Glad the weather cooperated with you after all that worry! It does look good, and having your own bales is much better than having to get some from others! And the weather apps are always terrible, if you can find a more local amateur weather man, who's on facebook, he (or she) will likely be able to do better than the NOAA app!

It costs more to make bad hay than good hay. Earlier in the season May June I was cutting and conditionering all in one and baling in 48 hours. I was daft enough to do someone's else hay, and they wanted mine later. Ready to bale mine last week, and they pulled out as I was nearly ready to bale the hay. The older Cook sledge on the baler, "Fantastic" which one can keep the flat 8's off the corners and in rows for easier pick up I would say the sledge like mine could be 35 to over 40 years old. Keep machinery dry when not using it, if one can, and it will go on near forever, apart from wearing parts. The sledges ate still being made by Ritchie now. Great video.

Hi Richard, well done getting your hay done.you’re right about the weather forecast I missed that weather window because the forecast was so inaccurate and we are in the middle of building a lake so we needed good weather to do both now it’s unlikely I’ll get any hay so hopefully I’ll get mine done to nice silage or haylage now early in September and then buy some hay for my calves and sheep anyway look after yourself Richard any keep cracking on👍

Great to see your videos as life really is. Let down by a contractor this year for hay making so, although I always said I wouldn't do it myself decided to buy the kit. Looked at a new NH baler but couldn't really justify the price so went for a good NH 575. You do need a bit of engineering skills to keep these machines going but have really enjoyed doing the work and the result is, the hay is in and more than I would normally have where selling standing grass and having some of the bales. I decision I pondered on but don't regret it where I can now do the lot when I want to.😀

That looks like some cracking good hay. Should make for a tasty snack for the gals! Been a weird weather year on this side of the pond, too. No rain in some places, just enough to make outdoor work difficult in others, but not make it less dry; or ALL the rain... 2 of the channels I subscribe to dropped a video on the same day: Trinity Dairy in Minnesota, is so dry he's starting maize silage now- while it still has enough moisture to pack and ferment. His fields are very patchy. if it got shade, it looks alright- if it's on a sandy knoll top, it looks stunted and burnt... Not looking good for volume. In Maine, TayFarms is still finishing up FIRST cutting hay. It's been too wet to even get out in many of their fields... Brent "found" a nice big rock, like the one you chucked aside- with the mower. I can only imagine the hideous noise THAT made. Never been one there before- it just grew up out of the ground, lol. They've had a hell of a time trying to make enough dry hay to see them though...

good job, nice that making the hay worked out 👌🏻 the hard work is rewarded. is it an idea to make a good chain lock on the gate? then there will be no unwanted visitors, and you will save time moving bales. good luck with the farm work this week.

Small bales you need to get off the ground because they pick up moisture easier than the round ones give the cattle a garlic block will help with flies

That tractor is a bit over kill we used to use a ford 5000 back in the 1970s and a ford dexter loader tractor i used to walk behind the balesledge and stack the bales in 6 or 8 to be picked up with the dexter and bale squeeze then hand stacked on the trailer those we're the days bloody hard work then off loaded with a lister elevator just like the one you have, roy.

Totally agree the met office weather forecasts have become absolute rubbish probably like you and most farmers I look at the forecast in the morning but by mid day it says something else and by evening its totally different to what it was12 hours earlier.😠

I use 3 different weather apps, if they all say it's going to rain then it's going to rain. All weather forecasters are interested about their profile rather than the weather.

If there was a competition for how many youtube videos you can make out of making one field of hay........you would win Richard. Haha. But yes i've found the weather forecasting this year hasn't been good.........especially for haymaking you need a accurate forecast for the coming week, not a ever changing one....but i often base my thoughts on how close a 'High' pressure is to us......but sometimes you still get showers then aswell

it's been a bad time for farmers this year with the milk price drop and I have been in farming all my life and I was going to get made redundant because there is no market for turkeys I use to milk cows but in Yorkshire the cow farmers are getting less it's a shame but that's farming for you work long hours and no return it's sad but we carry on
