The sad thing is that they didn't recognize how great this could be. It pitches a real financially valid idea: that picking stocks randomly and staying as diverse as possible actually works. Only way to improve the algo would probably be to make sure that it doesn't buy too many repeat stocks.

So if the market does well, so do you. Portfolio managers with skill can outperform that type of strategy by choosing what types of risks they want to own (large vs. small companies, ones that have been trending down vs. upward, growth vs. value companies, etc.)

I think animals are now regularly outperforming major brokers. There's been at least one other case with a cat who picks with cat toys placed on newspaper and I think there's one with a... hamster maybe? It actually holds up a study from Sweden in which chimpanzee's narrowly outperformed college (maybe even graduate) students when it came to knowledge of world events.
