There is nothing not to like. I’ve said it before: one of the joys of this community is the willingness for everyone to not only showcase successes but to accept, I won’t call them failures, maybe mistakes and to post them. Keep keeping up the good work, Ken 🌞

More maker channels need to do this. I appreciate the honesty and taking us through failures. Maybe explain why the piece warped and an how to prevent it. I like learning with content creators as the progress in their craft. Thanks for the content.

Ken, the colors were spectacular. I can't wait to see what happens to this down the road when you take it back off the shelf of shame.

I think you could cut it into strips and use it to make a segmented ring. I’ve had good luck with resin decorative rings within my wooden bowls. Always love your videos. Keep them up please.

howdy, absolutely love ya work all the way down here in New Zealand, you said about sanding it down? so why not put a layer of clear on the back so the metals sandwiched and then flatten it. keep up the great work mate

definitely not a failure, i would call it material for future projects!!

I think using brass chips with a teal or blue resin would look great. Maybe even a mixture of brass and aluminum chips with a green resin too. Maybe on a river board? Another great video. LOVE the shirt! 👍🏼👍🏼

Cool look. You might be able to cut it down to squares and make coasters. It might be easier to level if smaller.

thank you for not turning this lol Peter Brown and i think it was Carl Jacobs did a collab using resin and metal shavings it was dubbed the murder bowl for good reason! and maybe you could add another layer of resin to the bottom of the board so you have material you can plane off to get it level again
@kimberleelybarger209610 ай бұрын
Yes. The very first thing I saw was the "murder bowl".

I liked the bottom better. Not sure what you could have done different. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
@BeastOfSoda10 ай бұрын
Eh. Can't win them all. Since you asked, I would probably lean into the warp and make a Japanese torii sculpture out of it, since they have the horizontal piece cupped anyway. Whatever you end up doing with it, I'm always looking forward to the end result.

Thoughts. Not red, it competes with the intensity of the silver. Probably clear, maybe black? Is there any way you can build a frame for it? You’d have to figure in the slants and bowings and carve that out to fit? Some nice wood? Can resin be treated like vinyl records? Remember in the old days sometimes you could put books, etc, on them to fix a mild warp. Just another f.g.o under your belt 😊

Interesting idea and project. Curious that it warped like that. I wonder if heating the mold before pouring would have helped with that by making the mold more attractive to the epoxy. Also, did you have any issues with nicks from the metal going through your planer?
@qapla10 ай бұрын
Hey Ken, interesting video. Great effort even if the results were not what you expected. Can you flip that thing over and pour some clear on the other side - then cut that into strips and then segments as an accent ring in a segmented bowl?

Ken when I was a kid and dinosaurs roamed the Earth mom had an aluminum Christmas tree with a rotating light that shined on the tree changing the colors. This could be an idea for a Christmas video if you could cast a blank of metal shavings and turn a tree with a light in the base changing colors. I'm just the idea man, I don't make it happen. It's your baby now ! lol

I think the resin color was fine. Not sure why it warped unless there was a heat issue when the additional layers of resin were curing. Cut it into strips and make a segmented bowl!
@MoonpieCreations8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the insight. I never thought about the heat from additional pours.
@bradholland607410 ай бұрын
As a fellow maker I say there is no such thing as mistakes and fails they are simply learning experiences. Maybe try a different deep pour epoxy? I assume it warped from the heat when it cured?
@daviddesalme201410 ай бұрын
Use clear epoxy to level and square it up. Add clear to metal/epoxy side first. I liked the dark burgundy and silver. Some times the bottom turns out better than the top... guess it was meant to be.

I seldom learn anything from my successes, but I almost always learn something from my failures. Even if all I learn is, "So that's why they don't do it that way," I think it's legit. I think the board is still salvageable if it's put into a mold that's a just slightly longer, wider, and deeper, flipped upside-down, the cast in clear epoxy. It's a thought, anyway...

Tell you what we would do? OK, I would sand it up, apply my finish, and attach little rubber feet to the bottom corners, with the cup of the warp facing up. And whoever I gave or sold it to would never even notice those tiny bits of warp. That belongs on the shelf of pride, not the shelf of shame! (You want to see a shelf of shame, Mr. Pie? You need to get a look at MY shelf of shame. It’d curl your toes.)

I'm no expert in, well, anything :) but I would not call this a fail. Charcuterie boards aren't starship components or brain surgery equipment, they do not have to be perfectly flat and straight at molecular level... I understand you would like it to be perfect, but if you round the edges and level it with feet, it will be more than good enough.
@martharoberts853310 ай бұрын
I would not call it a failure. I would just call this Step 1. I'm sure you will think of something creatively to use it for and then it will be amazing.
@tompuskar442610 ай бұрын
What were rhe metal shaving from--aluminum I hope. Otherwise they must have wrecked havoc on the planer blades. Why not add small legs on the bottom which can be turned to make it sit level. If the top is fairly flat could still work. Not every fail is a true fail! LOL
