I love BattleTech. It was my first war game when I was a kid in the 90s. I had a starter box with cardboard cutouts that sat in a plastic stand. I played though college until it pretty much disappeared. After that it was mostly just the video games. I'm happy to see this coming back. If anyone is interested in trying it out, I recommend you play the BattleTech video game. Its turn based and while not exactly like the table top, its very close to that same experience. I just recently got into War Hammer. Its a very different experience to BattleTech.

Battletech has a HUGE following of people, old and now younger too.. it was probably one of the 1st games that got me into Wargaming in the 1980s -- I remember buying the 3025 Technical Readout when I was about 9 years old from my local comic shop just because the art on the cover was so cool. Led down a HUGE rabbit hole that has recently led to me picking up some of the newest stuff just to paint and maybe play again..

I can believe it Jay. The Battletech Kickstarter is all physical goods and all of their miniatures that they're developing these days are plastic models. They still make and sell the older sculpts via Iron Wind Metals but all of the stuff in the kickstarters is newer plastic models. Everything in BattleTech is pre-assembled and on base ready to play other than needing to be painted. Edit: Jay! You fool! Frank Darabont didn't direct Starship Toopers, Paul Verhoeven did. I expect repentce in the chat on Tues. -Evan

The Battletech kickstarter was a bit different. Most of the items were already being manufactured. They were testing the demand for some of the lower level items and rewarding early adopters. That also explains the super short delivery time for the products. If you want to try it, I HIGHLY recommend the Alpha Strike version of the game. It’s fast paced and works beautifully with combined arms forces.

Neofeudal big stompy robots without alien or fantasy elements, and with a consistent ruleset still containing the original '80s (now) retrofuturistic art, is certainly very different to 40K. Even though now there's the quickplay or larger scale Alphastrike option, as well as the crunchy classic Battletech, to broaden that appeal. 7.5M pledged by 23,654 backers is a good representation of it's success, although I think the IP was only kept alive by the video games.

I think what most people born like 1990/+ don't realize is that Batteltech/MechWarrior ARE known IP's; both of those are different views of the same universe (mech-centric vs pilot-centric), they got big just as Voltron left and somewhat in concert with Power rangers and grew influence first as cartoons, then as video games, and those brought people into the books and the miniatures, and back then a single Reaper metal mini was $8-$15, so the same kids watching the cartoons and playing the games could run down to the hobby shop and grab a blister with allowance money. Buying into CBT was 1 book and 1 mini, a little paint and some glue. Done-skies.

Ariadna is the one faction with like 21st-22nd century tech in a super sci-fi setting cuz they're lost colonists that got left to rot for like 100 years. Their lack of tech is just who they are because resource scarce survival.
@robsilvester6213
@robsilvester6213 Жыл бұрын
To further explain 'Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf' fig without getting too deep into lore, there is a native alien species on Ariadna (the Antipodes, primitive tribal lupines), which has sort of a Genestealer thing going on, in that their bites can transmit their DNA on to the victim's offspring. Hence, werewolves are real in Infinity, and kind of fill the 'big muscle' slot usually occupied by mech suits in the other more high-tech factions.
@patton3338

Battletech's value is how much has built up around the lore over time. It's not just the mechs, its the stories, the struggles between distinct factions, and the exploits of many important characters and pilots along the way. That's why I think it is on the verge of blowing up. Almost any mech/faction you could like has a mountain of lore behind it. You add in the resurgence of Battletech video games, the fact that Catalyst Games has been knocking it out of the park with their new miniature line, and the 40 years of fans waiting for BT to make its return... I think this will be it's moment in the sun.

Multiple factions is always a good thing for a wargame. That's probably why licensed wargames based on 3rd party IP's usually have issues and it's because there are usually only two factions to chose from. Unless you're Star Wars then only have two factions is fine. Even the old Star Fleet Battles (Star Trek) had ships for so many of the races that were encountered on the old TV show, you had plenty of factions to chose from.

Battletech is actually a bit older than 40K, and was bigger here in the U.S. Also, the lore is pretty much just as present as 40k, too, with at least a hundred novels. Also the general setting is pretty much Game of Thrones in space, no wacky aliens, no magical mystical rule bending, no grimdark bull crap. All human with our own foibles. Classic Battletech is very heavy with tons of math and book keeping, but there is a newer, streamlined version that is more modern, quick to learn, and quick to play called Alpha Strike. Also, to get a good feel the alpha strike box set is a curated introduction, with 2 sides, lore, novella, rules (ofc) and mission set. Highly reecomended!

The problem with Starship Troopers as a tabletop game is that there are really only two factions. Outside of Star Wars, most successful fictional wargames gave players multiple factions to chose from, right out of the gate. With only two factions it's almost better to just release it as a boxed set with only a bunch of pre-made scenarios for the players to play.

The CGL Battletech Mercenary KS reached $7.55 million & did $3mil in the first 48 hours. The owner Lauren even has unlocked the $8mil stretch goal which opened up so great mechs as add-ons (they would have been free if they reached it, but cool nonetheless). Also you really need to give it a try & you can download the rules for free from their site. So refreshing coming over from 40k & a company that are fans & players vs abusing their customers & content creators. Let's not forget Battletech is celebrating their 40th year this coming year. They have fans from the 80s & 90s & are still generating more & more new fans.

It can vary from time period to time period, but for the most part, if the tech exists at the point in time you are choosing to play, you can probably come up with an in-game excuse to use it. Like, don't expect an Inner Sphere merc company to have full clan omnimechs in 3050. But, if you play in the 'current' era, 3151, it's pretty much whatever you want. I think one thing that makes stuff like Batman or Harry Potter less of a draw is just how well-known the characters there are. Wargaming's always had an element of "Your dudes" to it. Hence why Star Wars is a great wargaming IP - a known property, but with plenty of faceless troopers you can make your own. I guess Marvel Crisis Protocol is the exception to that rule here, though. Edit: Also, Mongoose Publishing is still around. One of their flagships is the classic RPG Paranoia, which is still going strong.

AOT would be a cool wargame honestly with one side controlling the survey corp, garrison or military police with them using high movement and melee or ranged rockets, while the 2nd player plays various titans with a character titan like armored, collossal or female titan.

I am hesitant on Joytoy items because of the price. If I want action figure of that scale I would prefer to go for the Kotobukiya Hexa Gear and get a model kit action figure and vehicles at around 1/24th scale

I bought a load of these, few different t boxes, pre-ordered. They showed up and the paint is teeeerrible. Especially on the faces. They are made of a quite soft, rubbery material, the joints aren't great... If they cost 15 or 20 bucks each they would be fine, but at the PRICE the quality is not high enough.

@@dpad_dave wow, that sounds pretty bad for the price range. probably skipping them then.

I think the starship troopers game would definitely succeed today just considering the success of starship troopers terran command, not only is terran command a rts which would correlate well to a war game but theres even another star ship troopers game in the works and that will likely boost the popularity even more

I get the Kickstarter feeling. I helped on a project and production took so long I had moved 3 times before it was sent to one of my old addresses. 😢

I used to have alot of the starship trooper minis, even if you never play, it may be worth to just paint and set up like a display like some gaming stores do. Iirc the starter set is a low enough model count that it could fit on a shelf, and be ready for that 1 opportunity, and then can go back to looking nice on a wall

Attack on Titan would probably be much more suited to a video game, the factions would probably have to be Eldia and Marley, but like Eldians have grappling hooks, swords, some specific character titans and some guns and Marley has numbers, lots of titans, and a bunch of firepower, this would make it really hard to balance but honestly the models would be sick so this would be worth it

Alien vs Predator would be fun. Throw in marines and you have factions to build on.

Battletech was my first miniature wargame (late '80s). It has a long pedigree of quality and breadth of gaming (CCG, CMG, RPG, computer game - Mechwarrior; no boardgame oddly). You should at least try the Alpha Strike ruleset, which is modern and streamlined. As for the next IP for a minis game... I say Dune. I don't believe there has ever been a minis game on it (plenty of boardgames, CCG and RPG too). For me, nothing provides as much enjoyment as a good boardgame with a bunch of friends. If you like Root, then you should try Pax Pamir or Oath (both by the same designer), Chaos in the Old World, Twilight Imperium, Almoravid or Here I Stand (these last two are historical wargames, which is a niche of boardgaming you really need to dive into).

Mongoose publishing is still around…they make RPG’s mainly now. Also the Battletech Kickstarter is over 7 million and it’s all physical products. Man so many questions a single google search could answer 🤣

Games don’t die, and miniatures definitely don’t die; get into indie miniatures-agnostic games and you can play Starship Troopers vs Star Wars with different rules every day

Quick correction: the Kickstarter has reached a total of $7,548,796! ... and 69 cents Seriously Jay, I would recommend trying out Battletech at least once, if only to experience 30+ year old rules that hasn't changed all that much and is still fairly solid. Oh, and giant robots.

Ironically, a Kickstarter would be infinitely better than GWs current preview and preorder process. When it's previewed, you get to see the price and rough schedule, and they make enough for whomever wants to order.
