OMG! Your collection is just multiplying but it's so much fun so have different color pens to play with all your inks. It's just nice to relax and have some fun with pens and inks.

Moonman (later renamed Majohn for the international market due to Kaweco trademarking the name Moonman) was the first Chinese company to release its version of the VP/Capless. The A1 is available with and without clip as an alternative for users who're on a budget and/or feel the clip on the VP gets in the way. It's a metal pen and the parts are interchangeable with Pilot. (Cf. Inkquiring Mind's video on replacing the Moonman nib unit with a Pilot one after his original nib unit leaked the contents of an entire cartridge on his desk.) The A2 corresponds to the Pilot Decimo (the lighter, slimmer version). Its plastic body and faceted design make it easy to recognize. The A3 corresponds to the Capless LS. Originally, the only nib option was EF, but it wrote more like a Japanese MF. It took a while, but there are more nib options available. (Platinum came out with a retractable fountain pen about the same time Moonman did, but I don't like the design; according to reviewers, it's also a PITA to ink.) Jinhao is a new player in this particular corner of the fountain pen market. Some people call this a ripoff, but the design patent expired and is in the public domain. Fountain pens with retractable nibs are really convenient for quickly jotting down notes. And the Chinese models are a good choice for people on a budget or if you're unsure whether they're for you.

When is the National Handwriting Day? How are you curating your purchases? A pen podcast, Hemingway Jones, featured a brief segment where as a banker in his day job, he (whose wife also is presumably employed) discussed how to go about building a pen collection. Until I saw this video I had no plan, and ended up buying duplicate Jinhao pens. They were very inexpensive, but duplicates nonetheless. Some guidelines he suggested were to make sure each pen purchase is for a reason. So, I am also learning how to be discerning in this regard. I have a group of mini Mahjong, and Jinhao pens that are fun and easy to use. I prefer Asian and now Indian manufactured pens and especially nibs. JoWo on my Asvine V200 Titanium would be an exception -- almost -- but I wasn't up to the extra money that upgrade cost. And, Asvine came through -- the nib is a smooth, writes every time nib. That was a satisfying purchase for me. However, with arthritis and carpel tunnel that pen, though light and beautiful, is available for resale or trade. I don't use it often and I think my best bet is to get on toward the next flex pen phase -- maybe a vintage pen with a great nib or Urushi finish and a great nib.

My husband got his Jinhao, and he’s been using it all week long! He’s enamored with it. He did need to use a wetter ink-Noodlers instead of Pilot-and do some downstrokes too, but he loves it so much now. On the other hand, I got my first Kakuno and it’s AMAZING.

Yay! So happy to hear he’s been loving the Jinhao! Sounds like he found the perfect ink combo. I find Noodlers works well with this type of nib. And of course, I’m beyond thrilled you're enjoying your Kakuno! It’s such a fun pen 🥰

@ The Kakuno is a solid pen. Many redditors in r/fountainpens say they have more expensive pens in their collection, but their Kakuno gets used more. Don't let FOMO drive you to more pen purchases in a rush. I like my Family Edition one.

I adore Jinhao pens and glad you've enjoying them! At the risk of feeding your burgeoning addiction even more, I suggest you pick up a Jinhap 51A and Jinhao 82 Mini as well when you're next tempted. I think you might like how they feel.

Enjoy your pens. Be careful sliding down the rabbit hole 😂 Caution: the TWSBI Eco Expresso with Bronze trim is coming. Just in time for Valentine’s Day. But seriously, the jinhaos are addictive. They are so reasonably priced and fun. Perfect for experimenting and learning about fountain pens.

Thanks to a comment in a previous video, I now have an empty Majohn cartridge filled with ink in my blue pearl Jinhao, and it takes so much more ink than the converter in the Jinhao. It seems I really like writing with the capless pens. I've filled the blue Jinhao with Octopus Fluids Sheen "Unicorn" and the sheen is showing! It's never shown in my other pens with broader nibs. I'm so happy! Wheee! 😆❤️👏

If you ever want a new look to the Jinhao 82, you can swap the end parts of the pen. On the cap you have to unscrew it and on the barrel you have to pull. But be careful not to loose the golden ring. For example you can put the grey end parts on your brown Jinhao 82. I have 5 Jinhao 82 in different colors and often change the end caps between them.

To be more specific you want to push down just enough to spread the tines a little. A lot of these chinese nibs are very stiff hence the "like writing with a nail" description. But even these stiff nibs have a point of no return. For more normal looking nibs and not these vanishing point/hooded nibs you want to put your finger on the nib around where the split ends where the breather hole is to ensure you don't lift the nib off the feed and bend the nib in the wrong place.

I definitely like matching inks to the pen as well, even though it can be problematic 😅 I also find the economical pens fun to play with at a low investment. Less afraid to play around! I have broken Jinhao 82s before, can crack over time, it’s pretty cheap plastic!

I have 2 Majohn A1s (not the A2, but similar) and love them. Had to return my first one for a replacement because I couldn’t fix the dry starts, but both work great! After seeing your previous video I decided I wanted to try the Jinhao 10…I’m still waiting for mine in gradient gray. They are getting popular, so even Amazon is taking awhile to get stock in the more popular colors. Jinhao 82s were my first fountain pens. I have several and they all work well. It is fun to collect different colors. I also have a Jinhao 100 that is beautiful and a smooth writer. I doubt I will EVER let myself pay more than $100 or more for a pen - so for me right now my Ellington and Wordsworth & Black pens are “fancy” 😂

Be careful on how strongly you make your down strokes. You can ruin(spring) your tines with too much force.

I love brown inks too. My favorite at the moment is Herbin Lie de The (Tea Brown). Writes really well with all nib sizes. Also, I wanted to let you know in case you don’t that the Majohn empty ink cartridges fit Pilot pens as well. Someone said that somewhere online. I just don’t remember where LOL. I ordered some from AliExpress and they do fit. I have one in one of my Kakunos currently. Haven’t tried it in a Jinhao yet but it will probably work.

I think it is a wonderful 'rabbit hole'. There are worse addictions (lol). Take a look at the Jinhao 9019 or 9016. You might find the 9019 too large. The 16 is smaller. Both ink converters hold a very large amount of ink. I found the nibs really nice.

I just received my 4 jinhao 10, they all worked well. What I observed is, black ink does not work with them. I used the jet black diamine ink. But when I replaced it with havasu turquoise diamine ink, it wrote very well and nicely. Also, I tried putting the red dragon diamine ink on one of my jinhao 10, it did not wrote as well, had difficulty in flowing, unlike with other blue inks I used with my jinhao 10.

I am bad, welllll, kinda sorta. 😂 My brother used fountain pens like 30 years ago?! So I tell him about my pens and he was like, which one should I get and I immediately was like, the Pilot Vanishing Point. 😂 😂 😂 Sent him the link and the nib size because I know his handwriting, the ink he should get, everything. He calls me back and said, I thought you were spending on average $20 per pen?!?! That aint $170 for this here Pilot VP (said with a VERY southern accent!!!) I replied, well you work in the oilfield and you are driving executives around you make a lot of money, my on average $20 pen taking care of Mom budget is a lot less than your $170 pen on the high salary oil rig budget!!!! Besides you don’t want the executives to laugh at you?! 😂 😂 He was quiet for a minute and said, that is true, I am getting the VP. 🙂🙃🙂🙃 😂 I mean I can’t even with this guy, we call him Prop Man because when he does anything he has to have all of the stuff to do it. I predict he will have a $500 or more pen before the year is over! I have also acquired from here at home one of those ceramic open mouth frogs used for kitchen sponges?! Mine is circa 1980! 😂 My Mom made a little pillow to fit in his mouth where the angle is barely, barely slight downward. My pens look adorable in it! I also acquired a $5 standing Sasquatch and Yeti that both work holding a pen. Oh and a Darth Vader from Dollar General!
