@@EDYKILLS Aaaaand that's my problem with the concept of "visual learners", because it implies that some people are not visual learners. Everyone is a "visual learner". What people mean when they say "thank you for making this easy to understand for visual learners like me!" is "Wow, you're pretty good at explaining things to a general audience. I learned something today, which I am not used to doing, because people are generally sh**t at explaining things properly" The idea that you, or someone else, are a "visual learner" was a lie told to you by your teachers as a way for them to excuse their sh**tty teaching skills.

In 1981 i started airbrushing t-shirts while in college, i was a totally slow beginner. One day a local young airbrush artist worked with me at the tourist shop in panama city beach florida. A young girl came and and asked if we could airbrush a photo of jim morrison onto a t-shirt, she had a round button about the size of a quarter with morrison's photo on it . He was just filling in for our friend so he looked at me and said ''You wanna do this ?'' I said no way, i was way too slow and awkward with airbrush to try that for a paying customer. He took it from her and told her ''come back in 45 minutes''. She smiled and ran off. For the next 45 minutes i watched Wes Hardin freehand airbrush a large portrait of Jim Morrison onto a t-shirt and i was in awe of his speed and talent. Back then the local guys had a policy ''No penciling, no laying out any lines except with freehand airbrush'' They didn't even allow pencils to be in the airbrush booth lol. Young guys then were into challenging themselves. I've never seen an artist do something that amazing since, literally in 45 minutes it was complete and looked not only accurate but had feeling and emotion to it and was absolutely beautiful , he'd made the hair fade out off to the sides of the shirt, it was something to see. Wes had been airbrushing for a few years and he'd tired of portraits, i think that day he wanted to show off for me. When she picked it up her mouth dropped open with amazement. She was as happy as she could be. Little did she know she'd gotten a piece of fine art that spring day, and my understanding of airbrush was never the same

Speaking as a comparatively new airbrusher, the method Scott demonstrates for cleaning, by cleaning the cup into a container *before* you spray cleaner *through* the airbrush, was a revelation for me. It makes cleaning so much quicker and easier, and my hesitation to use the airbrush much because of the labor involved in cleaning between colors has been drastically reduced!

What I personally like the most is that you’re not cutting your video every 3 seconds, making your head snap all over the place and voice sounding unmatched. I guess people do that because they don’t have good speaking skills, so they remove the awkward pauses and it ruins everything. You, sir, have excellent camera and presentation presence. Thank you! Am a spray painter by trade. A cheapy face mask is fine for acrylics BUT the harmful (cancer causing/liver killing) compounds in solvent based paints are readily absorbed through your eyes and skin. Respirator + gloves don't really cut it. So.. Scott's wife if you're reading, you know what to do!

Subscribed! I just got an airbrush for scale models (mostly Star Trek) and used it for the first time a few days ago. I then realized I need more education and found this video after some how-to searches on KZbin. I've watched a number of them, but this is the one every one should watch. Your diagram and explanation of what's going on in there when you pull the trigger is what most tutorials gloss over but its the kind of detail I needed. Well done!

I have several airbrushes that run the gamut. Siphon feed, side feed, gravity feed, single action, double action, etc etc. I decided to try a different type of airbrush and I got it this last Tuesday. I tried it out and I love it. It’s the easiest one for me to use. It’s the Neo TRN-1. Working the trigger is so much easier for me. Pull it back and paint, then let the trigger go forward to stop. I realize the regular dual action with the button type trigger on top is no problem, but for me it always has been. Anyway, I’m looking forward to using my new airbrush. I've been using an airbrush with an air filter, with a quality sensor in it in the room for a few months. By doing this I've learnt one important thing, once you've finished airbrushing the air quality in the room stays really bad for something like 45-60 minutes after I finish. I've taken to leaving my face mask on while I clean up after I've finished.

@@AsheramK I also noticed that if you just have an external window or door open in the room the air quality doesn't get AS bad, and it gets better quicker once you've finished. It's obvious, but some people seem to think having a window open on the other side of the room is pointless unless there is something blowing the air out.

You really shouldn't be airbrushing in your home unless you're using some kind of air extractor or airbrush booth. Paint particles including acrylics are seriously bad for you.

I build 1/12 & 1/6 scale dioramas, and have come to the conclusion that airbrushing would save me time, and heighten the level of my graffiti on each project. Only so much I can do with brushes and markers. That said, of all the “airbrush for beginners” videos I’ve watch on KZbin, this one has, by far, been the most helpful and beneficial. The fact that you broke down basic mechanics and even threw up a graph on how to avoid speckling and spiderwebbing was the $#!T! So, thanks. &☮️

Scott, solid vid! Best I've seen on the subject. One suggestion? We clear our paint cups the same way, but I use a sciency "wash bottle". It floods the cup, ensuring those pesky dried bits and pieces are washed out. Thanks for the info and entertainment. Digging the podcast too!

The only thing I would add as advice to the first time user would be to suggest getting a ream of cheap printer paper and just play the heck out of the airbrush. I feel like I'm really just echoing others, because I literally am, but you hit a homerun for me with this video. I bought an airbrush kit, having used commercial paint sprayers in my younger days and currently am a house painter, thinking it would be a breeze. Just opening the kit was super intimidating and I had no frame of reference like I thought I would. Watched 4 other videos, that were for my specific kit, and learned nothing other than it was a decent price. Even in a tear down video I learned next to nothing. You freaking nailed it, dude. Love your videos but as a airbrush salesperson and instructor of 26 years, I have the say the larger the nossle/needle +quality of the airbrush are the most important factors for someone new to airbrushing. A 0.5 nossle size makes for less clogs= more likely someone new to airbrushing wont get fustrated and give up on airbrushing.

Siphon feed airbrushes are very common. The nice part about them is you can get small cups, not the bottles, for them and you can quickly change colours. Nozzle/needle size is more to do with paint quality than detail. Better paints has smaller pigment so you can use a finer setup. Bigger pigments, like the ones in brush ranges, will need a bigger setup. No amount of thinning with reduce the pigment. It only thins the binder. Technically ALL airbrushes mix externally. The nozzle extends to outside the nozzle cap, even if it is just a hair width. And the air only comes into contact with the paint after the nozzle cap. Great explanation of airpressure vs paint visosity. Great explanation of trigger control. Great demo with that space marine. Great tip with the needle movement to get the paint out of the seal area.

Great job, sir. Best airbrushing video tutorials I have found and viewed. I am a complete airbrush noob, but inclined to all of the technical aspects of any tool I use and how they work, including strengths and weaknesses, pros and cons. I am getting back into scale aircraft modeling after a 40-year hiatus, and, being 57, have less patience for errors and mistakes. Windshield washer fluid is awesome for cleaning acrylics out of an airbrush. And its dirt cheap @ $1 gallon. I buy it by the case when its on sale because it's now multi-use for me.

I'll tell you guys the single biggest and most frustrating problem I had starting airbrushing and the solution - I was experiencing constant clogging. It felt like I couldn't even get through a half hour painting session without experiencing a clog, much less a big batch of troops without having to stop and thoroughly clean the airbrush several times. The longer the painting session, the worse it got. One of the effects of this was that I thought I was mixing my paint to thick so I ended up over thinning, causing even more problems, bit still did not fixing the clogging issue. The culprit turned out to be the cheap disposable pipe cleaners you can get at virtually any store. They shed tiny nearly transparent fibers which would inevitably work their way into the paint and clog up the tip. Stopping to clean the airbrush in the middle of a painting session would just make the problem *worse* as it would deposit more fibers into the airbrush. If you're using the disposable pipe cleaners, I suggest you switch to a mix of the reusable nylon type pipe cleaners and interdental brushes. I cannot stress enough how big of a change this small thing was for me. It took airbrushing from the realm of a being a massive headache to something I really enjoy doing. I recently did an art project where spent nearly every free hour I had for two weeks straight with a combination of four different airbrushes where I was honestly pretty terrible about keeping them clean and I had exactly zero clogs. On a related note, I would also advise you don't use paint brushes that like to shed bristles or are otherwise decaying to mix your paint and don't use paper towels to clean the tip either.

Brand new to airbrushing here. @12:49 one of the very 1st tricks I learned from my dad 40+ years ago with old rattle can paints: shake can(s) for 2-5 mins before using, then turn the can upside down and spray for a sec or two to clear/ clean the nozzle before replacing the cap and storing for use on another model :)....same principle here, and thank you, I sub'd!

That was by far the best introduction to airbrushing I have seen yet & I have seen a few, I used to be right into model making back in the late 80's & early 90's & pretty much the only paint the basic hobbiest had was Airfix in those little tins, & if you wanted to stick to the given paint jobs they sometines cost as much as the actuall model, this has given me hope to now do the models I have always wanted with a decent paint job, thanks for the tips.

I did use diving air tank instead of a compressor. Just had to figure out an adapter between different threads and I was good to go. It was pretty awesome since the air was already dry, and it was super silent, just the hiss. And I guess you could take it wherever you need without worrying about electricity :P Downsides were that I had to get it refilled from time to time, though a 15L tank did last me a good while and I had a luxury of having a few of those, so I could switch if needed. And it took a bit more space than a small compressor.

Thanks Scott. Haven't bothered learning airbrushing because if the hassle of getting all the info together and stuffing up. Someone just bought me a Dark Imperium set and I think this might be a good time to learn so I can skip the basecoat by hand marathon.

Top tip for mixing paints ... Covid Lateral Flow Test plastic pipettes. Mix into those and make your colour palette. Use a sharpie to mark mixing quantities on the pipettes for consistency. Easy to shake and mix. Easy to swap between colours and you can store in the fridge between sessions.
