I consistently dance to the few Electric Light Orchestra songs I've heard on this channel (namely "Mr. Blue Sky" which has been my absolute favorite), and have added them to my "happy playlist" as they just bring me so much joy. Time to add another one!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to ELO performing "Don't Bring Me Down" for the first time.

In the original recording the word is actually GRÜẞE, German for GREETINGS, thrown in on the fly as a rhythm filler. Later, the concert fans singing along heard BRUCE, so live he just went with it. Joe Elliott (DEF LEPPARD) recently said Jeff Lynne is still killing it with that voice. Jeff is 76.

@@jeffjackson8475 From the Wikipedia article. In the liner notes of the ELO compilation Flashback and elsewhere, Lynne has explained that he is singing a made-up word, "Groos", which some have suggested sounds like the German expression "Gruß", meaning "greeting." Lynne has explained that originally he did not realize the meaning of the syllable, and he just used it as a temporary placekeeper to fill a gap in the lyrics, but upon learning the German meaning he decided to leave it in. After the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows.

I've come to hate this song over the years because of the Bruce thing 😛 . No aspersions overall on ELO; they're epic. Some of the first rock I ever listened to was on a long road trip with my brother. He only had one cassette in the car, with Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" one one side, and ELO's "El Dorado" on the other. We listened to that tape over and over and over. Both albums are now near and dear to my heart.

I saw an interview with the singer. He said he just felt like it needed some syllables in that spot, so he added some gibberish: grruss.... . @@Greg-io1ip ELO, my favorite band, was never the most popular band. They were at their peak of popularity from '75 - '79, and yes, they were super popular. But that 5-year stretch was dominated by Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Pink Floyd, Queen, and the Bee Gees. Rumours alone sold more copies than all ELO albums combined. And I mean, *_way_* more. HOWEVER...if you consider ELO's entire career from '72 to '86, they did have more Top 40 Hits combined between the US and UK than any other band in the world over that same 15-year period! _(That does not include solo artists, though. So, for example, Elton John had way more Top 40 Hits combined between the US and UK, than ELO did. And if you add Wings to Paul's solo career, he also had more than ELO. A few others did, as well. Still, it's a remarkable distinction for ELO!)_

I recommend you check out "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Randy Bachman recorded a joke version of the vocals to rib his brother, who had a stutter. The band liked that version of the song, so it became the version they kept! Great happy song and super fun to sing along to.

ELO - awesome! The "Time" concept album just blew my 14yo mind! It was a privilege growing up with ELO, Yes, Rush, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Supertramp, The Moody Blues, Sky, Renaissance, Magnum,, Steeleye Span and so many other amazing bands of all genres - and yes I loved (and still love) classical (especially baroque) music, folk music as well and play guitar and piano myself. Happy songs: Del Amitri - "Roll to Me", Chris De Burgh - "This Waiting Heart", Roxette - "Joyride", Cher - "The Shoop Shoop Song", Elton John - "Kiss the Bride", Counting Crows - "Accidentally in Love", Owen Paul - "My Favourite Waste of Time", Yes - "Love Will Find a Way", R.E.M .- "Shiny Happy People" ❤ Jo x

@@nelsonhemstreet3568 I first heard of Renaissance as a child via the song "Northern Lights" but borrowed vinyl albums as a teenager. I later bought them myself as CDs. My favourite albums are "Scheherazade and Other Stories" and "A Song for all Seasons". I ❤ their deep (progressive) mixture of rock and orchestral music. I'd LOVE Elizabeth to do a deep dive into "A Song for all Seasons" 🥰

@@joannecunliffe8067 My first contact with them was in my dorm as a college sophomore, walking down the hall and hearing the last third of Song of Scheherazade. I stood in the door listening. When the guy looked up at me, I asked, "Do you mind if I just listen?" He smiled and went back to studying. This was fall of 1979 or spring of 1980 in upstate New York. Song of Scheherazade is still my #2 favorite of all time.

If no one else has said it, the saucer was the iconic symbol for the "New World Record" album, as well as the "Out of the Blue" album. I went to the concert for the The New World Record. where they had a full scale Saucer that opened and they emerged when the concert started, and closed with all of them in it at the end. I've been a fan ever since the first time I heard"Living Thing" on the radio until today, and was thrilled to watch you analyze "Mr Blue Sky". I hope you take a trip through their vast recorded song catalogue and continue enjoy their unique style and clever lyrics.

As a child of the 80s every football player had a perm,as a result I dismissed this as my father’s music, more fool me because I experienced every type of music except the big 70s bands,I’m gutted I missed out but better late than never, thank heavens for utube because I’m not a concert goer so this gives me the experience I missed out on first time round the block, marvellous music from a marvellous era of music,🇬🇧👍🇺🇸

I'm sorry you felt that way. I mostly grew up in the '70's, and my first Rock song I ever heard was Crocodile Rock. But my parents' favorites such as the Lettermen and Harry Bellefonte I have always loved, as well as Spike Jones who was more of my grandmother's era. I am currently teaching my nephews about previous generation's music (don't worry, my sons grew up with this tradition)

I think you would enjoy 'Only You' by The Flying Pickets. The song was a classic 80s synth pop by Yazoo - Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke. Vince had founded Depeche Mode but left after one album because he wanted to do happy synth pop but Dave Garman had darker ideas about what synth pop could do (as you have heard). The flying pickets did an acapella cover in which they sing all the synth lines (as well as the vocal lines).
