Fry! PLEASE cover a game called total chaos on gzdoom. It is unlike anything youd expect from something like GZdoom. Its dark, grity, and frankly honestly super terrifying. The game has a pretty decent difficulty level with lots of survival mechanics, but its super worth showing what it has to offer to people.

That's fine when the craft is "hit nail in wood" but not with software development. There are very real limitations of certain languages and engines. But, that also doesn't mean new is better. Although to be clear I absolutely agree with BigFry, but wanted to clear it up. Thanks, Principle Developer.

@@UnsettlingNarrationsObviously programming languages and engines have limitations, that isn't the point. A talented developer can make an incredible game with an ancient engine, whereas an incompetent developer could be given an infinite budget with the latest engine and still make garbage. That's the point. Whether the craft is hit nail in wood or building a nuclear reactor, blaming your tools means you are in fact shit.

Fun fact: The person developing Brutal Fate, Marcus Abenante (better known as Sgt. Mark IV) is the same guy who created the awesome Brutal Doom mod! Speaking of which, he and his team are currently finishing out the most current version (v22) of Brutal Doom, and once THAT releases, the 1.0 version of a Brutal Doom-centered megawad, Extermination Day, will release at the same time, which is also largely made by him, if I'm not mistaken. Thanks for the heads up on Brutal Fate. I had it wishlisted, but didn't realize the dev was such a real dude. Definitely hope he can achieve all of his goals with that game and, more importantly, get into a better headspace soon! Selaco is amazing. I recently tried shouting it out on a tech forum I'm on and received a very lukewarm/negative reaction with people immediately writing it off because "the animations aren't smooth" and "I'm tired of the retro look" and other ignorant comments after watching some vids I posted. These same folks have a 100 page thread discussing Starfield, and also threads for any/all AAA releases (no matter how unoriginal, rehashed, microtransacted, etc.) and clearly do not realize nor can appreciate the things happening indie/AA scene right now; we are eating GOOD. They just don't get it. Oh well.

I used to play classic DOOM and Duke3D when I was much younger and iv kept with the trend mostly and still revisit an play my childhood 90s games even today with running GZDoom with DOOM itself or playing Duke3D and the expansion packs using the Build Engines most popular source port being EDuke32 which also has games releasing on it using the EDuke source port too like Ion Fury that released a while back, as well as large modding communities for both GZDoom and EDuke. Its games like those I go back to sometimes if I have nothing else to play and just want to have some fun and forget about real life for a little while the true meaning of escapism. I did pick up Selaco recently and having a blast with it enjoying it a lot

I don't think most people realize how important that opening talk is. Game Engines can be different when work is put in to make it different. They can be pushed to feel modern, retro, unique. You name it. They can be pushed to feel like other engines entirely. Look at how Kojima Productions used Guerrilla Games' in-house engine for Death Stranding and made it look and feel almost exactly like the Fox engine. Look at how Capcom made the RE Engine for the realistic immersive look and feel for Resident Evil. Now they use it for everything. Devil May Cry 5, Street Fighter 6, Dragon's Dogma 2. They're all so different, but use that same engine. Helldivers 2 is another example of taking an outdated engine to make something modern. And that's not to take away from the fact UE4/5 and Unity can be pushed to be different. It's that they're the easiest to get hands on with and start selling asset flips and early access games full of "placeholders."

Another good standalone to take a look at is the *_Ashes 2063_* series, and *_Total Chaos_* (if you love horror). Lastly, another source-port of *GZDoom* is in the works via *VKDoom,* which is primarily being used to create *_DISDAIN,_* and has integrated much of the *IdTech 2 (Quake) Engine* source code. *VKDoom* will be publicly released alongside *_DISDAIN_* when complete.

Im glad you found this corner of the gaming side, though obviously theres some bad apples but majority of the time i love what i see, theres on mod i love playing growing up (only 19 btw) was brutal doom, though its creator is not the best of humans per say but the mod he had created is just so good and it probably influenced many gzdoom modders and developers as such even maybe id software as well cause the on comparison i made with doom 2016 and brutal doom was the glory kills, i always wondered if they saw gameplay of brutal doom and saw the executions you can do in brutal doom during the long development of doom 2016 and decided to put it in the game. Though with the obviously change of the glory kill being all in first person as well as how to activate the feature. But my favorite part of brutal doom besides saving other doom marines and they help you but the fact you can flip off the demons, i just imagine the doomslayer giving a demon the bird before bashing their brains in 😂

Great video! Yea i don't really get the engine thing. sometimes i see the engine a game is using and think well all games previously like this on this engine haven't worked and i doubt this will, but with the variety of games on random engines my thoughts on that are definitely changing. even though it can be true because every engine has it's limits and does things in different ways all of that is becoming less of a thing with how advanced everything is. Also Transient being on UE4 compared to 5 makes perfect sense to me because it doesn't matter, you can still end up with basically the same product if you stick with the original idea.

The Selaco AI isn't truly "smart" but it is dynamic. Enemies are almost always moving and applying pressure which forces the player to be more dynamic. Several times I've found myself unintentionally slipping back into a "modern shooter" mindset (taking my time and expecting dumb AI to just sit and wait for me to go to it) only to get flanked and either die or lose most of my health.

Thank you for the video. Its rare for people outside the GZDoom community to take a deep dive into the creations of games made based on GZDoom. If you like Brutal Fate, then check out its free progenitor,Project Brutality where you can light up demons on fire with a napalm-infused grenade rounds in Hell. Also,if you like STALKER-ish GZDoom engine, try out Ashes 2063 which has just released a new chapter for its game for free. Hedon:Bloodrite is also great if you wish for RPG-ish game(i said -ish since it still use a projectile weapons but has a RPG-like features like free exploration and quests). GZDoom are full of amazing free and paid games on its title that i think the Overlord of reality matrix and space time continuum John Carmack would be proud of what his engine has created these days, even with his apparent dislike of making videogames these days.

Also Thief: The Dark Mod, which uses Doom 3's engine, and has a ton of community-made campaigns. Similarly, there are some Quake engine multiplayer games like Xonotic, Rexuiz, and Warfork.

Some think their escape from reality is to be had by oogling high fidelity "life like" graphics, without realizing all the escape is to found in forgetting yourself in the moment of fun, suspense and gaming-zen.

I really like the boomer shooter bubble. The people in there are always super supportive and all devs cheer each other for their releases. Especially the publisher New Blood is really great.

Yo won't regret goin down the boomer shooter rabbit hole. So many good games out there and they're not all copy-and-paste like many people say. Based video.

There's another game that I think is worth mentioning. I played it recently but I didn't play it for very long because I'm already actively playing too many games, so keep that in mind. I recently gave a game called "Void Bastards" a try, and I think it fits right in with a lot of these other games. It feels pretty similar to a "boomer shooter" but it's sci-fi and a roguelike. You're just flying through space and hopping onto random abandoned ships you come across in search of loot and other such things. It has a very pleasant art style too, it's EXTREMELY comic book like, and I actually enjoyed what I played. No guarantee it stays enjoyable, but I played about 3.5 hours and I liked it. I think I got it in a Humble Choice bundle a few years ago back when I used to subscribe to it every single month (of course, not ending up playing most of the games) and I just never played it. Didn't even realize I had it in my library. At the very least, I implore people to give it a try, because it was fun from the small amount that I played.
