Keep in mind that this was in the early mid 1960's, during the infancy of the growth of rock and roll. Context is everything.

It's a shame that you can't hear George's ( the one in the middle) on his guitar solo, for some reason the sound is gone on his guitar there. Listen to the recorded version on the album, so you can HEAR what George is playing there.

So this performance was in '63 and u can see these fans are going crazy! Here in America? We hadn't yet heard of the Beatles, let alone, this song! But, when they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in early '64, just months after President Kennedy was assassinated, this was totally what young America was ready for. I had just turned 14 and these guys are singing about a 17 year old girl? But I loved it! Followed this band til the day they broke up, when I was 20. The announcement was one of the saddest days of my life!

As someone who has always worked in national TV… I, 1) appreciate how hard it is to mix live performances in a TV studio 2) but mostly I appreciate Paul knowing that side cam was getting his close up and turning towards it! That’s my boy 💙 As my Dad says, there was nothing even remotely like them at the time. The songs. The presentation. The energy. The personalities. (Even the timing.) They were a perfect storm!

@@therealjetty4889 THAT is the CORRECT WAY to do it, most reactors start with their later albums, which is RIDICULOUS. Like you are doing, you have to start from their beginning to fully appreciate how their music evolved/progressed. ENJOY the JOURNEY, I can't WAIT to see your reactions to ALL of their albums. (I am a 75 year old fan who was 17 when they first came to America in Feb of 1964)

@@kentclark6420 I don't know. What's it called? A soundboard. The guy mixing the sound, wasn't doing a very good job. It sounded like John was singing lead. Oh, I enjoy the video a lot. It's just not great for someone hearing the song for the first time.

Congratulations on reacting to this 1963 Swedish TV music performance by The Beatles. Before it was taken down here on KZbin, I watched the entire episode of the Swedish TV music program, "Drop In". The Beatles performed in the latter part of the show, and performed four songs: "She Loves You", "Twist And Shout", "I Saw Her Standing There", and "Long Tall Sally".

Interesting mix, you hear John's harmony more than Paul's lead vocal in some spots. But hey, that's the special magic of listening to a live performance from 1963! Agree with you 100% about the danceability factor. Those guys knew how to get the crowd going. Glad you're enjoying the early Beatles 🙂

The mixboard technology absolutely SUCKED so most TV shows us lip-sync'ing rather than pretend a 2-input mixboard was satisfactory. Ed Sullivans Show had to be one of the richest programs in TV history up to that point and still their Beatles' show was using two 2-input mixboards - and they were far from perfect. It really wasn't until after 1975 that venues could afford the newest and barely decent products.

I have to agree with everyone complaining about the mixing. John was supposed to be a harmony, not take over as lead vocalist.

It's not really the Beatles' first song. They previously released tracks as a short-term backing band (as "The Beat Brothers") to British rock 'n' roller Tony Sheridan. They even had a minor hit with their version of "My Bonnie" (1962). Two weeks before this performance in Sweden with, among other songs, "I saw her standing there", on October 13, 1963, the Beatles first became known to a large public in the UK through their performance on "Val Parnell's Sunday Night At The London Palladium". A 15,000,000 TV audience, that was introduced to the fan hysteria for the first time. The term "Beatlemania" was born.

@@therealjetty4889 Yes, that's right. The first official Beatles-album "Please Please Me" (1963) starts with "I saw her standing there". Regulary played live by the Beatles between 1962-1964. Actually, I just wanted to point out, that the Beatles were already professionally active, long before this first official LP was released. Is sometimes overlooked.

@@therealjetty4889 McCartney was 20 when he wrote the song, inspired by a traditional. And one can't easily transfer the customs of 1962 or any other time to today. Especially in the 1960s, when young people in large parts of the world finally fought for more freedom, not least sexual freedom, and shook through the brittle, often mendacious and pseudo-moral world of adults. Not least with the influence of the Beatles and the generally emerging pop culture. Of course, there were also various exaggerations, hedonism, growing drug use, but if one compare the positives and negatives, a large part of the world has benefited from these developments.

Unfortunately, the sound people were unaware of the importance of knowing when harmonies were coming on the mics, or guitar solos were about to be played. Other than that, this is pure Gold. Probably just 6-8 months after Ringo stepped in for Pete. What a difference it made.
