Locksmiths are supposed to be able to pick locks, and make a key for a lock, then you'd have a new key and the devise, instead you got $300 worth of damage to your van. This guy was a butcher, you're lucky he didnt want non-monetary means of payment.

The worker did a lousy job, had no idea to solve it in the normal way. Even unskilled people can open such a tool, he damaged also the wheel and the seat, he should pay for that and not asking for Euro 190. Good luck and have a nice weekend. 🥰❤🍀

Exactly. It's a bit of an insult to real locksmiths to CALL that guy a locksmith. Any mechanic, with a cordless grinder, could have done that... and most of them would have covered the windscreen and dashboard with a blanket to avoid causing damage from sparks.

Lesson learned, hopefully. Spare ignition key and spare key for any anti-theft device should be hidden somewhere underneath the van... AND if you lose a key you should either get a replacement cut immediately or, in the case of an anti-theft device, just bin it and replace it. Also, that "locksmith" was a bit of a butcher. Sparks from a grinder will ruin your windscreen, dashboard, seats and carpet. A decent mechanic will always use cloths to cover stuff before grinding to prevent this. If they don't, be prepared to sacrifice an old blanket for this purpose. Seriously, though, check your windscreen. I bet if you run your fingernail across the inside of it there'll be a bunch of tiny bumps in it now, where the sparks have hit it and melted the glass. 😞 It isn't dangerous (probably) but it'll be cosmetically damaged.

I had a steering wheel years ago; I finally came to the realization you do not need to lock it. Any robber / criminal that sees that on the steering wheel, locked or not will move onto the next vehicle. The guy should have protected your seat ant taken much better care about your steering wheel.

No you hacksaw the steering wheel with a slice its around 28 seconds. You bend the steering wheel a slight but by hand and the lock falls off. Then you leave the lock on the ground where they parked it😂

After decades of camping and hiking and biking I've learned to tie a long ribbon of a really obnoxious color to anything that would be a trip "ender" if I were to lose it: keys, fire starter, water purifier, etc. If you ever happen to drop or misplace it, it's way easier to spot the bright orange or yellow, etc, in practically any environment. You can even double up the length to create a lanyard, now it's twice as hard to lose.

When you call someone you hope they are a specialist/expert in that field but its rarely the case. I really do feel your pain ame. I have a hatchback style back door on my van so just one big door that opens up like a hatchback car. Opened it a few days ago to get something and one of the hinges broke off! So here's me in layby holding on to the door trying to close it and stop it falling off alltogether. In the end I had to called RAC out and the lovely chap managed to close it and secure it. Just means I can't open it till i get new hindges. Oh the joys of Solo Van Life. You need Key Lanyards on all your keys for as often as you are at the beach. I have spent a lot of time camping in the dunes in California and know that a lanyard is necessary on every set of keys. A couple of 10 Euro lanyards are much cheaper than just one 190 Euro locksmith service call. But on the bright side it made for quite a dramatic video. Have a great week.

I just locked myself out of my shed for a few weeks and couldn’t mow the lawn haha. Almost called a locksmith. In the end, i had to use an angle grinder to get the lock off, just like he did on Gloria. Good job getting through that! Oh and guess what, i found my keys too! But by the time i found them, I’d already tried using bolt cutters on the lock, so the key didn’t turn all the way and then it broke off in the lock 🤣 from now on I’m only buying things with combination locks!

3:30 if you read the comments - please never cross your hands on the steering wheel like this. ALWAYS keep the steering wheel in such a way you can have a full control of it. It might save your life someday. Don't ask me how I know. And - just in case - while driving downhill for such a long period of time always use the gears to slow you down, not the brakes. The brakes will fade and eventually burn. Then your safety is in danger and obviously cost of repairing the brakes magically pops up on your to do list.... LOL NIce video as always :)

Put 2 electrical pvc boxes on you're van one in a dark spot in the van with a spare key and one underneath obviously with a cover and always keep a screwdriver handy to open the boxes with you're spare key in each if needed :)

I’m sorry that happened. You can buy a combination steering wheel lock that is keyless. And maybe attach an Air Tag to your keys. I’ve done so many things like that too. Hope this is your only hiccup for a long while. Happy trails!
