I love how in the Planet Fitness ads the buff/beautiful people are literally just existing. Why not show them doing actual toxic gym behavior for the ads?
@aspenisthebest
@aspenisthebest 8 ай бұрын
because there is no toxic behavior to portray. it's a gym, a place to workout and that's what people do there, no matter if you're hot or half a ton. That's one of the reasons the ad is so horrible. It's literally saying hot people in a gym, just working out and looking good while doing it for some reason offends the "ugly" or regular folk. It's saying a fit person in general is offensive to see at a gym, even though in reality it should be encouraging. If I was working out and saw a girl with a better body than mine, I'd be motivated, not scared or upset for no reason. That'd be wild--unless for fat people it's different, and they are actually scared of fit people for some unknown reason, which would be pretty funny.

Honestly, those meat heads you see at the other gyms lifting hundreds of pounds and are there for hours every day, they're sooo supportive! They'll spot you, they'll give you tips if you ask, they'll slowly become your friend if you're there the same times you are. I worked at a big chain gym and the big dudes were always so funny and nice, even though I was overweight and not lifting as much. It's intimidating as hell but they were some of the sweetest and most outgoing people there. ALSO THEY HAVE INSECURITIES TOO. A LOT of them I met still didn't think they were good enough or strong enough or ripped enough, even though I'd look at them and think they were amazing, they always wanted to improve. Ripped people are people, fat people are people, at the end of the day we all want to be accepted. I really find it hard to feel comfortable at PF even with their mantra of.... hating buff people..? The lunk alarm, the signs that say no gallon jugs of water, we're really policing water intake now?? It just really rubs me the wrong way, all of it.

The reason Planet Fitness doesn't want people who look like they work out going there is because their business model is to get as many people on contracts as they can. They know if you're a Lunk, you'll keep coming back, but if you're out of shape, you sign up, not come and they can tell the next perspective client 'look we have lots of room for you', all the while that empty gym has a thousand members who never show up.

I was 300 pounds when I joined Planet Fitness summer of 2016. I went every day during the slow hours; took every class they offered & a year later I was at 145; quite strong & building a good bit of muscle. At that time they would hit the lunk alarm while I was doing the exercises everyone else in the class were doing ; telling me I needed to “bring it down “ not long after I was no longer allowed to sign up for any classes at all. I wasn’t showing off; but I was committed to becoming physically strong & healthy at 49 years old. I watched my mother suffering from problems associated with obesity every single day in the nursing home which I would go to visit every morning before I went to planet fitness to #1 take a mental break from caring for both my aging parents one at home/ one in a home #2 take responsibility for my own physical health; loosing weight/correcting my own health problems. I discovered I had a real passion for something I had never thought I would. But never did I ever think that I would be “ a lunk “ unwelcome there. Now I go to a little gym in a warehouse where there are friendly people who mind their own business; gladly spot me if I ask for help & actually became a power lifter. PF has it’s place but it’s not a place to plan to stay because it’s impossible to continue to make progress with them; especially if they are so hurtful that it’s their intention to outcast someone who is simply committed.

These are my Planet Fitness stories. I was a college cheerleader, I had 3 hour practice seccions and had to go to the gym on days off to build up strength to catch and hold the flyers when doing stunts. So I naturally drank alot of water. I once brought a gallon of water, no member complained but the staff was staring at me the whole time. When I started stretching the manager came up to me and told me that they'll let it slide this time, but I couldn't bring it again cause people could relate a gallon to bodybuilders and they could feel intimidated and be discouraged from working out. My face was like 👁👄👁, bruh I'm 5'5 and weight around 160 (at the time) I don't think I'm intimidating anyone. I'm gay and from Puerto Rico, it's 100 degree temperatures all year round, so one particularly HOT day I decided to wear a crop top and shorts. I was told that I couldn't wear that, while I'm not really muscular I have an athletes type of body, so I was told that wearing clothes that revealed my stomach and thighs could make other insecure about their body, mind you I was getting many compliments from the old ladies and teenage girls about my bright pink crop top and blue unicorn shorts. I also always been very bottom heavy, always had big thighs and a big butt, so I can squat a high amount, well another time I was told that I had too many weights on my bar and I was giving for a third time the speech of about how I could potentially intimidate others from work out and make them feel insecure because they can't squat the same amount I can. I proceeded to tell them how tired I was of their BS "no judgment" policies, all I was trying to do was get my workout in at a cheap price cause as a broke college students I couldn't pay all those professional gyms. Btw they were also gonna charge me for canceling my membership. Then the pandemic hit and they offered to cancel memberships for free since they wouldn't be able to provide their services. I took the opportunity and have never gone back to a Planet Fitness.

As a former planet fitness employee: they’re owned by Sun Tan City, which is why they have tanning beds, and they run the gym like any other business, not like a gym. They are judgmental, towards the gym bros. In their eyes, there’s more beginners than people who are super serious about lifting and building muscle. That’s why they have like two smith machines and a “cardio theater” bc beginners are going straight to the treadmills and bikes.
@platonymous
@platonymous 2 жыл бұрын
If I could add on to this. They clearly don’t want you to meet your goals. They serve free pizza weekly which is nice if the goal of going to the gym wasn’t to stay healthy and pizza is probably the opposite of this. The weights are actually labeled incorrectly. The membership claims it’s 10 dollars a month but with the fees it becomes much more expensive. And as you said it’s mostly cardio equipment which should not be the main reason you go to the gym that’s just a waste of money.

@@BrianaLynn7 if you want pizza, then you should eat pizza. If you are going to the gym, maybe a slice of pizza isnt the first thing you wanna stuff your face with immediately afterward. Also, if you are spending money on a gym membership, it logically follows that you are aspiring toward a body that approaches those of the "skinny ass fit people" that you so resent. The business model is pretty simple. They cater to beginners, but beginners eventually become experienced and experienced people dont go to Planet Fitness. So the company is sabotaging you with pizza and ice cream, and discouraging people with experience from coming to the gym, in order to keep thier captive base of plucky beginners. Its pretty pernicious.

So what I find very interesting about planet fitness is the fact that they have a sign that states "judgement free zone" but then simultaneously stereotype a certain time of gym goer, typically a chad with a nice physique that he most likely worked hard for, cut off tank top and a backwards cap. In my experience, generally the most "gymtimidating" men in the gym - some of which may even be wearing the stereotypical clothing items and display the muscularity of a "lunk"- tend to be the nicest, most down to earth and helpful people. Now why is that? Well, because they know what it is like to put in the effort in order to achieve success. They understand the mental process and dedication it takes. They have been through the journey and then in return want to help lift other people up as well.

What my comment was trying to say is that being fat should not matter when it comes to gyms, as it's wrong to bully people in general. I suppose that I should've clarified that my comment was coming from the pov of someone fat and that what I meant is that it's awful when people have to fear being picked on for their size at a place where people exercise (and often already feel vulnerable due to the culture of anti-fatness). I'll be updating my comment to prevent further misunderstandings though, lol. The last thing I want to do is invalidate people who've gone through the same shit as me. @@BrianaLynn7 i don’t know how many gyms you’ve gone to and if you’ve ever gone frequently for an extended period of time, but as a person who lifts and is also fat, the people i’ve felt the most judgement from have never been the ultra fit people. if you go frequently you actually make friends with or at least chat with most of them as well as the staff/trainers. when i first started i 100% felt what you feel. but after a while i realized most of it was my own anxieties in my head, and i was projecting them onto others - e.g. someone makes eye contact with me for a second then looks away with a blank or hard-set face, i would perceive that as them scoffing at me, when really they just happened to look my direction during their own workout, which is a hard thing that often makes people grimace. imo a lot of that “judgement” people feel (again, myself included when i started) is often built up by hollywood and advertising expectations as well as personally feeling anxious and down on yourself. this especially happens when you’re forcing yourself to get into the habit, because it SUCKS and going is SO HARD and then you feel SO SORE afterwards!! and then you have to do it again, ugh right? and understandably those added stressors amplify your own anxieties that you are probably going to the gym to address, so the stress is very acute. believe me, i have very high and medicated anxiety, so it was a big big hurdle for me to finally come to peace with these things, and i still sometimes will lapse into feeling that way. in my experience, i mostly feel judgement coming from beginners who are insecure about not knowing much about their form (understandable! you can’t know unless you practice and learn!), or about how they look at that gym (when no one is looking at you, they’re focusing on their own goals and workout), or from thin rich women in lululemon who come to gossip on the elliptical with their friends and then leave (and therefore are not really there to workout). but dedicated gym people are all about self-improvement, and they love and relate to others who are also trying to improve in some way. if there is any judgement, which there always will be someone in a large public place who likes to judge others, it’s THAT person’s problem, not yours! judgement stems from insecurity, so just know they are judging you because they wish to put you down in order to make themselves feel better. and instead of feeling insecure from their judgement, try and empathize with them and feel sorry for them, because they obviously have some demons they need to tackle. TLDR; i understand deeply the struggles of being fat in a fatphobic world. it’s caused me a lot of grief, eating disorders, and other struggles since i was very young (and had an older sister who was a model, yikes right?). but though people do judge sometimes, i’ve found that it’s either in my head, or they’re the asshole. don’t let them get to you, and don’t let them stop you from working out, making friends with people at the gym, or asking for help with your form and other guidance.

We ate and took our breaks in a storage closet because it was steps away from the desk. Many members rightfully complained about the counterproductive pizza nights (less the coffee and bagels mornings tho), chocolate or grape tootsie rolls at the desk that we weren't allowed to hide, and tanning. Also it's fucked to film in a gym, people don't want to be in your video/pics especially not when they're working out. The employees are overworked and don't get paid enough to deal with more idiots. PF is hardly a gym, more a business with gym equipment and merch. The regulars and staff are what can make it a nonjudgmental space, not the company that's for sure.

I think the implication was supposed to be "there aren't going to be gatekeeping fitness jerks here" the only issue is the people they show being "jerks", usually are not doing anything wrong except existing with the body the other person wishes they had... the only thing those 3 girls were doing was complimenting each other. They said nothing about the other girl. they didn't look at her smugly or say something negative about non-fit people in general, they just complimented each other in a way that had nothing to do with anybody else. If simply existing near somebody who you feel is hotter than you makes you feel self-concious that is your problem and not theirs. I have been to planet fitness and like 300 lb ladies will just be glaring at me while barely peddling a stationary bike... Assumably just because I am skinny. I get that all the time! "You're already in shape. Why are you working out???" They really think that once you reach your goals, you can just stop working out and go back to eating crap lmao.

I went to a gymnastics camp when I was 12 and the girls wore sports bras and the guys were shirtless and it was fine. No one cared and the campers were all in like middle/high school. If you as an adult can’t handle seeing someone work out in a tank top or drink out of a large water bottle, YOU are the problem

As a female bodybuilder I went on vacation and the only gym at the beach was a planet fitness and they told me I couldn't work out there because I was in a tank top with a gallon of water so..... kind of discriminatory

I think I have one of the very very few planet fitnesses where it’s extremely clean, the workers are supportive and nice, and the gym goers are like little angels. Been going there for a little over a year and anytime I go to another planet fitness I cry a lil

Lucky you! I think a lot of the staff at my pf wish I wouldn't even show up. The majority are unfriendly and cold. No greeting, no smiles, no nothing but stoney silence. The few who are nice get punished and then don't make that mistake again.

A big problem I have with planet fitness, is that their employees generally don't care about health and fitness. It'd be like hiring a chef who doesn't care about cooking, or a waiter who doesn't know the menu. Most gyms hire people that can double as both general labourers- cashiers, front desk, customer support, etc- and as actual trainers. At the gym I go to, owned by a local dude who happens to own a big garage, I have seen workers work to prevent injury whil strolling around doing their job. I was honestly shocked when I saw the JACKED man, tasked with replacing garbage bags, sprint to spot someone on the bench press and say that going to heavy on the bench with no spotter is dangerous, and continuing to do so would have him removed from the gym as no one wanted to see someone get injured. I have never seen a planet fitness employee that looks fit.

That’s the entire reason why they hire them, they don’t care about their health and are out of shape except for one or two so everyone who comes in out of shape and what not doesn’t feel bad which I a stupid concept.

As a personal trainer I have worked at many gyms. ALL gyms hire questionable people. You cannot just put that solely on PF. I can name 12 different brand and boutique gyms that hire overweight people

The fact that they shame anyone fit at a gym is insane. When my dad first wanted to work out there they told him no because he was too bulky and intimidating or some other stupid thing like that.
