Sorry for not inclkuding this in the notes. I bought the suit from www.marinesuperstore.com They were most helpful getting things sent out and exchanged so I would recommend them for that. Just make sure you;re super careful with the suit when trying it on and you don;t take any tags etc off!!!

Hi Dave, quick note, your video started again at about 7:38. Yup, a dry suit is definitely on the “wanted” list. Coupled with your handheld AIS marine radio and your life jacket, you have got the best survival gear if it ever goes badly wrong. All on my wanted list. When I got my boat the lazerette was stuffed with old foam life jackets cut up to fit to create buoyancy. (Ex university boat, I think) anyway 2 were intact so will do for the time being. My old VHF will not float, has poor battery life and certainly no AIS, so that will be the first big acquisition. Took mine out last night. Too much wind for all the canvas, but too little for jib and mizzen only. Next time I will practice putting a reef in the main, but it is reassuring to know that the boat can still make way up wind without the main in a good blow

Hi Robin. I have been away, sorry for the dleay getting back to you! I can;t see any issue with the video restarting, can you check? Anyway yes, I think when you;re "middle" aged, then you can't have enough safety equipment. I have slowly built mine up over the years and seem to have most of what I need now. I think a Radio is a must on the sea. Its very useful contacting other vessels, also to get weather and here in Anglesey you can even get updates on Ferries leaving the port so you don't get in the way. When sailing with others, its also nice to keep in touch. I don;t really use the AIS on the radio to be honest, so thats not essential. I often switch it off simply to stop all the alerts going off when a Boat comes within 1KM of me!!! I would also maybe try and get one with USB charging next time, and maybe a bit smaller, but trying to maintain the same power output. Not sure if thats possible but mine is a brilliant radio, otehr than its a bit big, is 12V charging based (with a very sensitive 12V range. I have blown the mainboard charging forpm my Li-ION battery). I have now opted to always wear my bouyancy aid instead of the Inflatable Life Jacket. I just feel that a life jacket would get in the way of trying to right and reboard the boat. If I was sailing with others, where waiting on being rescued was an option, then the ILF would be worn, but for now its hung up waiting to be used!!! I have to admit that Lulu has been in 30mph winds where I then went under Jib and Mizzen and she was decidedly boring, sailing at 4knots. I ended up re-flying the mainsail and letting her go and she was still fine. I would never sail her on the sea like that though, but my new mainsail has 2 reefs in it now. The first one is much better placed so she genuinly has a decent reef to put in now. It's amazing how differently she will sail under the different sail plans and the more I sail in string winds, the more I like sailing her under main or reefed main alone. One of the reasons for this is she will point higher when beating, than on Jib and Main. Jib and Mizzen, she points badly, and tacks even worse!! so on a lake it's not great. Having just the main out also gives you great control if needed. Kind of like sailing a large Topper!!!

Hi Dave, hope your time away went well. Firstly re. The “restart” not sure but certainly the footage at 8:17 is identical to the footage at 4:27. But you would be better placed to see where the overlap started and finished. Not a big issue and in a way is evidence that you are just one of us, without the access to fancy editing equipment and years of experience. Yes can’t be too safe, especially when approaching middle age (66) I guess you are somewhat younger, but not still in your teens. The waters I have around me have to be treated with a lot of respect. Stronsay is on the East side of the Orkney group, so open ocean all around. We have a small area.of fairly enclosed water, but you are soon out with nothing but 300 miles of sea before Norway or 3000 miles to America. I have seen others comment about too much AIS traffic on a small handset, but it is not so busy up hear, so I might get one anyway. A bit worried about your main board getting trashed by charging with a 12v battery, I will do some research on that. (Devils Advocate) You could argue that the manufacturer is not serious about safety if that can happen, it would not be difficult for them to engineer in a little robustness. I hear what you say about the automatic life jacked verses the boyancy aid. I find that the boyancy aid also keeps the torso very warm. As for sail combinations, it is early days. I have only sailed the boat for an hour on 3 occasions, but found the mizzen and jib option reassuring, especially when it sailed up wind in a boisterous breeze. Anyway, I have set her up to try the reef in the main next time I go out, trouble is the wind does what it wants, not what I want. We will get there eventually. I will probably have to take her out before October, because our little harbour gets a battering in the winter, so some serious work to be done to seal up all the leaks and try to do something about the trailer, did I mention, the trailer is made of Swiss cheese? Anyway, keep ‘em coming.

Hopefully! Although I still have the conundrum of keeping warm in the water, but not overheating whilst on the boat!!! How do you do that?!

Looks good Dave. I find with my drysuit that I always end up sweating when I wear it, so I haven't tried an inner fleece

Hi Tommo. Been away, sorry for the not getting back to you. Yes, my experience of dry suits is the same. Basically too hot to wear on the boat. The fleec is extra toasty. I actually took it on a sea cruise this season as extra warmth when sleeping and it was lovely!!

In my case, wearing a dry suit extends the sailing season massively. And no hassle with wet clothes or peeling of a wetsuit in the cold. I ‘m sure you ‘ll like it

Hi There. Yes I think thats the key. It is a very fine balancing act, wearing the right clothing for if you are thrown into the water Versus, keeping cool when on the boat. In the summer, I can't see how you wear a drysuit on a Lugger. You just overheat. But of course if you fall into the water in shorts and tshort then it is maybe too cold. Whaddya do!!! I have had an offer to maybe sail in a race in December so the drysuit will be handy for that though!!!

Hi Dave, Great video I'm looking to buy one myself, Unfortunately there are know outlets I can visit so have to buy online which I'm not a lover of, especially for clothing. How did you find the sizing chart and was it correct ? What are supposed to wear under these suites, which will have an effect on the size? lastly are the boots you wear? Hopefully you can point me in the right direction.

Hi Gregory So where I bought mine from were happy to exchange the suit. I needed to change it twice, so I tried 3 suits on before getting the right fit. The Typhoon one had a lot of different sizes so it would fit tall and slim or short and "portly" etc. I ende dup having a slightly different sized inner fleece suit to the actual suit which was fine. You could buy 3 or 4 suits in one go, but of course would need the money, or at least credit card size, to do that! So that cost me about £30 in postage. I would have spent the same or perhaps even more in fuel driving off to somewhere that custom makes them or going to the actual shop which all seem to be on the south coast here in the UK!!! I bought the "Teddy suit" but you can wear anything inside. Thats the beauty of dry suits. I suspect I would be wearing shorts and t-shirt most of the time until the winter. The last time I wore one was on a Rib at the end of Novemeber and I wore Jogging bottoms, tshirt/thin jumpoer and used my neoprene shoes that were much warmer as I was able to warm up the water inside them.

Been away on holiday, sorry for the delay getting back. Still got the FL:aden suit but I have struggled to wear it as it just doesn;t get cold enough unless sailing in the winter. I think I will try and test it on Bala over the winter period.
