I feel like my burnout is finally lifting and I wanted to talk about what helped and how my pre order list has changed. I'm no longer able to maintain a high rate of figure collecting and even if I could, I don't want to. I have a beautiful collection and I'm happy to add to that much more slowly and deliberately from now on.

Just wanted to add a couple of things. First, if you're not interested in a figure I "recommend" then do not get them! I meant more that if you were on the fence about it or worried about quality issues and such, that they would be worth it since they turned out well! Second, Everyone's collection and collecting habits are personal and that's what makes the figure collecting community fun!! I've currently found a way of collecting that works for me and positively impacts my relationship with my collection and collecting but that might look different than what works for you. So stick to it and have fun!

As a baby collector with just a couple scale figures, I can’t say how much I appreciate seeing this video! Social media tends to push “buy buy buy!!! more more more!!!” in every way possible. Sometimes it’s overwhelming seeing these huge beautiful collections, thinking of all the figures on my dream wishlist… So I just can’t thank you enough for this reminder to appreciate what you already have, instead of thinking about all the stuff you don’t! This is such a refreshing viewpoint, because figures are expensive, beautiful pieces of art, and collections are better as curated and personal to each collector :)

With all due respect…why are so many of you like this?? Every time I see a huge collection online, I simply …well, appreciate it and view it as the art collection that it is…faaaar removed from myself. Why on earth do you guys always feel the need to compare yourselves, your lives, your owned items to strangers online? Why do you guys feel the need to be dictated by strangers online? So if they say buy, you feel you need to buy? If they say…don’t buy like in this video…then you feel better? That’s still being controlled by strangers online. The relief and happiness you feel is very obvious in this video! I’m so glad you’re rediscovering your love for the hobby and are engaging with it in a way that is healthier and more manageable. I also cancelled about half of my preorders earlier this year, and feel extremely good about it. I’m so happy with my choice as well. The feeling of appreciating your current collection more when you have fewer figures coming in is so real.

The most valuable thing I’ve learned throughout collecting is that a curated and deliberate collection is waaay cooler than simply buying everything. The collection eventually looks better and becomes very personal to the collector.

Can't put into words how much your channel is helping me at this stage in my life. I don't collect anime stuff but I do have a similar vice in Hot Toys figures. I've teetered on the brink of massive credit card debt for almost the entirety of the past year as my collection swelled from five figures to nearly 100. Totally at capacity for display space but have new deliveries almost everyday. Can't hang on to money to save my life as I blow thousands a month to get my credit cards under control. Tell myself I'll stop just to relapse when I pay off my statement. Feel like my 20s are passing me by. Spend my off time sleeping the days away until the next paycheck. Hate the situation I've put myself in. Disgusted at my lack of discipline and how materialistic I am. Emotionally drained from the stress. The hobby consumed me.

I'm sorry to hear I'm not the only one with preorder burnout issues. I was so worried about being able to pay for everything that my anxiety level went through the roof. I finally got smart enough to solve the problem by cancelling 30 preorders. I also made myself take a good look at my collection to determine what type of figures I truly love. Then I sold those I could live without. Now that I have a firmer idea of what I really, really like, I'm able to pass up a lot of figures that I once would have preordered without a second thought. I still end up with a figure now and then that doesn't meet my expectations, but that's mostly because the finished product didn't live up to the prototype. So happy to hear that you're doing better! Those are amazing ways to deal with burnout and have a healthier attitude towards figure collecting or any hobby in general. Using the price of experiences is a great way to see if the figure is worth it. I personally use the price of dinners or outings with friends or family as a way to justify my purchases... My collection hasn't grown a lot since but life has been a lot more enjoyable lol.

I've collected figures for almost 20 years now. It took me quite a few years to learn to buy what you LOVE, not just everything. I'm currently on a small hiatus from figures due to school, I'm appreciating the break because now i miss the collecting process so much! Happy to see you doing better and able to feel comfortable making figure content as I really enjoy your videos 😊 I also have cut back; I have limited space and like everyone limited money so it was the best thing to just cut down overall and I haven’t had any regrets! I still really enjoy collecting I feel it’s really important to remember that there is no ‘prize’ for like speed running your collection so it’s ok for it to take years and years to get your collection the way you want it. I hope to cancel some figures too. Its very relieving when you realize you don't need every figure you sort of like and how much money you save by cancelling even a single one. It helps to appreciate the ones you already own and to remember that they're a luxury and not a necessity. The rising cost, unknown shipping cost upon preorder, plus lack of space are major factors in the hobby becoming more stressful than fun. And there's always new tempting figures, which adds to the constant debate of 'which one should I pick or keep' that drives me nuts. Plus a small, coordinated collection looks better imo as it makes figures stand out more instead of drowning in a sea of them where you're eyes don't know where to focus. That's when I realized I probably need to think critically about what I really want and the endgoal of my collection since hobbies shouldn't stress you out. Simply looking pretty isn't going to cut it anymore, there will always be a new gorgeous figure coming out. At the end of the day they're just pretty plastic display with no other uses, and I'd rather save up for a fun trip at this point. I still love the hobby, but gained a new healthier perspective on it.

I’ve been struggling with figure collecting burnout too, it was nice hearing your thoughts on your burnout, because it helped me sort out my feelings about mine as well. it also doesn’t help that I lost my job a few months ago, so I was kind of forced to stop spending, and I’m still unemployed, living with my parents until I get a major surgery done this summer, but!! it’s given me a lot of time to also think about my collection. I have a better grasp of how I want to expand it going forward, and I’m ready to take it all at a slower pace. also!!! I absolutely LOVE the Aoba and Koujaku native figure, I was keeping up with it for SO LONG, but I wasnt able to preorder them. ahh, I am SO EXCITED to see them in your collection!!! I will live vicariously though your collection until I can get them eventually lololol but anyways, it’s very nice to see you back!! Great video. Interesting to hear the perspective of overextending yourself financially for figures. I've kept spending relatively under control and have sometimes found myself feeling jealous of folks with massive collections and don't think about some of the challenges that may come with one. I also really like the approach of getting merch outside of figures at conventions and that's one thing I try to do myself. I can definitely relate to you in this video. In good conscience, I can say I'm not going to be making any preorders after this year. I hate having to pass on a lot of beautiful figures that I could have seen myself preordering but it's been so mentally stressful for me to pay for them. Figures are expensive and they're a luxury. And I can't do it anymore. Instead, I also want to pay for travel/concerts because I know I'd enjoy that more than waiting for a package to come in and just throw it into the collection. Plus, it also helps that I'm feeling satisfied with what I do have.

I've had to cut down on figure collecting too and cancel a LOT of preorders, I still have more than I would like preordered right now but I'll probably end up cancelling even more (especially since a lot of the figures I have preordered keep getting pushed back and my excitement for them has gone down a lot). Thanks for sharing! I’ve had a similar burnout with collecting this year and have been trying to correct it. For me, I sold some of my figures and decided to move to a different city over the summer while I only have online classes, leaving all of my figures behind in storage. I’m going to spend 3 months away from figures altogether just focusing on other aspects of life, making new friends, and going to concerts and events I would’ve told myself before I can’t afford because of collecting. I’m almost a week into living in my new temporary spot and it’s going well. Believe it or not, I haven’t died living in a room not surrounded by figures. Win! I’m so excited for you that you’re going to Japan (at the same time as Gwyn!?)! Hope to see some video from your trip. It would definitely inspire me to keep selling and canceling and get my butt over there finally. I appreciate the update! Keep on living. ^^

Congratulations! You are on the right path, which I am also following - more slowly it seems to me. The last two years have been and are still too stressful financially for me as well. Unfortunately, I couldn't (and won't be able to) cancel much, so I order much less and only what satisfies me completely and will improve the collection. I still have to work on selling the 'excess' goods, I just haven't come to terms with the loss yet. A few figures in 2024 up to this month are a significant difference compared to last year in the same month. I believe that both of us are doing quite well.

Ironically, I got into collecting Nendoroids right around the time you stopped collecting them. The hobby adds up for sure, but it's important to set your own boundaries to make sure you find yourself actually enjoying it! For me, I got my tax returns back and use that as a cap on my spending in the hobby. (Already half-way through it sadge) What we do in the Shadows is hilarious, but make sure to watch the movie if you haven't discovered it already! 3 key things I learnt about getting figures. Firstly, pre-ordering is something best done if the figure is a MUST. Secondly, you only have so much space, so understand that some figures may be out the door eventually if you keep buying. Lastly, ideally you want to see the figure in person as the details are always lesser than the original images for the product. I got 1 pre-order and 2 resin statues left then I am most likely done with the hobby as I am happy with my display as is! Good luck going forward with the hobby!

Can totally understand the burnout and financial stress factor. I'm about to hit the big 3-0 and really feeling the "need to save" now more than ever. Figure collecting, or rather collecting, is one of my many hardcore interests so it'll never leave my life and really, outside of the extremely limited (like self produced) figures will pretty much be available one time or the other, there's no real rush in regards to them. 💖 At the end of the day, figures and statues are stuff and things that can be replaced or replicated. I've struggled with a bit of shopping addiction and being on youtube and seeing huge hauls just kinda enables the behavior and now i am definitely more selective in my figures and manga. but yeah, the debt and stress isn't worth it. i'd rather get 1 figure that makes me super happy and doesn't hurt me financially than get 10 figures that i plan out thru the year and i gotta scrap and save every penny to get them home and only be like, kinda happy with them i guess. I know I'm selling some of my "impulse" purchases at the time, and it's been a pain to go through that process, but it's helping clear space + giving me budget for figures I'm actually excited for in the future! I have the YoYo Studios Makima coming next year, and I think that will be my last big purchase for a long time (or the Reno/Boise Azur Lane bunnies if they release after her because AL owns my life), but it's been nice to have a collection I can start to try and coordinate my room around without new stuff coming ever couple weeks!

I just started collecting figures and I only really want around 20 figures that are from shows or games I have alot of nostalgia for e.g. pokemon, Inu yasha and fairy tail. Since the shows/characters I have nostalgia for aren't going to expand, I'm fairly safe from excessive ordering. As you said, I'm only ordering the ones I am really excited for. I want to be able to give each figure the love that they deserve.

I saw a video where another figure collector made a good point about preordering figures. So many figures are now selling for much cheaper in the after market and used bins. It's almost not worth preordering a figure anymore unless you absolutely want to guarantee that you'll get it. I've decided to hold off on preordering certain figures because I really believe I can get them cheaper later. It also helped me prioritize what I actually want.

When I first got into figure collecting I definitely was spending way beyond my means too. I'd get that payment request from amiami or wherever and pay it and then panic after. Eventually I took a long break from figure collecting and now I only buy a few a year, if that. Funny thing is now I'm moving and I have so many figures I have to move and I realize I don't care about a lot of them anymore. All the things you said. It's a weight off your shoulders canceling figures when your not spending so much on, let's be real, a plastic figure. I now see the price first on a figure and work out postage etc and convert to my currency. It has to be a special figure now to make me spend. I had 6x figures for June. It was stressing me as 3x were 1/4 between 31,000 - 39,500 jpy! Think of the postage!! Now it's only the X10 bunny and two 1/7 EVAs. Relief!! Also I believe the market has hit it's peak so time for mftrs to charge sensible prices. After all 2yrs ago I bought 1/4 fishnet bunnys at 24,000 jpy and shipping 6,500 ems. Look at the cost now. Amiami recently replaced the Jinx figure when the parcel was damaged and the ems to UK cost them 9,000 jpy!!! On a 1/7 scale. It was all free for me though and I kept the original figure too.

I recently did the same thing with all my PO's. The prices just keep going up and quality keeps going down. I'm a big nendoroid collector but my last few nendoroids and pop up parades have had some really upsetting defects (paint and sculpt) 💔. I just can't do it anymore, I'm making a conscious decision not to collect PuPs anymore and no nendoroids that have hand and arm seams. I'm sooooo disappointed with the recent Tsubasa - Sakura and Syaoran nendoroids in particular. ☹️ I think we all have that figure too that we know we should cancel, but just can't lmao! I'm going through that struggle with the Racing Miku 2021 Private Version. Logically I know she's overpriced and will probably go down in the aftermarket, but also the shipping on GSCUS is soooo cheap ($6 UPS on preorder) and she is so freaking cute. I would probably end up spending the same amount after release with the increased shipping. 😅 She doesn't come out until February 2024 so I also have plenty of time to decide at least haha.

That’s me with resin figures. You can’t really cancel them, so you lose the deposits, but some I impulse pre-ordered and just never completed the purchases

I am a huge Predator fan, Neca Predator figures were a huge thing to me for 5 years, yet mid 2021 I just lost interest and was burnt out. No issues with the figures just I got stuff and felt hollow....so I get it. Same with Model kits, with trying to math out spending and getting (Shipping has gotten so expensive) yet also not building the model kits, so I needed to stop. I have downsized my hobbies to small and more affordable things than spreading myself thin in money and time.

Nothing wrong with admitting that things we love to spend money on are sadly out of our reach, Take me for example, nothing would make me more happier if I could get my hands on a Neo Pixel light-saber but they pricey as fuck and I got adult things I have to spend on but the dream is still alive. There are people out there that want a sports car, a boat or a big house but thats okay as long as you can have a smile on your face each day then thats all that matters

The issue with the figure companies are pretty easy, in my opinion. The limited and less production of a single anime figure as a strategy to force the people to buy or pre-order right away, even if they dont have saved money for the item. If they would have higher production, the people would have enough time to save and spend. It feels like, buy now or you wont get it, which is not they nicest thing. It can cause stress and maybe also wrong order decision. I still love collecting and I'm not that crazy affected by it, but still not real fair to all those collectors. By the way, great video :D

I.... honestly i never thought of collecting from this perspective (its also probably way harder for you as a content creator) Sorry for the tangent but i dont think I've ever talked about my collecting thought process before - The figures i do buy are already pretty limited, i only care for vocaloid/miku and shows/games i deem extremely important in my life (anything i grew up with or have been obsessed with for a long period of time. So "characters of the season" have no interest for me either) for example. I'd skip on the card captor sakura figure. While i find it extremely pretty- I never got into the show and don't feel connected to that IP. I also avoid figures that, design wise, are okay but don't stand out to me. (Which...with miku is very easy lol. E.g i prefer the solwa streetwear miku over her other streetwear figures) Or i already have a figure that looks similar/better. Fundamentally, I like my collection to represent me and my true likes. (Obviously original figures are okay mostly. But then it comes down to how truly unique they are and if I'll ever see something like it again)

Part of why I couldn't keep making videos is that I recognised I was buying things I didn't necessarily care about for content, and I really have gone beyond my means and am having to pay off my credit card now. We need more people talking about this as it's a lot more common than people realise -- especially when times get tough and anyone deals with retail therapy as a coping mechanism ... but I hope things keep improving for you! Also I cancelled over 30 orders because I went insane with it, I'm so relieved and am trying to get a prepaid card for amazon jp now to force cancel some as well. The miku with the tyres is 42k plus now, so you'll struggle to get her. I know because I was pressured into selling her and now I have so many regrets.

My last huge preorder was an Azur Lane figure (Prinz Eugen) and it was also the last figure I purchased before the pandemic started. I can relate how it's a struggle nowadays to have this kind of hobby. I love collecting figures, mangas, video games, but during those dark days, I just made the toughest decision of just choosing 1 of them to commit. Hopefully when I can get back up financially, I can continue with the others. Even if I need to just take it slowly at a time.

When passing a native figure to someone eles how do you have them pay? I want to pass one of mine to someone eles but the person interested wanted to pay through paypal goods&services but i wanted him to do ethier zelle or friends and family since its not even a sale and i dont want to add to the taxes i have to pay at the end of the year with the new tax law. Also the paypal fees. It just does not make sense to do goods&services to me. How did you go about it?
