This is absolutely the greatest episode of Arthur. I managed a children’s indoor playground for a little while and we always had the lobby TV set to PBS kids and this episode was on one afternoon. All the adults were laughing so hard 😂
@siriehtstudio
@siriehtstudio 4 жыл бұрын
Ok so, as someone who has actually worked in TV, I can clue you in on the "Bleep Button"! If the show is being shot live, there is indeed a big red button, and if someone slips up or if someone calls into the show and starts cussing the host out, I can push the button. The live show had a 10 second delay, so I have a 10 second window to push that button and bleep the sound. The show I worked on actually didn't make a "bleep" sound. It just garbled the audio or would silence it. That is only for a live show, though. Otherwise, we would indeed "bleep" in post or just cut out an entire sentence altogether if we didn't think it was appropriate.

I remember this episode very clearly. There’s a lot of episodes that I watched in my childhood that I remember vividly including the lice episode, the one where they had the Halloween episode, the one where Arthur & Francine got locked up in the library, the one where everyone thought Brain was a bug, etc.
@PrincessofEllabur

the last one I have a book somewhere here-I misplaced it (too many books)- that inspired that Bug eposide. Since a focus of the show orignally was to get Children to read. So some of the stories which been shown or mentioned in "The short, summer"- Arthur after founding his list- imaged himself in Treasure Island, and in Gulliver's Travellers. The one with Binky Chasing the Butteryfly mentions Moby Dick, The one where we all learn "not to cry over spill milk", mentions Oliver Twist, of course the Libary card one mentions a lot, including Jeyell and Hyde, a later epoisde which started Fern had Fern do her own take on Frakenstien story, of course there's the Robin Hood legend!

You actually remember specific episodes of tv you watched as a kid? I can’t even remember episodes of shows I watched a month ago. I didn’t watch Arthur that much as a kid but I watched SpongeBob a lot and I can’t think of a single episode even though I know there was episodes I watched hundreds of times. All I can remember are locations with a vague idea of a scene. I can’t think of an episode of any tv show that I watched more than a week ago. The best I got is just the words “the episode they did this thing”, no actual memory, just the words.

I’m 50. Cussing was normal for the adults in my life. I wasn’t allowed to curse in front of my family until I was an adult because “those aren’t words for kids.” 🤔 When my daughter was 2 she said, look at all the shit in the back of that truck. I didn’t reprimand her. I changed my speech. She knew what curse words were and knew what they meant. But I explained that if I show her the respect not to curse in front of her, she should apply the same respect to me. It worked. At least when she was a child.😂😂😂

Pretty sure the word they’re saying is “f-you”. It’s got two syllables and strong enough that there’s no question of it being a swear that a kid could automatically get in trouble for. And it’s very close to the slang for gay people. I remember as a kid the two words being used almost simultaneously before we knew what they meant.

Well for live tv you usually have a sound engineer/other production staff on site to make sure equipment is working, but live tv also works off a several second delay too, so technically it is like adding it in post, just done very in a very quick turnaround. In any case, a show like that wouldn't be going out live unless it was a play or something performed live. bleeps would be added in post-production well before the episode airs.

I _vividly_ remember this episode. Like, the second the title was mentioned I immediately remembered the Sopranos bit & [as a kid] feeling a little shocked that they just had straight-up bleeps instead of making it overly ambiguous like the Sailor Mouth Spongebob episode. It didn't make much of an impact on me past that, though, because I had already gotten The Talk and been told that I could curse so long as it wasn't _at_ someone long before I ever saw this episode; I was more surprised by the episode stepping out of the "comfort zone" of kids shows.
