I still think the pneumatic dress catch thing could have legs, you'd just want to create a proper net for catching it and perhaps rotate the entire belt 45° to avoid the... Ya'know. I also think that the balloon idea could work in a more general way, attach enough balloons directly to the phone and fill the last balloon with just enough helium to make the phone fall much slower when you let go of it.

I own this phone, Ive dropped it on solid concrete face first and it didnt brake. From about 6 feet up im 6'8 and was standing and it dropped from my ear so maybe 6'6 or so feet?
