something about the sound of the pickups was a bit brighter and fuller than the Classic Vibe, they sounded pretty similar to me. I'm really conflicted on whether my JM JM is really that good ( like the 800+ resale value suggests ) or this is just another case of over hyping a increasingly rare guitar.

As some people pointed out below, the main drawback of this particular model is the mismatched tune-o-matic bridge they install in the factory, which has the standard Gibson 12" radius. This makes it impossible to properly set up the instrument, which has a 9.5" radius fingerboard. I don't understand how this was overlooked in the design and implementation. Good news is that you can get aftermarket TOM bridges with 9.5" radius, but you really shouldn't have to shell out extra cash to fix such a glaring mistake. I purchased the 40th anniversary Squire JM and replaced all electronics, wiring, applied copper shielding, installed a set of Curtis Novak pups, and Mastery vibrato, bridge, and string tree, strung with 11s Tomastik flats. Hard to put this guitar down once you pick it up.

sorry for the super late reply, but honestly the stock pups are better, have a lot more character to them I'd say And it's funny you bring up locking tuners for this, because I can't find any that are drop in replacements. Biggest issue with the squire mascis is the 9.5” fretboard radius with a 12” radius TOM bridge. Make the low and high E strings sit high. I bought a guild 9.5” TOM bridge from guild and now it plays soooooo much better! Better intonation, action. Now it’s killer!!! Why Fender doesn’t match the radius is beyond me. They have the resources to make them.

@thekipinator7660
@thekipinator7660 Ай бұрын
@@nenadbozic4816 the stock pickups have a different sound, but it’s a very pleasing sound, just warmer and hotter. Adjusting pickup height can tweak this a lot though. I wouldn’t rule out the j mascis for not having the “jazzmaster sound”, I think you’ll be surprised if you get to try it in person. JMs are awesome, but if you’re new to owning them, just be aware that the more “authentic” JMs are very very very bright, and harsh at times. There’s also a noticeably larger amount 60 cycle hum due to the pickups just being so large. The J Mascis doesn’t have these characteristics, it’s a lot warmer and about on par with strat coil hum. They’re a lot of fun, but this is something a lot of people (myself included before I owned 5 over the last year) don’t know off the bat Id try a J Mascis, I think you’ll really dig it. The 40th anniversary models are GREAT too, the necks on those are more comfortable for me than the j mascis necks I’d say. I owned one in desert sand and loved it, but the pickups were super noisy. I think the Oxblood model of the TVL one is absolutely stunning. It's got more typical Jazzmaster pickups, Mustang saddles and the rhythm circuit selector has a proper toggle switch rather than a slide switch. I also like the block inlays and matching headstock. But... it's nearly three times the price. I'd love to hear from anyone that's played both.
@thekipinator7660
@thekipinator7660 5 ай бұрын
I’ve tried both in shops, the tvl is absolutely stunning in person but I personally didn’t find the neck comfortable, it has a 7.25” radius and a very sticky glossy finish, a lot of what I was playing kept choking out. I owned the 40th anniversary for a little bit and it just felt great to play all around, one of the best necks I’ve tried, silky satin finish and a pretty sizeable C shape that fills your hand really nicely with a 9.5” radius, I just didn’t like the pickups and the tuners were a little unstable but that could’ve been something to invest in, and i just didn’t feel like it at the time. Everyone’s got different preferences tho, you could be totally into the opposite of what I am haha, but I just would personally take the 40th anniversary in this scenario, and then maybe invest in some upgrades if you want

@@thekipinator7660 thanks! I’m very unlikely to be able to try either to be honest where I live. That’s put a bit of doubt in my mind about the TVL but I could maybe try and find something with a similar neck and try that. I might just go for whatever I can pick up cheaply in the colour I like (the 40th gold edition in blue with the rosewood fretboard looks nice). It sounds like they’re all great instruments.

I love my jazzmascis, it is my #1. With That said the pickups are P-90's, and not a JM type single coil at all, so if you're looking for that classic sound, this guitar ain't it. Also the bridge is 12" radius, and the neck is 9.5" radius, so I had issues with the low e-string slipping off the neck. I put a mastery bridge on it, plus some other mods, and it is perfect. When I first got it, I lived on the bridge pick up, but now I favor the middle position, plus it's quieter. Remember The rhythm circuit is just the neck pickup, and it's a little louder than when the circuit is off. Adjusting volume and tone knobs is optimum as you can get really clean tele tones all the way up to overdriven SG types of tones. IMO these are the best Chinese guitars for the price point, (500.00) after that it's probably Epiphone custom shop, then, your average S.Korean , each one respectively going up around 400.00 USD

I actually briefly owned the 40th anniversary, feels incredible and plays great, but I found the pickups on those to get really noisy real quick when you add any overdrive/distortion, which is ultimately why I didn't keep it (Didn't feel like changing the pickups on it), but the j mascis takes drive/distortion very well and overall I'd recommend that one cus I wouldn't say it requires any mods However if you're mostly playing clean then the 40th anniversary should be fine, I actually prefer the neck on that one I just didn't really like how the pickups reacted to drive/distortion

JMJM pickups are actually p90s in jazzmaster covers. Check out the pole pieces. They have screw slots in the tops of the pole pieces, and they aren't flat like the regular jazzmaster pickups.* But personally, I like mismatched guitars like that. I'm currently looking at grabbing an HH MIJ Jazzmaster with stoptail/AdjustOmatic. And I currently have an offset telemaster , also (MIJ.). _____________________ *(Just a bit of trivia. This is the best j mascis review. Do you think it was “worth it” to install the upgraded 920d wiring harness?
@thekipinator7660
@thekipinator7660 Ай бұрын
This was probably the most unnecessary upgrade I made. You’d definitely be able to get by with the normal wiring. However, the 60 cycle hum was absolutely SILENT after upgrading the wiring. Noticeably quieter, but the guitar wasn’t super noisy to begin with so up to you! Hope this helps!
@armandosinger
@armandosinger Ай бұрын
@@thekipinator7660 good to know the wiring harness is probably unnecessary. For the 60 hum-I noticed you also shielded the cavity. I would think that alone did the trick. (And it didn’t look like it had conductive paint stock). I don’t see how upgraded wiring would matter unless there was something loose or something, but what do I know? I may replace one or 2 of the parts if needed, suck as a switchcrsft toggle if the pickup selector doesn’t feel good, or a pure tone jack if the output seems loose. It supposedly has full sized pots and the correct JM values so might be pretty decent out of the box.

Traded a dr rhythm drum machine & almost $500. Dan Armstrong with RT pick up. Chrome pick guard & matching headstock. The guy who built them, doesn’t remember making any like it, it was very well done, perfectly.

I recently got to play one. I agree with all the comments concerning the neck. It felt great in my hands. I noticed that the action is higher on both the low and high E strings. Over time, I think that would start to bother me. It's good to hear that the guitar stays in tune. At the price point it's a nice platform to upgrade over time.

If you prefer thicker necks (I do), I’d go with the 40th anniversary, fills your hand a lot better. But I didn’t like the pickups in that one, which was why I immediately returned it, they were pretty noisy. J mascis has great stock pickups and feels great, just little bit of a thinner neck. I’d go for the 40th anniversary if you got a budget for new pickups I’d say, but j mascis is great right out of the box, don’t need to change anything
