As a 70 year old mzungu from Scotland, I have very warm memories of Nairobi - lived there as a child from 1957 to 1967. Lived in Kileleshwa and Upper Hill, went to St George’s Primary and Upper Hill School, worshipped at St Andrew’s Church and learned to swim at the YMCA. First visit back to Nairobi was in 2001, and again in 2008. Nairobi has changed so much since 2001 and 2008, never mind 1967! I still remember the traffic jams coming into the city centre from the airport in 2008 - didn’t know about the new expressway, what a difference. The houses I lived in in Kileleshwa and Upper Hill have long since gone, and as for the city centre - wow! Thank you, African Tigress, for a fascinating video - asante kabisa sana! Lovely accompanying music too - is that a West African kora in some of the songs, or have I got that totally wrong?

Don't be discouraged. Kenya is full of contradictions between opulence that can match and surpass western standards and lack of it. Depending on your lifestyle, with little savings as the dollar stretches, you can live your entire life in this country without experiencing poverty or a glance of it. In the slums it's a totally different world. Nature is definitely a plus and the freshness of foodstuff. I've interacted with a couple of expatriates and they cry upon coming and leaving in disbelief. Some have even gone to the top most cities of the world but found Nairobi ideal amongst them all to a point of relocating back!... It's not a coincidence it's ranked 1st in Africa by expatriates and 6th globally!... You want peace of mind and zero insecurities, Nairobi it is... With about $1000, you are thrusted into the middle-class level and high chances you won't lack anything as far as utilities and social amenities are concerned.
