But ... Guizhou is NOT the poorest province. In terms of GDP per capita it ranks 25th out of China's 31 provinces and equivalent administrative units in the mainland (excluding Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR). The poorest one is Gansu province in the northwest using the same metric.
The street are clean, no homeless or beggar, people enjoying their lifestyle in the way they want, clear and stinkless river in the middle of the city....What could you ask more for?

Let me explain what the 'Golden Spider' is - actually it's '筑' - an instrument usually used by Dong & Miao. Guiyang was called "筑城 ZhuCheng" in the past, it means 'The City of Zhu', "筑"(Zhu) is an ancient minority instrument originally from Guiyang. That massive square in your video is called '筑城广场' (ZhuCheng Square)I really miss the hometown, especially Huaxi Beef Noodles and ChangWang noodles. Btw '老干妈'(LaoGanMa) chilli sauce is from Guiyang!

Hey Jason, I wasn’t surprised when Jiao said the ‘golden spider’ is a musical instrument of the local ethnic people, however, you totally surprised me when you asked; “布依 or 苗”. It appears you probably know more than you show. FYI, the instrument is call 芦笙,mostly used by 苗,瑶 and 侗 minorities. Also, the first time when I visited Guiyang in 2002, NanMing river was very polluted and stink, a lot of garbage littered along its banks, but now the water appeared to be very clean and the garbage disappeared. I’m sure it’s a result of government’s anti-pollution campaign and the increased awareness about the importance of environment from Guiyang’s residents. 贵阳加油! And I will become one of the residents in 2022 when I retire.

That's what strikes me every time I went back to China, that it's actually IMPROVING all the time. Local city governments really want to improve the infrastructure. A little bit odd, but a good way to assess improvement is to look at the state and the accessibility of (public) toilets because it's the least glamorous and overlooked issue.
When I went to this city nearly 40 years ago, the host had to put me at a guest house 20 km away, as it was not safe for foreign visitors to stay downtown. What a huge change, great for China.

For the same reason, Guizhou also belongs to China's Third Frontier area where China built a lot of defense industries in 1960s-early 1980s when China was preparing for wars. The Third Frontier movement helped the industry development for the remote SW China a lot at very high cost.

About why the city name is Gui Yang. In Chinese language, Yang can mean the south side of a mountain or the north side of a river. The reason is that China is on the northern part of the earth. The south part of mountain can be directed shined by the sun so that it is called Yang. While the north side of the mountain is called Yin. So Gui Yang means it is at the south side of a mountain called Mountain Gui.

I am from the poorest province. Now I am doing some research in Berlin for my doctor thesis. Actually , around 2000 Guiyang has been built like the video shows. After 2010 the local government focused on building new downtown 金阳新区、观山湖区… The poorest part of Guizhou is deep inside mountains. Guizhou is all plateau. It's quite hard to build streets. Thanks to the Peking government ,they spent a lot of money to build highest bridge between mountains in Guizhou. And the minority groups are helped a lot to develop tourism. 50% of students in Guizhou are not Han group. But they have same rights to receive higher education. For minority groups in our province can add 20 score in entrance exam of college高考. I am Han group,I don't have ,but I can understand. I have more resources in Guiyang compared to rural places in Guizhou. But compared to Peking, Guiyang has very less education and medical resources. Anyway, thanks to communists. If China break into pieces, we can't survive. That's what I told to foreigners in Berlin in 2019. Hongkonger is not minority group, should not have priority.
