Found my way here from a KZbin Short. I've never been much of a Boat Tail fan but this project has got me liking the style. Beautiful work and if I wasn't so old and decrepitude I would want to try something like this. I did a lot of woodworking and manufacturing but this is a lot if work for sure. jack

I understand these projects though I started on my 53 truck 5 years ago. It is getting close but a ways to go still. All the drive train is done except the drive shaft and I spared no expense. Full body off mustang 2 front 4 link rear rear with a full professional built sbc and all the goodies.

While in college in Denver in 94-99 for Industrial Design, I built a complete custom rolling chassis for a 29'ish Ford 2 door sedan using a Ford 300 inline-6 and a 4 speed trans. The rear end was a Ford 9" and the front straight beam had quarter elliptical leaf springs that made the front end look like it was just hanging out there. I had an old 29 steel Ford body for the car but as I approached the end of my chassis project, a wind storm dropped a 100 year old oak tree that flattened my sedan body sitting out behind the garage. I spent a year pondering my options and although the project never was officially finished I toyed with building a complete "Woodie" style 29 sedan body. Now fast forward 20+ years and I own a small custom shop building vintage motorcycles, I have acquired a complete 41 Chevy truck cab that will fit on my old chassis. I plan to join the two sometime later this year. Thanks for the video, it's always cool to see how other people think outside the box to solve a problem.

When I do ships I run the planks on both sides at the same time. And you're definitely right, when you get to curvatures it gets tricky with a lot of custom shaping and twisting of the planks. I like to use spruce, it seems pretty friendly.

Awesome build ! I have found 3/16” strips work quite a bit easier than 1/4”….but I was building a kayak with sharper curvatures…also, built on stations and then removed as a shell so it could be ‘glassed inside and out. A heat gun, used carefully, will assist in the bend / twist aspects…. 👍

Interesting. Reminds me of my all-time favorite car, which is a 1924 boat tailed Hispano-Suiza that they only made one of. It was screwed together tulip wood, pontoon fender that were made later in its life and had copper plate to finish of the tail. If it didn't inspire this build you may want to look it up.

Very snazzy looking vehicle and well done, but I have to tell you that an old Dutch friend down here in the Dordogne beat you to it by a couple of years. He is good with wood and has built boats and even aircraft but was looking for a project a couple of years ago and came up with the idea of a wooden car. One of our other Dutch friends is a Citroen 2CV fanatic (he has a fully restored 2CV, Mehari and he's just finishing a Forgon, which is a 2CV van) and he found an Ami 6 that was up for sale partially restored because sadly the owner had health problems. However, he'd fully restored the engine, chassis and running gear and my friend acquired it and sold its body (which wasn't attached to the chassis) and set to building a wooden body for it. He doesn't have access to the fairly advanced woodworking technology that you have so what he came up with is a bit more angular but a fine item nevertheless. He needed some help with the wiring loom but got all of the systems working and the best thing is that although it looks nothing like one, the inspector here in France turned a blind eye and gave it a Controle Technique as though it was still the original Ami 6 that makes it road legal in France. I've got a short video of it that I haven't uploaded but I think now that KZbin is looking for shorts maybe I should if anyone's interested.

Beautiful work. Simply beautiful! I really appreciate your rule-of-thumb, seat-of-the-pants approach to building your Boat tail Speedster. I hope to build one myself, someday; albeit in 1/25th scale. But I was able to learn a lot from your tutorial that will help me when planning my model. Have fun driving your finished car!

That's awesome. It's like... Carpenter meets Auto Mechanic! It looks amazing! Can't wait to see the finished product. Personally, I think she's cool enough to be worthy of a flathead V8. Just one man's opinion! Keep On Keeping On Brother!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Beautiful job. In the 50s/60s (?) there was a cover story of a wooden car very similar. Possibly Mechanics Illustrated. Thanks for giving us the how to.

@@FullSteamDesigns The one I remembered is on the cover of September 1956 issue of MI. While searching I found another, I had not seen. Nov 1964. Also on the cover of Mechanics Illustrated. Yours beats 'em both although the earlier one just ain't too shabby.
