I saw an interview with the singer. He said he just felt like it needed some syllables in that spot, so he added some gibberish: grruss.... . He discovered later that gruss is a greeting in some parts of Germany. He also found the audiences, and eventually the band, singing "Bruce".. so that's what it became.

In the original recording the word is actually GRÜẞE, German for GREETINGS, thrown in on the fly as a rhythm filler. Later, the concert fans singing along heard BRUCE, so live he just went with it. Joe Elliott (DEF LEPPARD) recently said Jeff Lynne is still killing it with that voice. Jeff is 76.

@@jeffjackson8475 From the Wikipedia article. In the liner notes of the ELO compilation Flashback and elsewhere, Lynne has explained that he is singing a made-up word, "Groos", which some have suggested sounds like the German expression "Gruß", meaning "greeting." Lynne has explained that originally he did not realize the meaning of the syllable, and he just used it as a temporary placekeeper to fill a gap in the lyrics, but upon learning the German meaning he decided to leave it in. After the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows.

I've come to hate this song over the years because of the Bruce thing 😛 . No aspersions overall on ELO; they're epic. Some of the first rock I ever listened to was on a long road trip with my brother. He only had one cassette in the car, with Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" one one side, and ELO's "El Dorado" on the other. We listened to that tape over and over and over. Both albums are now near and dear to my heart.

I think you would enjoy 'Only You' by The Flying Pickets. The song was a classic 80s synth pop by Yazoo - Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke. Vince had founded Depeche Mode but left after one album because he wanted to do happy synth pop but Dave Garman had darker ideas about what synth pop could do (as you have heard). The flying pickets did an acapella cover in which they sing all the synth lines (as well as the vocal lines).

"Don't Bring Me Down" is probably my absolute favorite song by ELO. That power drum intro, to me, sets the tone for the song. Jeff Lynne really drives the song home with his singing here. Lots of energy. No matter howe old this song is, and I was a teenager when the song came out in the late 1970's, I will crank up the radio when this song comes on. I love that you love ELO, Elizabeth. If it hasn't been mentioned yet, some more fun ELO songs would be "I'm Alive" and "All Over The World", both from the Xanadu soundtrack.

Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. Wrote and produced everything the band did. He's still touring. Also, besides "being" ELO, he produced George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Dave Edmunds, Roy Orbison & company, was a member of the "Traveling Wilburys" and was instrumental to pulling off The Beatles Anthology.

ELO was the most popular band on Earth for like almost 2 years maybe 3. And the competition wasn't average. I was - and still am - more into Rush, Zep, Sabbath, Floyd, Who, Motown, etc - but these cats definitely broke through and by today's standards would be #1 no question.

@@Greg-io1ip ELO, my favorite band, was never the most popular band. They were at their peak of popularity from '75 - '79, and yes, they were super popular. But that 5-year stretch was dominated by Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Pink Floyd, Queen, and the Bee Gees. Rumours alone sold more copies than all ELO albums combined. And I mean, *_way_* more. HOWEVER...if you consider ELO's entire career from '72 to '86, they did have more Top 40 Hits combined between the US and UK than any other band in the world over that same 15-year period! _(That does not include solo artists, though. So, for example, Elton John had way more Top 40 Hits combined between the US and UK, than ELO did. And if you add Wings to Paul's solo career, he also had more than ELO. A few others did, as well. Still, it's a remarkable distinction for ELO!)_

Thank you, Elizabeth, for re-introducing me to ELO. This was some of my happy music about two thirds of a lifetime ago. "Tonight, Tonight" by Hot Chelle Rae has been on my happy playlist for a while. It's not a chocobo (love the idea tho lmao), it's the german word "Gruß". Because they recorded this in Munich where people greet each other with "Grüß Gott!" which means "greet god" and they found that very sweet and wanted to put something there in the chorus so they chose this word. they wanted to replace it with something that makes more sense but never came around to it.

Grooossss is a non sensical word Jeff filled in that section with. He just kept it in the final version of the song. Another happy tune from the boys, is the one they did with Olivia Newton John on vocals, the title track Off the Xanadu soundtrack. ELO had the entire 2nd half of the soundtrack. All Over the World in that same album from ELO is also a really happy fun tune that gets you up off the chair to dance to!!! Really even when the lyrics aren’t happy, ELO and Jeff Lynne tend to make them sound very happy!
